The Playa Azul Invitational tournament was started in 2007 under the pretext as a birthday celebration for Fernando Beristain, by Fernando and two or three of his golf buddies. The first event had 30 golfers. Over the years, the tournament has grown to include 80 players, including close to 25 Women, each of the last two years. Since there were also 14 Local Golfers that participated this year, the tournament has now been upgraded to an International event. Several couples participate in the tournament and most of the golfers make a vacation of the event, staying on average 5 nights and playing golf almost every day, not only on tournament days.
Many of these folks also visit Cozumel during different times of the year, not just for the tournament. These folks rent cars, eat at local restaurants, buy tours and, of course, play lots of golf! With the exception of our Local Golfers, everyone stays at Playa Azul hotel for the week. Local businesses donate some of the tournament prizes while the rest come from the entry fee that every player pays. The event has become a yearly gathering of golf buddies and friends of Cozumel and it is expected to continue to grow and improve every year. An ex-Connecticut Yankee who has called Cozumel home for over 18 years, Laura ran away to the Caribbean years ago, bumped around the islands teaching SCUBA diving, lost some time in Jamaica, and finally stopped in Cozumel for a 2 week vacation that hasn’t ended yet. With a degree in Journalism from a fancy private college she convinced her parents to pay for, Laura writes, edits, and creates the weeklyCozumel 4 You news, social media, and promotional articles about the island, as well as moderates the Cozumel 4 You Facebook group, which currently has over 25,000 members. Her long suffering husband, Fabian, has long since resigned himself to having zero private life, as he’s been involved in her various schemes and plots since his arrival. Proud parents to a variety of rescue dogs and cats, Laura continues to be the bane of her traditional Mexican mother-in-law’s existence, as she muses her way through life in the Mexican Caribbean.
