Cozumel Sustainable Wave Energy

In Cozumel, the bet is on tidal energy to promote energy sustainability.

Cozumel, Quintana Roo. – During the third edition of the Caribbean Electric and Solar Expo 2025, held recently, the potential of Quintana Roo to implement clean energies, particularly tidal energy, was highlighted as an alternative to cover the growing electricity demand in the region. Currently, the state does not have the necessary infrastructure to generate electricity autonomously, but projects of this type could change this panorama.

One of these projects is the development of a tidal energy generation system in Cozumel, Uribe Ingenieros Asociados S.A. de C.V. in collaboration with the Institute of Electrical Research. This project consists of the installation of an underwater device equipped with four turbines, similar to wind turbines, which take advantage of marine currents to produce electricity.

Raúl Uribe García, CEO of Uribe Ingenieros Asociados, explained that the turbines will be installed at a depth of 82 meters to avoid affecting marine fauna, such as dolphins and sharks, which usually swim at an average depth of 20 to 25 meters. Cozumel and the Riviera Maya were identified as ideal locations for this type of technology due to the constant speed of their sea currents, a characteristic that is only found in a few places in the world.

The project, which was originally planned to be put into operation in October 2024, has faced delays due to the tests necessary to ensure its correct operation. However, it is expected to be operational no later than September of this year. Once up and running, this technology is expected to not only supply the region’s energy demand, but also promote sustainability and reduce dependence on polluting energy sources.

Uribe García stressed the importance of involving new generations in the development and use of clean technologies. “Young people are the future and should be interested in these innovations,” he said. He also highlighted that the project has the support of Plan Mexico, which will allow this technology to be scaled up to benefit more communities in the future.

The implementation of clean energy in Quintana Roo, particularly in tourist destinations such as Cozumel, represents a significant step towards sustainability. Although its implementation worldwide is still in development, countries such as South Korea, France, Russia and Canada already have plants in operation, while other nations, such as China and India, are carrying out tests and experiments.

With this project, Cozumel seeks to position itself in the use of renewable energy in Mexico, demonstrating that it is possible to combine tourism development with environmental protection.

Cozumel, Quintana Roo. – Durante la tercera edición de la Expo Eléctrica y Solar del Caribe 2025, celebrada recientemente, se destacó el potencial de Quintana Roo para implementar energías limpias, en particular la energía mareomotriz, como una alternativa para cubrir la creciente demanda eléctrica en la región. Actualmente, el estado no cuenta con la infraestructura necesaria para generar electricidad de manera autónoma, pero proyectos de este tipo podrían cambiar este panorama.

Uno de esos proyectos es el desarrollo de un sistema de generación de energía mareomotriz en Cozumel, Uribe Ingenieros Asociados S.A. de C.V. en colaboración con el Instituto de Investigaciones Eléctricas. Este proyecto consiste en la instalación de un dispositivo submarino equipado con cuatro turbinas, similares a los aerogeneradores eólicos, que aprovechan las corrientes marinas para producir electricidad.

Raúl Uribe García, CEO de Uribe Ingenieros Asociados, explicó que las turbinas se instalarán a 82 metros de profundidad para evitar afectar a la fauna marina, como delfines y tiburones, que suelen nadar a una profundidad promedio de 20 a 25 metros. Cozumel y la Riviera Maya fueron identificados como lugares ideales para este tipo de tecnología debido a la velocidad constante de sus corrientes marinas, una característica que solo se encuentra en pocos lugares del mundo.

El proyecto, que originalmente se planeaba poner en operación en octubre del año 2024, ha enfrentado retrasos debido a las pruebas necesarias para garantizar su correcto funcionamiento. Sin embargo, se espera que entre en operación a más tardar en septiembre de este año. Una vez en marcha, se prevé que esta tecnología no solo abastezca la demanda energética de la región, sino que también promueva la sostenibilidad y reduzca la dependencia de fuentes de energía contaminantes.

Uribe García destacó la importancia de involucrar a las nuevas generaciones en el desarrollo y aprovechamiento de tecnologías limpias. “Los jóvenes son el futuro y deben interesarse en estas innovaciones”, afirmó. Además, resaltó que el proyecto cuenta con el apoyo del Plan México, lo que permitirá escalar esta tecnología para beneficiar a más comunidades en el futuro.

La implementación de energías limpias en Quintana Roo, particularmente en destinos turísticos como Cozumel, representa un paso significativo hacia la sostenibilidad. Aunque su implementación a nivel mundial sigue en desarrollo, países como Corea del Sur, Francia, Rusia y Canadá ya cuentan con plantas en operación, mientras que otras naciones, como China e India, realizan pruebas y experimentos.

Con este proyecto, Cozumel busca posicionarse en el uso de energías renovables en México, demostrando que es posible combinar el desarrollo turístico con la protección del medio ambiente.
