Tadeo's Shoes: An Update

Over the past few months we have been REALLY busy, Greg and Kathy have worked with over 20 patients at with CRIM, Aaron is on his third prosthetic and is working hard (rock on!) Luis, who you all met at the breakfast - now has a girlfriend and a wedding may be in the works soon, and we have just been moving forward.
 
One of the reasons that you haven't heard me asking for mules so often is that Greg and Kathy have made a few trips back and forth to Chicago to bring in more tools for the lab. Locally he has purchased and refurbished a pizza oven, whose high temperatures are used for the melting of plasic to custom fit the braces and prosthetics. Slowly but surely we are trying to be self sufficient and help all of the patients locally.
 
We are still running off of the funds that were donated at last March's Fundraiser, but we are slowly depleting them. Please consider helping the cause with the purchase of a Tadeo's Shoes Polo shirt.... although this test shirt is in red, the final product is a stunning black polo. Please excuse the model, he was the only one available on our budget....

Tadeo is doing AWESOME! The lift in his shoe has allowed the bones in his little leg to grow straight! The past year has had a huge affect  - and the new lift that was put in last week was 1/4 inch thinner than the last. He is running and playing just like any 3 year old, and not tilting to one side. His prognosis is excellent and the possibility of future amputation is GREATLY reduced. By keeping his bones growing the right way, his muscles are all growing the right way and not contracting.   His complaints of back, knee and foot pain are absent despite his increased activity and growth. My perspective is that we have intervened and have offered positive results.

Tadeo’s Shoe’s is a very small grass roots organization, which helps people in need of orthopedic care, prosthesis and medical treatment, all free of charge.  The group takes it’s name from a now 3 year old boy, Tadeo, who’s lower leg bone was "buckling" and twisting. Volunteers carried molds and specially lifted shoes both to and from the States, so that Tadeo’s hips and spine would have the opportunity to grow straight   Since then, the group has gone on to help many others stand tall, walk straight and lead happier lives.  To learn more about the group, check out their facebook page.   We ask you to join us, and help us continue this work! Actualización de Los Zapatos de Tadeo

Durante los meses pasados hemos estado VERDADERAMENTE ocupados. Greg y Kathy han trabajado con más de 20 pacientes en el CRIM; Aarón va por su tercera prótesis y está trabajando duro (¡sigue adelante!). Luis, a quien  todos conocieron en el desayuno, ahora tiene novia y la boda quizá se celebre pronto, y continuamos avanzando.

Uno de los motivos por los que no me han escuchado solicitar mensajeros para traer paquetes tan a menudo, es que Greg y Kathy han realizado frecuentes viajes hacia y de regreso de Chicago trayendo consigo más herramientas para el laboratorio. A nivel local él ha adquirido y restaurado un horno de pizza, cuyas temperaturas altas se utilizan para fundir el plástico que se utiliza para hacer  aparatos ortopédicos y prótesis a la medida. Con lentitud pero con seguridad, estamos procurando ser autosuficientes y así ayudar a todos los pacientes a nivel local.

Seguimos trabajando con los fondos donados en la recaudación del mes de marzo pasado, pero lentamente los estamos reduciendo. Por favor considere ayudar a esta causa comprando una camiseta tipo polo de Los Zapatos de Tadeo…aunque esta camiseta de prueba es en color rojo, el producto final es una impresionante camiseta tipo color negro. Por favor disculpen el modelo, era el único disponible dentro de nuestro presupuesto…

¡Tadeo está evolucionando de manera SORPRENDENTE! ¡La elevación en el zapato ha permitido que los huesos de su pequeña pierna crezcan rectos! El último año ha influido enormemente, y la nueva elevación que se le colocó la semana pasada fue 1/4 de pulgadas más delgada que la anterior. Tadeo corre y juega como cualquier niño de 3 años, y no se inclina de lado. Su diagnóstico es excelente y la posibilidad de una futura amputación se ha reducido EN GRAN MEDIDA. Al mantener el crecimiento de sus huesos en la forma correcta, sus músculos a la vez están se desarrollan de manera correcta y no se contraen. Sus quejas por dolores de espalda, de rodilla y el dolor en el pie son inexistentes a pesar de que su actividad y crecimiento han aumentado. Mi perspectiva es que a través de nuestra intervención hemos logrado resultados positivos.

