Bee Friendly Cozumel: Protecting Bees and Educating the Community.

Bee Friendly Cozumel is a fascinating project that not only rescues and protects bees, but also educates the community about their ecological importance. If you visit Cozumel or live on the island, this is an experience you should definitely consider.

A Project with History and Purpose

The initiative comes from the family of Martha Chávez, who started more than 10 years ago without prior knowledge of beekeeping. Their initial interest was to create an organic crop at home, experimenting with hydroponics, vermiculture and other natural techniques. However, when they noticed that their plants in the greenhouse were not producing fruit, they understood the importance of pollination.

This is how Bee Friendly Cozumel was born, a family project dedicated to the rescue, relocation and protection of bees, as well as raising awareness about their role in the ecosystem. Its mission is to promote the production of organic honey and derivatives within a circular economy model. Mrs. Martha, her husband, her children and even her daughter-in-law participate in it.

Bee Rescue and Relocation in Cozumel.

Bees play a fundamental role in the pollination of crops, but many times their hives are destroyed due to ignorance or fear. Bee Friendly Cozumel works closely with Civil Protection and volunteers to rescue colonies of Apis mellifera and melipona bees (stingless and of great value in Mayan culture).

Using specialized techniques, they ensure the safety of both the rescuers and the bees, moving them to a suitable environment where they can thrive.

In addition, melipona bees, which are endemic to the region, have significant cultural importance in Mayan tradition. Their honey, in addition to being highly valued for its healing properties, has been used in rituals and medicinal practices since ancient times.

The decline in bee populations due to the use of pesticides, climate change and the destruction of their habitat is a latent threat. Initiatives such as Bee Friendly Cozumel contribute to reversing this trend by protecting, educating and promoting sustainable practices.

One of the most enriching aspects of Bee Friendly Cozumel is its educational tour, in which visitors can get up close and personal with bees and their importance in the ecosystem. Throughout the visit, guides explain various aspects of nature, Mayan culture and honey production.

The tour begins with an introductory talk about the role of bees in ecological balance, their function as pollinators and the threats they face. Different types of bees are presented, including meliponas, stingless bees that have been cultivated by the Mayans for centuries. On the tour you learn several interesting facts that you probably didn’t know about bees and their relationship with the Mayans.

In one segment of the tour, visitors learn about the vanilla plant and its interesting pollination process. Vanilla is native to Mesoamerica and, in the wild, can only be pollinated by a specific species of bee that is not found in most commercial crops.

One of the favorite parts of the tour is the explanation about honey collection and production. Visitors can see the honeycombs of different bee species up close and learn how honey is extracted without harming the bees.

Additionally, tastings of different types of honey are offered, including local flowering honey and honey with turmeric, known for its digestive and anti-inflammatory properties. The uses of propolis and beeswax in natural products such as balms and soaps are also explained.

As part of the tour, visitors have the opportunity to participate in the making of chocolate following a traditional Mayan method.

Not only is this process interactive and fun, but it also allows participants to learn about the history of cacao in Mesoamerican culture and its relationship to beekeeping.

Another highlight of the tour is the opportunity to make beeswax candles. Visitors can mold and decorate their own candles while learning about the benefits of natural wax and its positive environmental impact compared to synthetic products.

Although Bee Friendly Cozumel is not dedicated to tourism as its main activity, they do offer these educational tours and interactive experiences. The resources obtained through the visits are reinvested in the purchase of equipment to rescue more bees and improve their facilities. Lina Riviera is in charge of giving some of the tours and has found in Bee Friendly an opportunity to raise awareness and share her knowledge with visitors:

“Resources are used as a team to continue with the rescue of the bees. The technical boxes, for example, have to be made of special wood since the bees do not accept any type of wood. These are boxes that have to be made to order and their cost is considerable. The collection of resources is used to make new boxes and when we are called to do a rescue, we must already have these tools to be able to save them.”

This allows the project to continue growing and continue fulfilling its mission of protecting bees and educating the community about their importance.

Bee Friendly Cozumel applies sustainability principles through:

– Training in beekeeping and honey production for the community.

Bee Friendly Cozumel es un proyecto fascinante que no solo rescata y protege a las abejas, sino que también educa a la comunidad sobre su importancia ecológica. Si visitas Cozumel o vives en la isla, esta es una experiencia que definitivamente deberías considerar.

Un Proyecto con Historia y Propósito

La iniciativa surge de la familia de Martha Chávez, quienes comenzaron hace más de 10 años sin conocimientos previos sobre apicultura. Su interés inicial era crear un cultivo orgánico en casa, experimentando con hidroponía, lombricultura y otras técnicas naturales. Sin embargo, al notar que sus plantas en el invernadero no producían frutos, comprendieron la importancia de la polinización.

