Annual Cozumel Cruz Roja Carnaval Fundraiser A Huge Success

The Cruz Roja Carnaval Group, a group of over 60 men and women volunteers, successfully completed their annual fundraiser to benefit Cozumel’s Cruz Roja Clinic on Ave. 65.  The donations collected this year and next year will be used toward the purchase of a sonogram machine for the Clinic.  In exchange for a donation of either  $3, $5 or $10 USD, each donor got to select a string of Carnival beads from a large selection  on display.   This year souvenir Carnival tee shirts were also offered by the group.  This year’s leaders of the fundraiser were Marilynn  and Dave Hrouda from Grand Rapids, Minnesota, and local resident and longtime Cruz Roja volunteer, Martha Sempere, who serves as the group’s liaison officer with the Cruz Roja Board of Directors.

Participation in The Carnival Group is open to anyone who would like to give back to the people of Cozumel who host our visits to their island.  Each volunteer is asked to commit a minimum of six hours to the project during Carnival – two three-hour shifts in the bead booth.  If you would like to be a part of this once-a-year fundraiser, please email Sandy Timmons at rickandsandytimmons@yahoo.com.   You will be notified next January of the kick-off breakfast, schedule for working, and attend the presentation luncheon when the funds are presented to Cruz Roja.   Another volunteer opportunity with Cruz Roja is to work once a week at the airport departure lounge asking for donations from departing passengers.  The Airport Group will be active between now and the end of March.  Kindly email Sandy if you would enjoy joining this group of volunteers.

An ex-Connecticut Yankee who has called Cozumel home for over 18 years, Laura ran away to the Caribbean years ago, bumped around the islands teaching SCUBA diving, lost some time in Jamaica, and finally stopped in Cozumel for a 2 week vacation that hasn’t ended yet. With a degree in Journalism from a fancy private college she convinced her parents to pay for, Laura writes, edits, and creates the weekly Cozumel 4 You news, social media, and promotional articles about the island, as well as moderates the Cozumel 4 You Facebook group, which currently has over 25,000 members. Her long suffering husband, Fabian, has long since resigned himself to having zero private life, as he’s been involved in her various schemes and plots since his arrival. Proud parents to a variety of rescue dogs and cats, Laura continues to be the bane of her traditional Mexican mother-in-law’s existence, as she muses her way through life in the Mexican Caribbean. ______________________________ Una ex yanqui de Connecticut quien llama hogar a Cozumel desde hace más de 15 años.
