8 Months Without Cruise Ships. 

It is a real tragedy what the cruise industry is going through globally. The impact on the Mexican Caribbean is brutal, with destinations like Cozumel, whose economy depends heavily on cruise ship passengers, without a single cruise ship arrival in the last eight months. 

If the COVID-19 outbreak had never happened, the Cruise Lines International Association, the industry group that represents most of the largest cruise companies, including Carnival, Royal Caribbean and MSC  predicted the arrival of  32 million people this year.  Recently, the same Association announced, that its members would not sail from U.S. ports during 2020.

Cozumel municipal officials are working toward a  two – fold success  – they’re awaiting and preparing for cruisers to return to the island, but they’re also seeking to promote a sustainable tourism that isn’t ship dependent.  Local island tour operators, restaurants and hotels are working together to attract visitors to the island.  Attracting major airlines, both national and international to the island is key.  Increased access, such as extended ferry schedules,  is paramount to securing on-island tourism.  

What you can do to help

Plan a trip to Cozumel.  Visit your favorite locations. Check in with your island friends.  December and January are fabulous times to visit the island.  The weather is mild, and since the island hasn’t had a significant number of visitors, divers are reporting the reefs are pristine.

Support Cozumel Community Kitchens through a Donation to the Cozumel Foundation.  This is the organization feeding the most people throughout the island from 10 different fully functional kitchens set up in the most vulnerable areas.  They prepare thousands of meals every day. Two separate organizations, Fundación Cozumel and the Cozumel Club Rotario have been working together to provide the kitchens with food, cleaning materials and safety equipment.

They have also recruited local business to help in their efforts. An oversight committee made up of both the FC and Cozumel Rotary distribute the funds to purchase goods with full transparency and assure that 100% of all donations go directly to all of the kitchens and distributed based on their needs.

Es una verdadera tragedia lo que pasa en la industria de buques turísticos en todo el mundo. El impacto en el Caribe Mexicano es brutal, ya que destinos tales como Cozumel, cuya economía depende en gran medida de los pasajeros de dichos buques, no han tenido un solo arribo durante los últimos ocho meses.

Se el brote del COVID-19 nunca hubiera ocurrido, la Asociación Internacional de Líneas Navieras, esto es, el grupo que representa a la mayoría de las empresas navieras más grandes como son Carnival, Royal Caribbean y MSC pronosticado la llegada de 32 millones de personas para este año. Hace poco tiempo la misma Asociación anunció que sus miembros no zarparán de puertos estadounidenses durante el 2020.

Autoridades municipales de Cozumel están trabajando para lograr un éxito doble: esperan y se preparan para el regreso de los barcos, y a la vez buscan promover un turismo sustentable que no dependa de los buques turísticos. Los operadores turísticos de la Isla, los restaurantes y los hoteles trabaja en conjunto para atraer a los visitantes a la Isla. La clave es atraer a las aerolíneas principales hacia la Isla. El mayor acceso, tal como la ampliación de horarios de los cruces de los ferries, es primordial para garantizar la llegada de turismo hacia la Isla.

Lo que puede hacer para ayudar

Haga planes para viajar a Cozumel. Visite sus lugares favoritos.  Visite a sus amigos de la Isla. Diciembre y enero es una época fabulosa para visitar la Isla. El clima es templado, y como la Isla no ha tenido un número importante de visitantes, los buzos reportan que los arrecifes están impecables .

Apoye a los comedores comunitarios de Cozumel a través de un donativo a la Fundación Cozumel. Esta es la organización que ofrece alimentos al mayor número de personas en la Isla desde 10 cocinas totalmente funcionales ubicadas en las zonas más vulnerables.  Preparan miles de comidas diariamente. La Fundación Cozumel y Club Rotario de Cozumel han trabajado conjuntamente para suministrar a las cocinas con alimentos, materiales de limpieza y equipos de seguridad.

También han recurrido a empresas locales para obtener apoyo en sus esfuerzos. Un comité de supervisión formado por la Fundación Cozumel y el Club Rotario de Cozumel, distribuyen los fondos para adquirir la mercancía, con total transparencia y así garantizar que 100% de todos los donativos van directamente a todas las cocinas distribuyéndose en función de sus necesidades.
