Greg Dietrich has kindly started a new series where he will profile two island artists a month. He’ll be starting the series with himself, and Lucio Frias.

I have been an artist in glass for 26 years now. Specifically what I do is blow glass with layers of colored glass and then engrave into the layers of color with diamond wheels to make the imagery. Being a scuba diver my whole life, most of my imagery is sea life related, such as coral reefs, fish, etc. When I moved to Cozumel in 1998, 2 things happened. First, I stopped working for other artists and dedicated 100% of my time to my own artwork. This led to many changes in my constantly evolving work. The other thing that happened is that for the first time, my imagery started matching my surroundings. With the incredible coral reefs that surround the island, my inspiration has been endless. been working on a new series of work. My new series, which I call “Dualities”, are not illuminated. These pieces are larger vases with a vibrant interior color and a layer of white glass on the outside of the vase. I then engrave into the layer of white glass to make the imagery. The pieces are larger, heavier, and more time consuming than my work in the past. I am very excited with the new work, and am anxious to see where it leads.

One last comment…For the last 10 years I have also been painting on silk. It is very different from my glass work, not as time consuming, but equally creative.

My name is Lucio Frias Correa; born in Dzilan Bravo, Yucatan, but have lived in Cozumel, Quintana Roo, Mexico all my life.
In order to understand the theme of my work as well as their colors, we need to revisit my past.
I have always been a person who likes diversifying everything that arises in my life. Always loved most of the sports and also practiced them. My first steps in painting go back to when I was 12; I then realized I had the talent to draw and paint. Did my first paintings at 20: 7 still lifes in oil. Painting was put aside for many years as for 20 I worked as windsurf instructor. The painting adventures resumed 19 years ago, with a 4-year pause teaching windsurf, returning even with more enthusiasm and ever since then I am devoted to painting and showing my works.
My wish is to paint for the rest of my life.
I paint with different techniques and styles.
I like painting landscapes, marine sceneries and anything I can come up with. I prefer watercolor, oil and acrylic.

For over 19 years I have sold a total of 2,000 works mostly bought and liked by North Americans.
Painting in this stage of my life is my passion and essential to spiritually survive. Painting is everything to me; it is something I love. Painting has made me more sensitive to many things that happen around me. I love life, I love nature and animals.
I need the shape in order to be able to paint a work of art.
My dream is to leave my legacy in this beautiful Island of Cozumel.
A cultural legacy. For the time being I will continue doing what I treasure most: paint.

Greg Dietrich amablemente comienza una nueva serie en la cual mensualmente describirá a dos artistas. La serie principia con él mismo y Lucio Frías.

Desde hace 26 años soy un artista que trabaja el vidrio; específicamente el vidrio soplado con capas de vidrio de color y luego para las imágenes, con ruedas de diamante realizo el grabado en relieves de colores. Ya que la mayor parte de mi vida he sido buzo, muchas de mis imágenes reflejan la vida marina como los arrecifes de coral, peces, etc. Cuando me mudé a Cozumel en el año 1998, sucedieron 2 coas. Primero dejé de trabajar con otros artistas y dediqué 100% de mi tiempo al arte.

Ello me condujo a realizar muchos cambios a mi obra constantemente cambiante. Lo otro que sucedió es que por primera ocasión mis imágenes comenzaron a concordar con mi entorno. Gracias a los asombrosos arrecifes de coral que rodean la Isla, mi inspiración es incesante. Comencé a ilustrar grabados produciendo luces nocturnas, lámparas colgantes y de pared. Aún elaboro lámparas regularmente; y durante el último año he estado trabajando con una nueva obra en serie. Mi nueva serie, la cual titulo “Dualidades”, no está iluminada. Estas piezas son jarrones de mayor tamaño, de colores vibrantes y una capa de vidrio blanco para las imágenes. Las piezas son más grandes, más pesadas y consumen más tiempo que otras obras que yo haya elaborado en el pasado. Estoy muy entusiasmado con la nueva obra e impaciente en ver hacia donde se dirige.

Un último comentario. Durante 10 años también he pintado seda. Esto es muy diferente de las obras en vidrio, no consume tanto tiempo y es igualmente creativo.

Mi nombre es Lucio Frias Correa, nací en Dzilan Bravo, Yucatán pero toda mi vida la he vivido en Cozumel Quintana Roo México.

Para entender las temáticas de mis obras así como el colorido que se ven en ellas habría que mirar en mi pasado.
Siempre he sido una persona que le gusta diversificar todo los que nace en su vida.
Siempre fui un deportista amante de la mayoría de los deportes así como lo practique.
Los primeros pasos que di en la pintura se remontan cuando yo tenía 12 años.
Allí me di cuenta que tenía una habilidad para dibujar y pintar.
Mis primeros cuadros fueron pintados a la edad de 20 años, 7 pinturas al óleo y fueron temas de bodegones. Por muchos años hice a un lado la pintura para dedicarme a ser instructor de windsurfing, trabajo que dedique por 20 años. Y ya hace 19 años que empecé la aventura de dedicarme a la pintura y aunque tuve una pausa de cuatro años pues volví a la enseñanza del windsurfing, regrese a pintar con más entusiasmo y desde entonces me dedico a pintar y exhibir mis obras.
Mi deseo es pintar durante todos los años que viva.

Pinto diferentes técnicas y estilos.
Me gusta pintar paisajes, paisajes marinos y todo lo que se me ocurra. La acuarela, el óleo y el acrílico son los medios que más me gustan.
Durante más de 19 años he vendido un total de 2,000 obras siendo los estadounidenses que más compran y gustan de mis obras.
El pintar para mí en esta etapa de mi vida es mi pasión y primordial para poder subsistir espiritualmente.
El pintar para mi es todo, es algo que amo.
El pintar me ha hecho más sensible a muchas cosas que pasan a mi alrededor.
Amo la vida, amo la naturaleza y amo a los animales.
Yo necesito la figura para poder pintar una obra.
Hace 2 meses empecé un nuevo proyecto que es enseñar lo que he aprendido, doy clases de pintura en un colegio en la isla.
Así como este proyecto tengo otro proyecto con el museo de la isla de Cozumel.
Mi sueño es dejar mi legado a esta mi hermosa isla de Cozumel.
Un legado cultural.
Por lo pronto seguiré haciendo lo que más adoro “pintar”.

In the spring of 1998, Greg had a successful glassblowing related business in Seattle Washington, the city that is known as the glass art center in the United States. In March, on the first night of his much needed vacation in Cozumel, he met Liliana Macotela. This encounter changed everything.
By the end of that year, he had sold his business, packed up his engraving machine, and moved here to the island. He opened his working studio/gallery, called Galeria Azul, in the downstairs of his home. He is still there to this day engraving and painting, and in general, enjoying his life here with his wife, Liliana.
