Cozumel Artists Affected by the Pandemic: Galo Ramirez
In March of 2020, the world as we know it changed. As with many occupations, the results were economically devastating for artists. I am asking the artists of Cozumel to write a little something about how they have dealt with the crisis and to share some photos of their new work. Their stories will be shared with everyone, one at a time, over the next couple months. If you have been contemplating purchasing someone’s art, now would be a great time to do so.

THE ROLE OF THE ARTIST / PANDEMIC AND ART, by Galo Ramírez
The exercise of creation comes -and can only come- from an act of the artist’s generosity to others with whom he wishes and with whom he needs to share his vital and transcendental experience in the world. I sincerely believe that those of us who love art, passionately love life; so much so that we wish to embellish our own through the experience of others, which, in the case of an artist is placed in his works. Art may not make one’s life longer. I cannot claim that. But it can certainly make it wider, deeper and present. And I repeat, that also requires courage just like any other adventure we may embark on.
The artist does not choose to be one. He has the internal need to be one. It is beyond his will. Being an artist is a matter of blessed destiny or curse, or a combination of both. In this process he surrounds himself with works. Some good and some bad; but those who uselessly attempt this qualification are the expectations. It is always good that both exist to recreate this very delicious interaction ambiance where reflection, criticism, the literary, the proposal and evolution abound. This event is what we call culture and culture is not static, as many would thing and others wish, but it is always in constant movement. We know well that societies that did not encourage art enough where the Barbarian. Spirituality over matter humanizes.
But what is an artist? It is the one who creates images beyond what can be named; it is the one who explores boundaries of languages and structures of words, of bodies, movements, colors, sounds, spaces, forms, technology, history; reflecting his own time. Creating great visions; point out the qualities and defects of the society in which he travels. It is the one who develops discourses which become plastic proposals, regardless of his political standpoint (if he has one). He is the one that renounces perverted forms of markets, marking in creation a continued renovation and not a repetition of styles [ ]. Being an artist is a stance, a categorical condition in the individual. In a certain way, an apostolate that will be affected by the diversity of daily elements and of the way the system operates, leading him to choose among several possible options: be an official, or an alternative, or a marginal or a totally commercial artist.
In this small “ocean city” we are the first artistic studio with an engraving workshop lead by my partner, visual arts teacher Niurka Guzmán. EL PAPEL DEL ARTISTA /PANDEMIA Y ARTE por Galo Ramirez
El ejercicio de la creación viene –y sólo puede venir– de un acto de generosidad del artista hacia los otros, con quienes desea y necesita compartir su experiencia vital y transcendental en el mundo. Creo sinceramente que los que amamos el arte amamos apasionadamente la vida, tanto que queremos enriquecer la propia a través de la experiencia de otros, depositada, en el caso del artista, en sus obras. Puede que el arte no haga la propia vida más larga –yo no puedo afirmarlo–, pero desde luego puede hacerla más ancha, más profunda y más presente. Y, repito, eso también requiere valor, como el de cualquier aventura en la que nos embarquemos.
El artista no escoge el serlo, tiene la necesidad interior de serlo, está más allá de su voluntad; El ser artista es una cuestión de destino bendito o maldición o una combinación de ambas, en este proceso se rodea de obras unas buenas y otras malas, pero quienes atentan inútilmente esta calificación son los espectadores. Es siempre bueno que existan los dos para recrear esta atmosfera tan deliciosa de interacción, donde abunde la reflexión, la crítica, lo literario la propuesta y la evolución, a este evento es lo que llamamos cultura y la cultura no es estática, como muchos se piensan y otros desean, sino que siempre está en constante movimiento. Sabemos bien que aquellas sociedades que no incentivaron el arte lo suficiente fueron las Bárbaras, la espiritualidad sobre la materia humaniza.
¿Pero que es un artista? Es el que crea imágenes que están más allá de lo nombrable; es el que explora las fronteras de los lenguajes y estructuras de las palabras, cuerpos movimientos, colores, sonidos, espacios, formas, tecnología, historia; Reflejando su propio tiempo; Creando grandes visiones, señalando las cualidades y los defectos de la sociedad en que se mueve; Es el que desarrolla discursos que convierte en propuestas plásticas; Independientemente de su postura política (si es que la tiene) es el que renuncia a las formas pervertidas de mercados, marcando en su hacer una postura de renovación continua y no de repetición de estilos[ ] el ser un artista es una postura, una condición categórica en el individuo; de cierta manera un apostolado, que se verá afectado por la diversidad de elementos de la cotidianidad y de la manera de operar del sistema, llevándolo a elegir entre varias opciones posibles: ser artista oficial, alternativo, marginal o totalmente comercial.

In the spring of 1998, Greg had a successful glassblowing related business in Seattle Washington, the city that is known as the glass art center in the United States. In March, on the first night of his much needed vacation in Cozumel, he met Liliana Macotela. This encounter changed everything.
By the end of that year, he had sold his business, packed up his engraving machine, and moved here to the island. He opened his working studio/gallery, called Galeria Azul, in the downstairs of his home. He is still there to this day engraving and painting, and in general, enjoying his life here with his wife, Liliana.
