Although the 4th of July is an American holiday and not traditionally celebrated here in Cozumel, municipal officials have graciously offered to commemorate the event for island visitors and the many ex-patriot Americans who call Cozumel home.
On the evening of Thursday July 4th, from 5 – 11 pm, at Punta Langosta Shopping Center, the Department of Tourism will host the celebration. Many locally owned restaurants such as Rock N Java, Kinta, Kondesa, La Cocay, Blue Angel Restaurant, and of course Carlos n Charlies will be offering special dishes. There will be live music from the Carlos n Charlies house band – the Divine Band, as well as a DJ for dancing. For the kids, there will be facepainters, clowns, and a variety of contests! Both the Chrysalis Foundation, which helps island children with school supplies, as well as the Humane Society of Cozumel Island will be on hand as well.
Punta Langosta has graciously stepped up and offered their property, when it became apparent that the celebrations, which have traditionally been held in the downtown zocalo, would compete with the upcoming municipal elections. There is plenty of free parking in their adjoined lot in the back.
If you’d like to help sponsor the event, donate a raffle prize, help out or even host a booth, please contact Lic. Martha Minet de Luna, who is in charge of special events under the Department of Tourism, via email at martha_liz@hotmail.com

An ex-Connecticut Yankee who has called Cozumel home for over 18 years, Laura ran away to the Caribbean years ago, bumped around the islands teaching SCUBA diving, lost some time in Jamaica, and finally stopped in Cozumel for a 2 week vacation that hasn’t ended yet. With a degree in Journalism from a fancy private college she convinced her parents to pay for, Laura writes, edits, and creates the weeklyCozumel 4 You news, social media, and promotional articles about the island, as well as moderates the Cozumel 4 You Facebook group, which currently has over 25,000 members. Her long suffering husband, Fabian, has long since resigned himself to having zero private life, as he’s been involved in her various schemes and plots since his arrival. Proud parents to a variety of rescue dogs and cats, Laura continues to be the bane of her traditional Mexican mother-in-law’s existence, as she muses her way through life in the Mexican Caribbean.
