Although the 8th Annual Sacred Mayan Journey isn’t until the end of May, city officials are already underway with the advance planning to ensure that this year’s event is a huge success. Scheduled for May 22 – 24, municipal officials, the Foundation of Parks and Museums Cozumel (FPMC) and the Tourism Department are working together to ensure that the record-breaking 350 canoeists from Playa del Carmen, Tulum and Cozumel, who have already begun training, will have every available resource necessary.
The 3-day event recreates ancient ritual pilgrimages by the Yucatan peninsula’s original inhabitants from Xcaret to Cozumel. The celebration starts at Xcaret, where participants reenact rituals to the goddess Ix Chel, as they wait for the first rays of dawn, when they launch their wooden canoes toward Cozumel. After paddling the 12 nautical mile crossing, offerings are made to the goddess, who sends a message which is returned via the canoeists return to Playa del Carmen on the mainland.
