Michelle de los Santos, in charge of credentialing at the Cozumel Parks and Museums Foundation, granted an interview to Cozumel4You, where she provided detailed information about this benefit that many island residents can take advantage of.

The Foundation Parks and Museums membership card is an identification that grants free access to some of Cozumel’s most iconic parks and museums, such as Chankanaab, Punta Sur, the San Gervasio archaeological zone, and the Island Museum. This benefit is designed to allow Cozumel residents to enjoy these natural and cultural spaces without paying an entrance fee, representing significant savings and an opportunity to connect with the island’s natural and historical richness.

Although the card is well-known among the local community, there is still a considerable number of residents who do not have it and, therefore, are not taking advantage of this benefit. If you are an island resident and meet the requirements, the process is simple and accessible.

Requirements to Obtain the Card.

To obtain the card, you must present documents proving your residency in Cozumel. You can use your valid residency card, whether temporary or permanent, as long as it is active. A driver’s license issued on the island of Cozumel is also valid. Additionally, you will need to provide a copy of a current proof of address, such as a recent electricity bill (CFE) or water bill (CAPA), no older than three months.

It is important to note that the residency must specify that it was issued in Cozumel. This can be verified on the back of the residency card. If your residency was issued in another city, such as Playa del Carmen or anywhere else in Mexico, it will not be valid for this process. However, as mentioned earlier, a Cozumel driver’s license is accepted, making the process easier for those who have this document.

Where and How to Apply.

The process is carried out at the Foundation of Parks and Museums offices, located at 30th Avenue and Juárez, just a few steps from the gas station on that corner. The office hours are from 8:30 in the morning to 3:30 in the afternoon, Monday through Friday. The cost of the process is 100 pesos (approximately $5 USD) per adult. For children aged 4 to 12, the cost is 50 pesos (around $2.50 USD), and children under 4 can obtain the card for free. The card is valid for two years, after which it must be renewed.

Benefits of the Card.

The card grants free access to the parks and museums managed by the Foundation, which include:

1.Chankanaab Park: A stunning eco-archaeological park offering activities such as snorkeling, swimming with dolphins, and a botanical garden.

2. Punta Sur Park: A protected natural area featuring pristine beaches, a lighthouse, and a lagoon where you can spot crocodiles and birds.

However, it is important to mention that, in the case of the San Gervasio archaeological zone, while the Foundation does not charge an entrance fee, the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) does apply an additional fee that must be paid upon entry. This detail is important to keep in mind to avoid confusion.

The parks and museums mentioned above are open from 9:00 in the morning to 4:00 in the afternoon, Monday through Saturday. It is advisable to plan your visit in advance, especially if you wish to participate in specific activities or guided tours.

La credencial de la Fundación de Parques y Museos es una identificación que permite el acceso gratuito a algunos de los parques y museos más emblemáticos de Cozumel, como Chankanaab, Punta Sur, la zona arqueológica de San Gervasio y el Museo de la Isla. Este beneficio está diseñado para que los residentes de Cozumel puedan disfrutar de estos espacios naturales y culturales sin tener que pagar la entrada, lo que representa un ahorro significativo y una oportunidad para conectarse con la riqueza natural e histórica de la isla.

El horario de atención es de 8:30 de la mañana a 3:30 de la tarde, de lunes a viernes. El costo del trámite es de 100 pesos (aproximadamente 5 dólares) por persona para adultos. Para menores de 4 a 12 años, el costo es de 50 pesos (alrededor de 2.5 dólares), y los menores de 4 años pueden obtener la credencial sin costo alguno. La credencial tiene una vigencia de dos años, después de los cuales es necesario renovarla.
