Cozumel Artists Affected by Pandemic: Niurka Guzmán Otañez

In March of 2020, the world as we know it changed. As with many occupations, the results were economically devastating for artists. I am asking the artists of Cozumel to write a little something about how they have dealt with the crisis and to share some photos of their new work. Their stories will be shared with everyone, one at a time, over the next couple months. If you have been contemplating purchasing someone’s art, now would be a great time to do so.

Hope you enjoy the stories,

Greg Dietrich – Owner – Galeria Azul

I am Niurka Guzmán Otañez, a professional visual artist. I hold a master’s degree in Visual Arts from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. I arrived to Cozumel over seven years ago from the State of Morelos in Central Mexico.  At present I have a studio for artistic production with my partner, who is also an artist with a long career in the profession.

Without a doubt, the pandemic has been a great blow to our economy and our way of life.  We went from the dynamic of exhibitions, live art activities where we showed our art with the possibility of selling, we imparted workshops to the local community and to visiting tourists. The quarantine cancelled our art exhibitions and physical art dissemination.  In a sector that had already been affected by the crisis, “isolation slows down and makes sales even more difficult.  We the artists, in general, live in uncertainty. This is a profession that does not have any kind of social security; the vast majority do not have health insurance, nor a cultural structure that supports and recognizes the work of the artist as a fundamental piece for the construction of the artistic and cultural legacy of a nation. In this sense it is important to support and recognize the work of the artist by consuming original art, made with so much love, dedication and devotion.

To face the economic pressure, we prepared a virtual gallery on our Facebook page Galo Art Studio where we offer original artworks and serialized prints from $400 Mexican pesos onwards, in order to provide a financial relief and and cover the necessary expenses to keep our art space running.  For those who want to support the survival of our creative space and are not currently in Cozumel , we have the express shipping option via FEDEX, DHL or UPS.

Thanks to social media I have been able to continue with the dissemination, promotion and sale of my art, in addition to the Facebook page of the studio, I have a personal page exclusively exhibiting my art: https://www.facebook.com/niurkaguzmanotanez.  I invite you to visit both pages. You will surely find a beautiful piece of art that fits your budget. Likewise, I offer the painting by commission services. I can create your dream piece of art, landscapes, portraits, murals, different styles of contemporary art.

Quarantine has also been an opportunity for me to focus on production, to rethink and reaffirm my personal and professional goals.  These have been months of great creativity, imagination and artistic productivity.

Besides the production of my art, another activity that fascinates me is teaching.  I have been teaching drawing, painting, engraving and artistic techniques for over 20 years.  I love sharing my knowledge, learning in learning in the process by feedback from my students.  For me it is a privilege to guide, inspire, facilitate and accompany the creative process of each person who participates in my courses.  With the pandemic I adapted new ways of giving classes and workshops through different online platforms. Clearly this change has meant a greater scope of participants which would be impossible on a face-to-face basis.  In these online painting classes I have had several students participating from the United States, Colombia, Dominican Republic and different cities in Mexico. So the saying goes: every crisis is an opportunity to grow and evolve.

Greg first came to Cozumel in 1988 to scuba dive and enjoy the beaches of the east side of the island. He immediately fell in love with the island and its people. His dive master convinced him he should look into buying a house here… turns out his other job was as a real estate agent. Long story short, he bought a house here on that very first visit. Greg came back to Cozumel at least twice a year for the next 10 years. In the spring of 1998, Greg had a successful glassblowing related business in Seattle Washington, the city that is known as the glass art center in the United States. In March, on the first night of his much needed vacation in Cozumel, he met Liliana Macotela. This encounter changed everything. By the end of that year, he had sold his business, packed up his engraving machine, and moved here to the island. He opened his working studio/gallery, called Galeria Azul, in the downstairs of his home. He is still there to this day engraving and painting, and in general, enjoying his life here with his wife, Liliana.

  • Thanks for taking the inicitaive to inform about the arts in Cozumel. There is an inmense amount of art and creativity in the Island, often overlooked and underestimated. The artistic community in Cozumel is diverse and unique.
The impact of the pandemis, while threatening, has opened the doors to more creative ways of producing and promoting art. This is a great moment in time to explore our creativity and take advantage of online courses that serve as a constructive way to pass our time, calm our soul and enhance our spirit.
I have taken several onine workshops with the artist Niurka Guzman Otañez. They are affordable, fun, educational and very enlightening. Highly reccommended!
Art is a way of telling a story. Don’t miss the opportunity to tell yours!
Your support to the artists of Cozumel, be it by purchasing their work or by participating in their workshops will ensure the survival of an important part of our cultural legacy.
