Last Sunday marked one of Cozumel’s most important sporting events, the Ford Ironman Cozumel 2013.  In spite of inclement weather several days prior, over  2,500 competitors and their fans arrived from all over the world to participate in the event, and cheer on the athletes.  The Cozumel Ironman is considered to be the second most popular in the Ironman events, bested only by the original Kona, Hawaii destination.  The Cozumel event started at   6:40 am at Chankanaab Park with a modified 1.9 mile swim, followed by a 112 mile bicycle circuit that laps the island, and finally a 26.2 marathon ending in Parque Andres Quintana Roo.  This is the 5th year Cozumel island has proudly hosted the event.

Due to strong north winds, port closures and varying conditions in the days preceding the competition, the event was held with a modified, or shortened, swim course of 1.93 miles.  Additionally, due to favorable currents, a majority of competitors reported significantly faster swim times.

The Ironman Cozumel is considered the beginning of Cozumel’s high season, and local merchants and restaurants are reporting high levels of activity, while hotel occupancy rates were around 93% over the weekend.