Los Zapatos de Tadeo es una pequeña organización comunitaria que apoya a personas que requieren cuidados ortopédicos, prótesis y tratamiento médico, todo en forma gratuita. El grupo debe su nombre a un niño, Tadeo, que ahora cuenta con 3 años de edad, cuyo hueso inferior de la pierna "pandeaba" y torcía. Los voluntarios traían desde los Estados Unidos moldes y zapatos especiales elevados, de modo que las caderas y la columna vertebral de Tadeo tuvieran la oportunidad de crecer rectos. Desde entonces, el grupo ha seguido ayudando a muchos otros para que mantengan erguidos, caminen en línea recta y lleven vidas más felices. New Immigration Laws: More Clarification

The new immigration  Laws, Regulations and Guidelines are in now in place, though not entirely as there are still several unclear issues which will be worked out slowly, and as they come to light, I’ll be updating everyone here.

Here we share are a few answers to questions that have been posed:

1. FM3S/FM2s do not need to be changed immediately, but until the time of their respective renewal
2. People who are currently under a tourist card (FMM) who wish to change their stay into any status (retiree, working, etc.) must leave the country and apply for the respective Visa at the Mexican Consulate in their Country (Art. 40 of the Law) – Please read additional note at the bottom on Visas
3. All FM3s/FM2s will be applying for Temporary Residency (Sixth Transitional Article of the Laws).
4. The “Inmigrado” status will be Permanent Residency

Visas that can be processed at Immigration:

1. Visitor’s visa without authorization to engage in non-profit generating activities, only for humanitarian causes.
2. Visitor’s visa with authorization to engage in profit generating activities due to employment offer (corporations must meet the requirements first)
3. Visitor’s visa for temporary resident based upon employment offer or to preserve family unit.
4. Visitor’s visa for permanent residency based upon employment offer under the Points System or to preserve family unit.

Visas that must be processed at a Mexican Consulate:

1. Visitor’s visa without authorization to engage in non-profit generating activities.
2. Visitor’s visa for adoption proceedings.
3. Visa for Temporary Residency
4. Visa for Temporary Residency, student
5. Visa for Permanent Residency

On an additional note, please take into consideration that there will be no more “urgent” applications/resolutions, therefore if you need to travel shortly after your application has been submitted, do make travel plans that will allow you enough time to process your application.

Also, please be reminded that any change of address, marital status, work, etc. must be notified as soon as possible to Immigration, otherwise penalties will apply (Immigration inspections will be taking place to verify the above)

Más aclaraciones sobre las nuevas Leyes de Inmigración

La nueva Ley de Migración, el Reglamento y los Lineamientos ya están vigentes, a pesar de que aún existen algunos puntos ambiguos que se resolverán lentamente, conforme se planteen los mantendré informados.  Aquí compartimos con ustedes algunas respuestas a preguntas que se han planteado:

1. Las FM3 y FM2 vigentes no necesitan cambiarse de inmediato sino hasta la fecha momento de realizar el trámite.  
2. Las personas que actualmente cuentan con una tarjeta de turista (FMM) y deseen cambiar su estancia (rentista, empleado, etc.) deben salir del país y solicitar la visa correspondiente ante el consulado mexicano en su país (Art. 40 de la Ley) – Favor de leer más acerca de las visas líneas abajo.
3. Todas las FM3 y FM2 aplicarán como Residente Temporal (Sexto Artículo Transitorio de la Ley).
4. La condición de estancia de Inmigrado será la de Residente Permanente

Visas que pueden tramitarse ante el Instituto Nacional de Migración:

1. Visa de visitante sin autorización para realizar actividades remuneradas, sólo para causas humanitarias.
2. Visa de visitante con autorización para realizar actividades remuneradas por oferta de empleo (las empresas deben primero cumplir con los requisitos). 
3. Visa de visitante como residente temporal con base en oferta de empleo para preservar la unidad familiar. 
4. Visa de visitante para residencia permanente con base en oferta de empleo de acuerdo al sistema de puntos para preservar la unidad familiar. 

