2014 Cozumel Turtle Season Update

This year’s turtle nesting season is now in full swing.  Both Green turtles  (chelonian mydas) and Loggerhead turtles (careta careta)  are nesting in Cozumel coasts.   In fact, we’ve located and tagged 464 nests.

This is the busiest time of the season since our first 15 nests have already hatched and been released, yet the turtles are still nesting on the beach.  We’ll be releasing more turtle nests in the following days.  This is a very active season and we’re in need of a lot of volunteers.

The Department of Ecology, which is located on Av. 65 in the Cenote Park, just south of Moby Dick, will be running a Sunday night patrolling group.  Please come by and register to help out!

Additionally the following groups are still going out every night searching for and tagging turtle nests.
