Anti-Dengue Community Education Efforts Already Underway

In preparation for the next rainy season, municipal representatives from the Department of Social Development have already begun a awareness campaign of steps island residents can take prevent the reproduction of mosquitoes and prevent the spread of the Dengue virus.  Dengue is carried by the Aedes mosquito, and with a few preventative steps, their breeding areas can be greatly diminished.  For more information on Dengue and it’s prevention, check out this page   http://www.dengue.gov.sg/

Cozumel Community Working Together: Aaron Aguilar Now Has His Prosthetic Leg

Thanks to the efforts of city and state officials, civic-minded groups and donations from the community at large, Aaron Aguilar Aryan will now be able to walk again.  Aaron, who is 16 years old, was in a motorcycle accident in September that resulted in the loss of his leg. Cozumel’s ironman team, Tri Kuzam, hosted a fundraiser and encouraged local businesses and individuals to donate to DIF in order to raise funds for a prosthetic leg for Aaron.   Recent Cozumel transplant, Greg Caldwell working together with DIF, took  measurements and molds back to the United States in December, where he, and his team of orthopedic technicians created a prosthetic leg.  Just last Friday, Aaron’s new leg was fitted, and he took his first steps.

Through his work with DIF, Greg Caldwell is committed to helping the community at large.  In fact, just a few days ago, a island visitor took back a package containing shoes and measurements for Tadeo, a 2 year old with pseudarthrosis in his tibia. Doctors on the mainland wanted to amputate his leg. With special custom made shoes, amputation can be avoided, and hopefully his pelvis and spine can grow normally.  Since orthopedic labs are hard to come by here, Greg sends the work that he can’t accomplish himself to his office in the States.  If you have experience in orthopedics, or come and go from the island often and would be willing to carry back a mold or small part please contact solodive@msn.com

Pets of the Week  » Adriana, Roshi and the lost labrador

Humane Society Pets of the Week

    » by Monica Velasco

ADRIANA & ROSHI, TWO GIRL CATS THAT NEED A GOOD HOME - Adriana and Roshi arrived separately to the shelter, both needing so much special care that we considered it might be best to put them to sleep. Our former vet took them home to give them extra care and now they are both healthy, six month old cats. It took a lot of dedication to bring them to this point and now that they are all well, they just need a loving family to love them. Take a look!

Adriana is a tortoise shell kitten who arrived when she was just a few days old, with her very worn down mother Romina and her litter of 7 kittens. Adriana –named after beautiful but funny-legged showbiz Chilean artist- was the runt and couldn’t walk. Her hind legs were like rags. Thinking she might have a neurological or spinal problem, I suggested to put her down, but the vet asked for an opportunity. The lack of mobility in the hind legs might just be due to a deficiency of vitamins and minerals. And indeed it was! After 3 weeks of vitamins, extra feeding, loving and pampering, she started walking and gaining weight. Now just look at her!

Roshi was also in bad shape due to severe keratitis in her left eye, which was completely shut. Eventually she responded very well to treatment and the eye started to be visible. Her treatment needs to be continued for months to come, but Roshi is worth it! She is a Siamese girl who reminds of a runway model with long, slim legs. Of course, Roshi also has a long, slim tail to show off. And she walks the walk too! She is a very elegant lady, except when she loses it completely and acts more like a Capuchin monkey. She jumps, climbs, runs, hides things. She also likes to pull objects out of drawers or bags with her very able hands. Roshi is also definitely a dog lover. Fearless, she touches noses with them and purrs. Well, truth is Roshi loves everyone! And she needs love back.

DOG FOUND! SEEN HIM BEFORE? -LABRADOR MIX, MALE, ABOUT 8 MONTHS OLD. IN VERY GOOD SHAPE AND NICE TEMPER, ALTHOUGH SEEMED VERY SCARED. This handsome blond boy showed up at a family’s doorstep, all smiles. He looked well cared for so obviously an owner should be looking for him. The people who found him asked around the neighborhood but nobody knew the dog, so they let him in the house. Same family will be fostering him for a couple of weeks, hoping to give him back to his family. If not claimed after two weeks, he will be put for adoption. HELP PASS THE WORD PLEASE!

The results of the 16th Annual Cozumel Humane Society Holiday Party are in!  This was a stellar year since we raised $87,296 pesos for the shelter.  Thanks to everyone who turned out, bought raffle tickets, donated prizes and just made it a very special night.  Thank you Cozumel!

Thank you for your donations to help the Humane Society’s Resident Vet -  Janice Ramirez, the shelter’s resident vet  had her apartment was broken in to and her laptop and computer her camera, and other items were stolen.  . Janice is the one who posts all of the dogs and cats on the Humane Society’s  FB page on her own time, after work and does not get paid extra to do it. When word got out, island residents and  friends generously donated over $8,000 pesos  to that Janice can get back up on-line, and get forever homes for our furry friends!  A big hug and thanks to everyone who helped out!

New Underwater Cave System Discovered in Quintana Roo: 4th Largest in the World

Czech scientists are reporting the discovery of a new underwater cave in the Yucatan Peninsula.  The 20 km cenote, is attached to Ko’ok Baal,  a large, already-known cave system.  Together they form more than 56.5 km of underground passageways.  According the  Prague Daily Monitor, the scientific study continues, since another very large cavern system, Xunan Ha, is located a mere 2 km away.  If there is a connection, that would create an underground  system more than 110 km long.  Click here to see the full article.