Visas que deben tramitarse ante el Consulado Mexicano:

1. Visa de visitante sin autorización para realizar actividades remuneradas.
2. Visa de visitante para trámites de adopción.
3. Visa de Residente Temporal
4. Visa de Residente Temporal, estudiante
5. Visa de Residente Permanente

Como nota adicional por favor tomen en cuenta que ya no habrá solicitudes/resoluciones “urgentes”, por lo tanto si requieren viajar poco después de presentar su trámite, hagan planes de viaje que les permitan el suficiente tiempo para tramitar la solicitud. 
También, recuerden que todo cambio de domicilio, estado civil, etc. debe notificarse a las autoridades migratorias a la brevedad, de lo contrario aplican sanciones (Migración llevará a cabo inspecciones para verificar lo anterior)

Join the Trash-a-thon This Sunday, November 18th Hosted by the Trashy Little Group

¡El grupo Trashy Little está organizando un TRASH-A-TON (Maratón de Basura)!!! Así es amigos, nos reuniremos a las 9 a.m. en Mezcalitos. A las 9:10 a.m. iniciará nuestro evento Trashy NORMAL recogiendo basura, descubriendo nuestros magníficos premios y divirtiéndonos mucho. Esta porción del evento por lo regular termina a las 11:30 a.m. Para todos los BASURATLETAS SERIOS, los invitamos a que se pongan sus trajes de baño, lleven bolsas de playa y disfruten la tarde nadando, cenando, deteniéndose aquí y allá en lo que nos abrimos camino hacia el sur, a lo largo del hermoso extremo oriente de Cozumel, recogiendo la basura, picando algo de comer, refrescándonos en las olas, relajándonos y levantando más basura a medida que avanzamos. Cozumel Turtle Season 2012 Update

The turtle season is coming to an end, out of the 5263 nests registered this year we have only 200 nests more to release, so get time is running out if you wish to join us. Officially, our release season ends on November 15 but we are proud to say that due to the large number of nests, we’ll be releasing  until the end of November. So hurry before all the babies go away!!!Find us in the Turtle Station in San Martin Beach look for a White and Green Trailer and the turtle flag. We got info, baby turtles in exhibition and a place to get official T-Shirts and other souvenirs.

Turtle Trivia: How long does it take for baby turtles to hatch? Approximately 55 to 57 days if the temperature conditions are ok, as well as the humidity, type of sand and how deep they are, but in cold months (like this one) the time is increased to 70 days!!!

Cozumel’s turtle program is sponsored by the Cozumel Dept of Ecology, which is headed by Biol. Rafael  Chacon  T-Shirts and information available at the Department of Ecology Av. 65 and 11 street. Staff will be in the office from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm Weekdays. Temporada de la Tortuga 2012 en Cozumel: Actualización

La temporada de tortugas está llegando a su fin. De 5.263 nidos registrados este año sólo tenemos nos quedan 200 nidos más para liberar, por lo que el tiempo se acaba si es que desea unirse a nosotros. Oficialmente, la temporada de liberación termina el 15 de noviembre, pero con orgullo decimos que debido a la gran cantidad de nidos estaremos liberándolos hasta finales del mes de noviembre. ¡Así que dense prisa antes de que vayan todas las crías!! Encuéntrennos en la estación de las tortugas en playa San Martín; busquen un remolque colores blanco y verde con la bandera de la tortuga. Tenemos información, tortuguitas en exhibición y un lugar para adquirir camisetas oficiales  y otros recuerdos.

