Art in Cozumel: Island Artists Profiled

Two island artists highlighted: Alfonso Viladiu & Rance

This month, Greg Dietrich, owner of the Galeria Azul,  is kind enough to continue his series and highlight Alfonso Viladiu and Rance.

ALFONSO VILADIU

I was born in Merida, Yucatán; I love the Caribbean and diving that is why I decided to stay in the Island, ¡over 40 years ago! I am self-taught but have taken workshops with good artists, watercolorists, participated in many events at the Museum, galleries an urban art. Creativity is my passion; through my paintings I try to create awareness on the preservation of the environment, flora, reefs and love to the sea.

Cheers,

Alfonso

In this watercolor I want to draw attention to the Elkhorn coral, an endangered species.

Long live Mexican traditions! This watercolor and ink is part of a series intended to extol Mexican instruments and music.

I am passionate about collage techniques. Here I paid tribute to my rabbit and monarch butterfly as well as to this great 19th century sculptor from Madrid, contrasting the simplicity of a clay jug.

RANCE

born on bastille day, i came at art from about as far away as possible– a yen for aircraft design. or perhaps it wasn’t so distant after all– in retrospect, i should have known.

santa fe, early 70s, and a lovely encounter with a scented juniper cross gave me the impetus to make my first primitive attempts at carving wood– clumsy they were indeed. however, i just couldn’t seem to make myself stop.

soon enough i began to find art was intrinsic in so very many things– over the years i have added sculpture, both stone and wood. the mid-70s began jewellery design and production and the early 80s pen and ink drawings, which segued into painting with acrylics. designing and preparing food wove their ways through all of this.

if one approaches it correctly, one can find art in almost any endeavor.

RANCE

Greg first came to Cozumel in 1988 to scuba dive and enjoy the beaches of the east side of the island. He immediately fell in love with the island and its people. His dive master convinced him he should look into buying a house here… turns out his other job was as a real estate agent. Long story short, he bought a house here on that very first visit. Greg came back to Cozumel at least twice a year for the next 10 years. In the spring of 1998, Greg had a successful glassblowing related business in Seattle Washington, the city that is known as the glass art center in the United States. In March, on the first night of his much needed vacation in Cozumel, he met Liliana Macotela. This encounter changed everything. By the end of that year, he had sold his business, packed up his engraving machine, and moved here to the island. He opened his working studio/gallery, called Galeria Azul, in the downstairs of his home. He is still there to this day engraving and painting, and in general, enjoying his life here with his wife, Liliana.
