Cozumel Artists Affected by the Pandemic: Saul Jaime

In March of 2020, the world as we know it changed. As with many occupations, the results were economically devastating for artists. I am asking the artists of Cozumel to write a little something about how they have dealt with the crisis and to share some photos of their new work. Their stories will be shared with everyone, one at a time, over the next couple months. If you have been contemplating purchasing someone’s art, now would be a great time to do so.

The pandemic has devastatingly affected all economies in the world, and Cozumel is no exception since tourism is its main economic source. Undoubtedly, art is one of the segments that has been affected the most as it is at the very end of human’s basic needs.
As an instructor my projects have been affected, because as I am linked to the state and federal governments teaching Mayan communities, everything is on “stand by”; so, I stopped receiving this important income until further notice. The national exhibitions sponsored by Fondo Nacional de las Artes (Fonart), where I used to participate, were also totally suspended, and one income less for me. These circumstances have forced me to create new sales and production strategies.
On the other hand, I have been blessed with commissioned sculptures that have been sent abroad, allowing me to linger in good spirits despite the lockdown. Therefore, I am infinitely grateful to the people who have been like my guardian angels in these very adverse times; and with all my heart I wish that God blesses you and gives you much more. Meanwhile, as a new strategy I am displaying high-quality pieces in places that have the potential to sell.
My wife has joined my team and is in charge of the organization (I admit being messy), as well as of the translation and communication with my clients abroad (she teaches English). She is also designing utilitarian pieces in wood, because due to the pandemic’s collateral effects she had to resign from the private school where she worked. They were no longer paying her and wanted her to continue teaching. Utterly preposterous!
This has forced us to create new strategies and evolve in order to tackle these difficult times. But one thing we are certain of is that no matter what happens, we will always come through!
And I thank God for allowing me to live in such a blessed Island; where its people are noble and never give up even in the direst situations.

About the artist: Saul Jaime
I am Saúl Jaime Martínez, originally from the state of Nuevo Leon. I am the seventh of 10 siblings and consider myself a ’61 classic, well cared for and working – ha ha-. What I want to say is that I was born on August 14, 1961. Married 30 years to Sylvia Araceli from Cozumel. I am an Industrial Psychology undergraduate from Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo Leon, and during my time as a student worked for the Cuauhtémoc Moctezuma group (currently Heineken Corp.). I was not convinced of pursuing a career as an executive, so I decided to quit and travel before choosing what was next for me.
I arrived to Isla Mujeres in 1987; got a job as a snorkel guide taking groups to the Isla Contoy reserve. In 1988, we were struck by super-hurricane Gilbert and I was left without work. I believe that everything was already meant to be, because during that gap and time I found my true calling. During post-hurricane reconstruction, master cabinetmakers from Honduras came over to make carved doors. Without thinking it twice I asked them to let me work as assistant. That’s how I learned the basic principles of relief and sculpture.
In order to learn new techniques, I have traveled to different places such as the islands of Hawaii. This allowed opening my mind to new sculpture concepts.
Thanks to Professor Rosalinda Hinch, I founded the sculpture workshop at the Museum of Cozumel Island; and, thanks to Professor Jorge Navarro, the sculpture workshop for the blind and visually impaired.
Currently I am part of a national register of instructors and trainers sponsored by Fonart. On behalf of the government of the State of Quintana Roo, through the Ministry of Economic Development, I am an instructor for artisans in Mayan communities.
I have earned prizes and awards, but the highest award I have ever received were the words of one of my blind students who excelled at a state level and was the recipient of support to continue his production project. He said: “Professor Saúl, you have made it possible for me to see with my hands what I am unable to see with my eyes”. I have to confess I shed a tear. And although I tried to be as discreet as possible so he would not notice, he was able to sense it and ended up saying: “Do not be embarrassed to cry, your balls won’t fall off”, and then I just couldn’t stop laughing.
I have a purpose in life and that is to leave a legacy sharing the knowledge that others have shared with me so that others in the future will also share it with those who really need that knowledge.

El mundo tal y como lo conocemos cambio en Marzo 2020. Al igual que sucedió con muchas otras labores, los resultados
fueron económicamente devastadores para los artistas. Pedí a los artistas que escribieran algo sobre cómo han enfrentado la crisis, y que compartieran algunas de las fotografías de sus nuevas obras. Durante los próximos dos meses, compartirán sus historias con ustedes, una a la vez. Si está considerando adquirir alguna pieza de arte de algún artista, ahora es el mejor momento para hacerlo

