Cozumel Residents Rescue Wildlife

 

Cozumel Residents Rescued 150 Different forms of Wildlife in 2024  According to Biologists

 

Thanks to the participation of an active and concerned Cozumel community biologists from the Center for Conservation and Environmental Education are reporting that 150 different types of wildlife was rescued and released in 2024.

 

Biologist Rafael Chacon reported that of the 150 rescued specimens, 65 were birds affected by collisions with windows or being run over, while 43 were mammals such as opossums, raccoons and bats. In addition, 41 reports of reptiles, including iguanas and crocodiles found in urban areas or on roads were attended to. Biologist Chacon went on to state the importance of citizen collaboration in reporting cases of wildlife in distress and acknowledged the efforts of Dr. Julio Cesar Gutierrez and his veterinary team who provide specialized care to the rescued animals.

 

The Center for Conservation and Environmental Education is under the direction of the Foundation of Parks and Museums in Cozumel (FPMC)  with Juanita Alonso Marrufo, acting as their general director.  She also stated that citizen awareness and the adoption of sustainable practices is crucial to preserve Cozumel’s wildlife and natural resources.

 

De acuerdo con biólogos, en 2024 habitantes de Cozumel rescataron a 150 especies diferentes de fauna silvestre

Gracias a la participación de una activa y comprometida comunidad cozumeleña, los biólogos del Centro de Conservación y Educación Ambiental informaron que en 2024 se rescataron y liberaron 150 diferentes tipos de fauna silvestre.

 

El biólogo Rafael Chacón informó que de los 150 ejemplares rescatados, 65 fueron aves afectadas por choques con ventanas o atropellamientos, en tanto que 43 fueron mamíferos como zarigüeyas, mapaches y murciélagos. Además, se atendieron 41 reportes de reptiles entre iguanas y cocodrilos encontrados en zonas urbanas o carreteras. También se protegió al cangrejo azul durante su migración para evitar que fuera atropellado en la carretera norte.

 

El biólogo Chacón señaló la importancia de la colaboración ciudadana para reportar casos de fauna silvestre en peligro y reconoció los esfuerzos que el doctor Julio César Gutiérrez y su equipo veterinario brindan con atención especializada para animales rescatados.

 

El Centro de Conservación y Educación Ambiental se encuentra bajo la dirección de la Fundación de Parques y Museos de Cozumel (FPMC) con Juanita Alonso Marrufo como directora general quien manifestó que la sensibilización ciudadana y la adopción de prácticas sostenibles son cruciales para preservar la fauna y los recursos naturales de Cozumel.