Trivia Tortuga: ¿Cuánto tiempo tardan en  eclosionar a las tortugas bebés? Aproximadamente 55 a 57 días, si las condiciones de temperatura son aceptables así como la humedad, el tipo de arena y lo profundidad en la que se encuentren; pero en los meses fríos (como éste), ¡el tiempo se incrementa hasta 70 días!

El programa de la tortuga en Cozumel es patrocinado por la Dirección de Ecología que se encuentra a cargo del Biólogo Rafael Chacón. Las camisetas e información están disponibles en la Dirección de Ecología en Ave. 65 con Calle 11. Durante el transcurso de la semana el personal laborará de las 10:00 a.m. a las 12:00 p.m. Así que si desean obtener más información sobre las actividades relacionadas con las tortugas, donar o comprar una camiseta oficial, Rafael, Ricardo y el resto del personal estará ahí para atenderle. Humane Society Pets of the Week

Over this last week much of the Cozumel Humane Society staff attended the Mega Sterilization Campaign, sponsored by CANDi (Cats and Dogs International)/ Isla Animals and Planned Pet Hood. 1574 cats and dogs sterilized over a 5 day period. There are always some very sad cases rescued from the streets during these campaigns in Cancun. One of them is Pixar, known to some of the volunteers at the clinic as Cinny. She is a Sharpei, that was rescued by some concerned citizens after she was obviously hit by a car. They meant well by putting a bandage on her injured paw, but it was way too tight and cut off blood flow. She also has a nasty fracture to this same paw. All rescues stepped up to take a few dogs in, such as Playa Animal Rescue, Tierra De Animales, Isla Animals, Coco's cat rescue for a few kittens. Cozumel Humane Society due to our support of having employed vets decided we would take Pixar and help heal her and find her a great new home. She is a very, very loving dog and attaches to anybody who shows her the least amount of attention. Now that she is settled in at the HS, our vets feel there is hope the leg can be saved, she will need a lot of wound care and TLC and if anybody would like to sponsor Pixar through her recovery, email us at pets@humanecozumel.org   Also if anybody would be willing to foster Pixar as she heals please contact us.

Buttercup Boo Kitty is a sweet little male orange tabby  that was left abandoned in one of our kitty volunteer’s driveway. Rescued and brought to one of our best kitten recovery foster homes Joni Mitchell has hand raised this little guy , now ready for a home. Joni has been battling cancer this year, continuing to accept the wee little fosters that need extra care . She says it is the best medicine to help foster the little ones and asks for your support and help to find a loving home for Buttercup so she can open her heart for more. ADOPTION FEE ALREADY DONATED FOR BUTTERCUP! Vax, shots, neutering, health certificate, all included with adoption

Las Mascotas de la Semana de la Sociedad Humanitaria

Durante esta última semana, gran parte del personal de la Sociedad Humanitaria de Cozumel acudió a la Campaña de Esterilización Mega, patrocinada por CANDI (Cats and Dogs International), Isla Animals y Planned Pet Hood, donde se esterilizaron 1574 gatos y perros durante un periodo de 5 días. Siempre hay casos muy tristes de animales rescatados de las calles durante estas campañas realizadas en Cancún. Uno de ellos es Pixar, conocida por algunos voluntarios de la clínica como Cinny; es una Sharpei rescatada por ciudadanos preocupados después de que fue obviamente golpeada por un automóvil. De manera bien intencionada le colocaron una venda en la pata herida, pero estaba demasiado apretada y restringía el flujo de sangre. También tiene una desagradable fractura en esta misma pata. Todos los rescatistas se unieron para llevarse algunos perros, entre estos Playa Animal Rescue, Tierra de Animales, Isla Animals   y el Coco’s Cat para rescatar unos cuantos gatitos. En virtud de nuestro apoyo con veterinarios, en la Sociedad Humanitaria de Cozumel decidimos recibir a Pixar y ayudarle a sanar así como encontrarle un espléndido nuevo hogar. Es una perra sumamente cariñosa y se pega a todo aquel que le de la menor muestra atención. Ahora que ya se encuentra instalada en la Sociedad Humanitaria, nuestros veterinarios consideran que hay esperanzas de que su pata se salve; necesitará mucha atención tierna y cariñosa, y si alguien desea patrocinar la recuperación de Pixar, envíennos un correo a pets@humanecozumel.org De igual forma, si alguien está dispuesto a acoger a Pixar mientras se recupera, pónganse en contacto con nosotros.

