Last weekend, shortly after the road was repaved, a 3 foot deep sinkhole appeared in Avenida Xel Ha, between Avenues 45 and 50, just south of the Municipal Sports facility.  The sinkhole is believed to be part of Cozumel’s underground cave, or cenote system, with the collapse brought about by the heavy machinery used to resurface the road.

Officials from the Department of Urban Development and the Department of Public Works have requested a study to denote areas that are at also at risk, since there are many locations that  may have been developed over island centoes.  There are currently no regulations that call for a soil density or mechanical study for new development, much less existing areas and structures.
