The campaign for Cozumel’s new Presidente is officially underway.  Although the elections aren’t until July, candidates have already been attending public events, beach clean-ups and visiting Cozumel neighborhoods.  Several national parties, as well as smaller, and even local political groups, are represented in this year’s race.

Some of the candidates include:  Fredy Marrufo Martin,  (PRI – Partido Revolucionario Institucional)  Roberto Olan Carrera (PAN – Partido Acción Nacional) Ramón Escalante Cervera (PRD – Partido de la Revolución Democrática), Eliot Reyes Novelo (PVEM – Partido Verde Ecologista de México), and Cesar Trejo Vázquez (MC – Movimiento Ciudadano).

Elections traditionally take place on the first Sunday in July, which in this case is July 6th.  The Presidente’s term is 3 years, with no re-election permitted.
