Chile’s Esmeralda (BE-43), a steel-hulled four-masted barquentine tall ship, arrived in Cozumel’s harbor this week. Considered to be the second tallest and longest sailing ship in the world, the crew of the Esmeralda has graciously opened their vessel, which is used as a training and educational facility, to public tours. This is the second time, the “White Lady,” as she is also known, has called into Cozumel’s port. In an official ceremony, Cozumel’s President, Fredy Marrufo, formally received the Chilean Ambassador to Mexico, in addition, to several high ranking naval officials.
This is the 6th Chilean boat to carry the name ”Esmeralda,” the first having been captured from the Spanish in 1820. This Esmeralda (BE-43), was formally launched in 1953. She has a sister ship, Juan Sebastián Elcano, also a training vessel in the Spanish navy.
