CFE Underwater Cable Set for March:  More Power for Cozumel

José Luis Chacón, President of Cozumel, recently reported that the CFE ( The Federal Electricity Commission)  is set up to begin in March.

The submarine project involves the installation of new underwater  cables to Cozumel  from the Playa del Carmen mainland and  will quadruple Cozumel’s electric supply.

The  installation of the submarine cable will expand the energy capacity from 40,000 to 120,000 KVA,.  The power increase will ensure a stable and sufficient supply to meet the island’s growing electricity demand, avoiding blackouts and voltage fluctuations.

José Luis Chacón  made these comments  after participating in the recent International Tourism Fair in Madrid. He said there (CFE) project to increase island power generated confidence among entrepreneurs and investors, one of which was a hotel chain.

“If a company wants to come and build a 100-room hotel, it needs the approval of the CFE, and Cozumel does not currently have the capacity to accommodate a hotel load of that size, something that will be resolved with the submarine cabling,” he said.

While in Madrid, Cozumel’s Mayor  met with executives of the Barceló group who expressed interest in investing in Cozumel to expand their hotel conglomerate. He said the company is interested in building a new hotel on the south side of the island where they already have a plot of land. “Having a new hotel in Cozumel would be extremely attractive, but much of it depends on the infrastructure,” said the mayor.

He also said that federal investment will be of great importance as well:  through Conagua for the San Miguelito sanitation plant –   an important issue that will help offer better services on the island. In December, Governor Mara Lezama announced approximately 100 million pesos will be invested in upgrades for the San Miguelito treatment plant.

En fechas recientes el alcalde de Cozumel, José Luis Chacón, informó que la CFE (Comisión Federal de Electricidad) iniciará los trabajos en

marzo.

El proyecto consiste en instalar nuevos cables submarinos hacia Cozumel desde la zona continental de Playa del Carmen y con ello cuadruplicar el suministro eléctrico a Cozumel.

La instalación del cable submarino ampliará la capacidad energética de 40,000 a 120,000 KVA. El incremento de la capacidad garantizará un suministro estable y suficiente para atender la creciente demanda de electricidad de la Isla, evitando apagones y fluctuaciones en la tensión.

José Luis Chacón pronuncio estas palabras después de participar en la Feria Internacional de Turismo de Madrid que se realizó en fechas recientes. Mencionó que el proyecto de la CFE para aumentar la electrificación en la Isla generó confianza entre los empresarios e inversionistas, uno de los cuales fue una cadena hotelera.

“Si una empresa quiere venir y construir un hotel de 100 habitaciones, requiere la aprobación de la CFE y actualmente Cozumel no tiene la capacidad para albergar una carga hotelera de ese tamaño; algo que se resolverá con el cableado submarino”, dijo.

Durante su estancia en Madrid, el presidente municipal de Cozumel se reunió con directivos del grupo Barceló quienes expresaron su interés en invertir en Cozumel para ampliar su conglomerado hotelero. Dijo que la empresa está interesada en construir un nuevo hotel en la zona sur de la Isla donde ya cuentan con un terreno. “Tener un hotel nuevo en Cozumel sería muy atractivo, pero mucho depende de la infraestructura”, indicó el alcalde.

Asimismo, señaló que la inversión federal también será de gran importancia: a través de Conagua para la planta de saneamiento San Miguelito; un aspecto importante que ayudará a ofrecer mejores servicios en la Isla. En diciembre la gobernadora Mara Lezama anunció que se invertirán casi 100 millones de pesos en mejoras para la planta de tratamiento San Miguelito.