Así nació Bee Friendly Cozumel, un proyecto familiar dedicado al rescate, reubicación y protección de abejas, así como a la concientización sobre su papel en el ecosistema. Su misión es promover la producción de miel orgánica y derivados dentro de un modelo de economía circular.  En el participan la señora Marthar, su esposo, sus hijos e incluso su nuera.

Rescate y Reubicación de Abejas en Cozumel.

Las abejas juegan un papel fundamental en la polinización de cultivos, pero muchas veces sus colmenas son destruidas por desconocimiento o temor. Bee Friendly Cozumel trabaja en estrecha colaboración con Protección Civil y voluntarios para rescatar colonias de abejas Apis mellifera y meliponas (sin aguijón y de gran valor en la cultura maya).

Utilizando técnicas especializadas, aseguran la seguridad tanto de los rescatistas como de las abejas, trasladándolas a un entorno adecuado donde puedan prosperar.

Además, las abejas meliponas, que son endémicas de la región, tienen una importancia cultural significativa en la tradición maya. Su miel, además de ser altamente valorada por sus propiedades curativas, ha sido utilizada en rituales y prácticas medicinales desde tiempos ancestrales.

La disminución de las poblaciones de abejas debido al uso de pesticidas, el cambio climático y la destrucción de su hábitat es una amenaza latente. Iniciativas como Bee Friendly Cozumel contribuyen a revertir esta tendencia mediante la protección, educación y fomento de prácticas sostenibles.

Uno de los aspectos más enriquecedores de Bee Friendly Cozumel es su recorrido educativo, en el que los visitantes pueden conocer de cerca a las abejas y su importancia en el ecosistema. A lo largo de la visita, los guías explican diversos aspectos de la naturaleza, la cultura maya y la producción de miel.

El recorrido comienza con una charla introductoria sobre el papel de las abejas en el equilibrio ecológico, su función como polinizadoras y las amenazas que enfrentan. Se presentan diferentes tipos de abejas, incluyendo las meliponas, abejas sin aguijón que han sido cultivadas por los mayas durante siglos. En el reccorido aprendes varias curiosidades que seguramente no sabias sobre las abejas y su relacion con los mayas.

En un segmento del recorrido, los visitantes aprenden sobre la planta de vainilla y su interesante proceso de polinización. La vainilla es originaria de Mesoamérica y, en la naturaleza, solo puede ser polinizada por una especie específica de abeja que no se encuentra en la mayoría de los cultivos comerciales.

Una de las partes favoritas del recorrido es la explicación sobre la recolección y producción de miel. Los visitantes pueden ver los panales de diferentes especies de abeja de cerca y aprender cómo se extrae la miel sin dañar a las abejas.

Además, se ofrecen degustaciones de diferentes tipos de miel, incluyendo miel de floración local y miel con cúrcuma, conocida por sus propiedades digestivas y antiinflamatorias. También se explican los usos del propóleo y la cera de abeja en productos naturales como bálsamos y jabones.

Como parte del recorrido, los visitantes tienen la oportunidad de participar en la elaboración de chocolate siguiendo un método tradicional maya.

Este proceso no solo es interactivo y divertido, sino que también permite a los participantes conocer la historia del cacao en la cultura mesoamericana y su relación con la apicultura.

Otro punto destacado del recorrido es la oportunidad de hacer velas de cera de abeja. Los visitantes pueden moldear y decorar sus propias velas mientras aprenden sobre los beneficios de la cera natural y su impacto ambiental positivo en comparación con productos sintéticos.

Aunque Bee Friendly Cozumel no se dedica al turismo como su actividad principal, ofrecen estos recorridos educativos y experiencias interactivas. Los recursos obtenidos a través de las visitas se reinvierten en la compra de equipamiento para rescatar más abejas y mejorar sus instalaciones.  Lina Riviera es la encargada de dar algunos de los tours y ha encontrado en Bee Friendly una oportunidad de poder concientizar y compartir su conocimiento con los visitantes:

“los recursos son utilizados en equipo para continuar con el rescate de las abejas. Las cajas técnicas por ejemplo, Tienen que ser de maderas particulares puesto que las abejas no aceptan cualquier tipo de madera. Son cajas que se tienen que mandar a hacer y su costo es considerable. La captación de recurso sirve para hacer nuevas cajas y cuando se nos hace un llamado para hacer un rescate, nosotros debemos de contar ya con estas herramientas para poder salvarlas.”

Esto permite que el proyecto continúe creciendo y siga cumpliendo con su misión de proteger a las abejas y educar a la comunidad sobre su importancia.

– Reinversión de ganancias en educación y conservación.

– Capacitación en apicultura y producción de miel para la comunidad.
