Cozumel Lifeguards Rescue Rip Current

Cozumel’s Lifeguards Rescue Swimmer from Strong Rip Current Area

 

Cozumel’s Lifeguards once again show their heroism when they rescued a swimmer swept out to sea. The rescue took place last Monday afternoon off Playa San Martin on the eastern side of the island.

Playa San Martin is known to have very storing Rip Currents, and the area is clearly marked with large multi-lingual signage..

Last Monday around  3:30 p.m. lifeguards Rubén Estrada and César Poot were in the San Martín 1 watchtower. From there, they saw a man being dragged out to sea by the rip current, approximately 70 meters away. Both lifeguards proceeded to carry out the rescue of the young man, who, according to lifeguards, had already been verbally warned about the strong current.

The unidentified swimmer was returned to shore from where the lifeguards returned to their watchtower. According to Civil Protection Cozumel, part of a lifeguard’s duty is to inform beachgoers of the dangers of strong currents and for swimmers to follow the safety recommendations issued by the lifeguards.

 

Los guardavidas de Cozumel rescatan a nadador en una zona de fuerte resaca

Los guardavidas de Cozumel demuestran, una vez más, su heroísmo al rescatar a un nadador que era arrastrado mar adentro. El rescate tuvo lugar el pasado lunes por la tarde en Playa San Martín en el extremo oriental de la Isla.

 

Playa San Martín es conocida por tener corrientes muay fuertes y la zona está claramente marcada con señalética multilingüe y de gran tamaño.

 

El lunes pasado, alrededor de las 15:30 horas, los guardavidas Rubén Estrada y César Poot se encontraban en la torre de vigilancia 1 en San Martín. Desde ahí vieron a un hombre que era arrastrado por la resaca, a unos 70 metros de distancia. Ambos socorristas procedieron a realizar el rescate del joven quien, según los socorristas, y había sido advertido verbalmente acerca de la fuerte corriente.

 

El nadador no identificado fue devuelto a la orilla y los guardavidas regresaron a su torre de vigilancia. De acuerdo con Protección Civil de Cozumel parte del deber de un guardavidas es informar a los bañistas de los peligros de las fuertes corrientes y que éstos sigan las recomendaciones de seguridad emitidas por los guardavidas.