El gatito Buttercup Boo es un dulce macho, de color naranja atigrado que fue abandonado en la entrada de la cochera de uno de nuestros voluntarios en el cuidado de gatitos. Una vez rescatado fue trasladado a uno de nuestros mejores hogares para recuperación, el de Joni Mitchell quien se ha encargado de sacar adelante a este pequeño individuo, el cual ya está listo para un hogar. Joni ha estado luchando contra el cáncer este año, y  no deja de brindar cuidados necesarios a quienes necesitan cuidados adicionales. Ella dice que es la mejor medicina para ayudar a criar a los pequeños, y solicita su apoyo y ayuda para encontrar un hogar lleno de amor para Buttercup, y así Joni  podrá continuar abriendo su corazón a más gatitos. ¡LA CUOTA DE ADOPCIÓN PARA BUTTERCUP YA HA SIDO DONADA! Vacunas, inyecciones, castración, certificado de salud, todo incluido con la adopción.

A New Book on Mayan Medicinal Plants

Pronatura, along with other public and academic institutions, has published a new book on the medicinal plants that have been used by the Maya since ancient times. The book summarizes and illustrates the botany and ethnobotany of more than 100 plants. The book also documents the plants’ photochemical and pharmacological properties. As part of this project, it was discovered that, of the 2,500 vascular plants estimated to grow on the Yucatan Peninsula, approximately 30% have registered medicinal uses. There are approximately 1,000 registered healers in the State of Yucatan today, but their numbers are declining. The name of the book is Flora Medicinal de los Mayas Peninsulares. It is currently being promoted by CICY, Pronatura and the National Council for Science and Technology. The book can be purchased at Pronatura Península de Yucatán, located at Calle 32 # 269 x 47 y 47-A Col. Pinzón II in Merida. Their telephone is 999-988-4436 and they are open from 9 AM to 6 PM, Monday through Friday. The book costs $350 pesos.

Un libro nuevo sobre las plantas mayas medicinales

Pronatura junto con otras instituciones públicas y académicas, ha publicado un libro nuevo sobre las plantas medicinales que han sido utilizadas por los mayas desde tiempos remotos. El libro resume e ilustra la botánica y etnobotánica de más de 100 plantas. También documenta las propiedades fotoquímicas y farmacológicas de las plantas. Como parte de este proyecto se descubrió que de 2,500 especies distintas de plantas que se estima se desarrollan en la península de Yucatán, aproximadamente 30% de estas han registrado usos medicinales. Hoy en día, existen casi 1,000 sanadores registrados en el Estado de Yucatán, pero el número va en descenso. El nombre del libro es Flora Medicinal de los Mayas Peninsulares. En noviembre inician los "descuentos a los madrugadores" en el pago del predial en Cozumel  - El gobierno municipal ofrece “descuentos a los madrugadores” en escala descendente. Si pagan durante el mes de noviembre recibirán 25% de descuento. Si paga entre el 1º y el 23 de diciembre obtendrán 20% de descuento; 15% si paga entre el 24 y 31 de diciembre, y para los que paguen entre el 1º y 28 de enero, recibirán 10% de descuento. El restaurante Chi reanuda los días domingo el buffet asiático todo lo que pueda comer,  en su local ubicado en el centro de la ciudad.