La pandemia ha afectado en forma devastadora a todas las economías del mundo y Cozumel no podía ser la excepción, pues el turismo es su principal fuente económica. Sin duda, el arte es uno de los segmentos más afectados, pues se encuentra al final de las necesidades básicas humanas.
Yo he sido afectado en mis proyectos como instructor, pues al tener vínculos con los gobiernos estatal y federal para impartir clases presenciales en las comunidades de la zona maya, de momento todo quedo en “stand by”, así que dejé de recibir ese importante ingreso hasta nuevo aviso; también exposiciones nacionales auspiciadas por el Fondo Nacional de la Artes (Fonart), en las que participaba, fueron suspendidas totalmente, y para mí es un ingreso menos. Estas circunstancias me han forzado a crear nuevas estrategias tanto de ventas como de producción.
Y por otra parte he estado bendecido todo este tiempo con encargos de esculturas para enviar al extranjero, lo cual me ha permitido permanecer con buen estado de ánimo a pesar del encierro. Por ello agradezco infinitamente a estas personas que han sido para mí como ángeles guardianes en estos momentos tan adversos y deseo de todo corazón que dios les bendiga y les dé mucho más; mientras tanto como nueva estrategia estoy colocando en exposición piezas de gran calidad en lugares con potencial de venta.
Ahora mi esposa se ha integrado a mi equipo encargándose de la organización (reconozco que soy desordenado) y de la traducción y comunicación con mis clientes en el extranjero (es maestra de inglés); ella también está diseñando nuevas piezas utilitarias en madera, pues debido a los efectos colaterales de la pandemia, renunció al colegio particular donde laboraba, pues ya no le pagaban y querían que continuara impartiendo clases, ¡totalmente absurdo!
Así nos hemos sido obligados a crear nuevas estrategias y evolucionar para enfrentar este momento tan difícil, pero de algo sí estamos seguros, y es que pase lo que pase, ¡siempre saldremos adelante!
Y doy gracias a Dios por permitirme vivir en una isla tan bendecida, donde su gente es noble y jamás se doblega aún en las situaciones más adversas.

Sobre el Artista: Saul Jaime
Soy Saúl Jaime Martínez, originario del estado de Nuevo León. Soy el séptimo de 10 hermanos, me considero un clásico del 61 bien cuidado y funcionando – jaja-, quiero decir, nací el 14 de agosto de 1961. Casado con la cozumeleñas Sylvia Aracely desde hace 30 años, hice estudios de psicología industrial en la universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León y durante mi etapa de estudiante laboré en el grupo Cuauhtémoc Moctezuma (ahora Heineken Corp.)No estuve convencido de hacer una carrera como ejecutivo y decido renunciar y viajar antes de decidir qué continuaba para mí.
En 1987 llego a Isla Mujeres, consigo empleo como guía de snorquel llevando grupos a la reserva Isla Contoy. En 1988 nos impacta el súper huracán Gilberto y me quedo sin empleo. Creo que ya todo estaba destinado, pues fue en ese espacio y ese tiempo que encuentro mi verdadera vocación. En la reconstrucción del huracán llegaron de Honduras maestros ebanistas a hacer unas puertas talladas, y no lo pensé dos veces, les pedí trabajo como ayudante, y empecé a adquirir los principios básicos del relieve y la escultura.
He viajado a diferentes lugares tales como las islas de Hawái con el propósito de aprender nuevas técnicas, lo que me ha permitido abrir mi mente a nuevos conceptos de la escultura.
Fui fundador del taller de escultura en madera en el Museo de la Isla de Cozumel, gracias a la maestra Rosalinda Hinich; también del taller de escultura para invidentes y débiles visuales, gracias al profesor Jorge Navarro.
Actualmente formo parte de un padrón de instructores y capacitadores a nivel nacional auspiciado por Fonart, y soy instructor de artesanos para las comunidades de la zona maya por parte del gobierno del estado de Quintana Roo, a través de la Secretaría de Desarrollo Económico.
He obtenido premios y galardones, pero el máximo galardón que recibí fueron las palabras de uno de mis discípulos invidentes, quien logró sobresalir a nivel estatal y recibir apoyos para continuar con su proyecto productivo. Él me dijo: “Maestro Saúl, usted ha hecho que yo pueda ver con mis manos lo que no puedo ver con mis ojos”, y confieso que derramé una lagrima y aunque traté de ser lo más discreto posible para que no se diera cuenta, lo pudo percibir y terminó diciendo: “no le dé pena llorar, maestro, no se le van a caer los huevos”, y entonces no paré de reír.
Tengo un propósito en la vida, y es dejar un legado compartiendo los conocimientos que otros han compartido conmigo, para que otros en un futuro también compartan con aquellos que realmente lo necesitan.
In the spring of 1998, Greg had a successful glassblowing related business in Seattle Washington, the city that is known as the glass art center in the United States. In March, on the first night of his much needed vacation in Cozumel, he met Liliana Macotela. This encounter changed everything.
By the end of that year, he had sold his business, packed up his engraving machine, and moved here to the island. He opened his working studio/gallery, called Galeria Azul, in the downstairs of his home. He is still there to this day engraving and painting, and in general, enjoying his life here with his wife, Liliana.
