Text & Translation by Moises JH  & Tono Lopez

With the objective of preserving and revitalizing the Mayan language, which has been losing speakers in the Yucatan Peninsula due to factors such as migration, globalization and the lack of educational resources for indigenous languages, free classes will begin on February 4th aimed at the general population, with special emphasis on children and young people interested in learning this native language.

The courses will be taught at the “Gonzalo de Jesús Rosado Iturralde” Municipal Public Library, located on 30th Avenue between 8th Street North and 10th Street North, from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. Saturnino Magaña Valle, deputy director of Education for the municipality of Cozumel, highlighted the importance of rescuing the Mayan language as a fundamental part of the culture and identity of the Yucatecan people. “Maya has predominated in our region for many years, but little by little it has been lost. What we seek is to rescue our culture and our identity as a peninsular people,” he said.

Magaña Valle explained that the groups will be formed according to the number of people registered and will be divided by age. In case there are interested adults, more flexible schedules are planned to be offered in the afternoons. “Our doors are open. The important thing is that they come to register in order to be able to carry out these courses completely free of charge,” he said.

Registration for the course is already open and can be done directly at the library. Those interested only need to show up to register and obtain their credential. With these initiatives, the aim is not only to preserve the Mayan language, but also to strengthen access to education and culture in the Yucatecan community.
