Art in Cozumel:  Lots to see at the Museum of the Island – by Greg Dietrich Galeria Azul

The Museum of the island has 3 very good exhibitions right now, and you are able to see them all for free. In the main area as you walk in, there is an exhibition of artworks by 42 local artists that were asked to create something that reflects the flora and fauna of our beautiful island. There are sculptures, paintings, and photos that represent the artist’s view. Then as you climb the stairs you will find more of this same exhibit on the 2nd level.

Once you have finished there, you can visit the 2 exhibition halls that you will find on each side of the upstairs level. Both are filled with the artwork of the very talented Shinzaburo Takeda, who is a Japanese artist who has been residing in Mexico for 58 years.

Also worth noting is that Takeda has been very generous in sharing his talents by teaching many students his techniques in Mexico.

In one hall, you will find his prints made from engravings on metal and wood. Exquisite detail that shows he is a leader in this technique. In the other hall, you will enjoy seeing his paintings on canvas, which also demonstrate his talents as an artist.

All of these exhibits are free to the public from 8am till 8pm, every day of the week. The Takeda exhibits “CORAZÓN MIGRATORIO” will run until May 16th. The collective exhibit “FLORA Y FAUNA COZUMELEÑA” will run until June 19th.

Do not miss this opportunity to enjoy these exhibits in our recently renovated Museum of the island.

Greg first came to Cozumel in 1988 to scuba dive and enjoy the beaches of the east side of the island. He immediately fell in love with the island and its people. His dive master convinced him he should look into buying a house here… turns out his other job was as a real estate agent. Long story short, he bought a house here on that very first visit. Greg came back to Cozumel at least twice a year for the next 10 years. In the spring of 1998, Greg had a successful glassblowing related business in Seattle Washington, the city that is known as the glass art center in the United States. In March, on the first night of his much needed vacation in Cozumel, he met Liliana Macotela. This encounter changed everything. By the end of that year, he had sold his business, packed up his engraving machine, and moved here to the island. He opened his working studio/gallery, called Galeria Azul, in the downstairs of his home. He is still there to this day engraving and painting, and in general, enjoying his life here with his wife, Liliana.
