Art & Culture in Cozumel: Fall Cultural Week

Greg Dietrich details this year’s 13th annual Cozumel Fall Cultural Program ….

Next week, the people of Cozumel can enjoy a week full of art, theatre, music, and more in what is known as the Fall Cultural Week (Otoño Cultural) of Cozumel. This year marks the 13th year of the festival. It all began back in 2003 when a group of 5 women were discussing the fact that there really were no organized cultural festivals here on the island, so they decided to start one.

cultualInvesting their time and energies in fundraising activities, and asking for donations by the business community of Cozumel, they brought the festival to life. They formed a group called Circulo Cultural Arcano, a non-profit organization, and have made the Fall Cultural Week an annual event ever since. Some of the people involved in the group have changed over the years, but the concept has not; bringing art, poetry, theatre, and music to the people of Cozumel, free of charge.

This year the local government, recognizing the success of past years, has decided to support the events, both financially and logistically. Also new this year is a biennial contest for artists from the entire state of Quintana Roo. Artists were invited to submit photos of their artwork to a jury, and the top 20 pieces were chosen for an exhibition which will inaugurate the weeklong festival. There were 4 categories for the artists; Painting, sculpture, graphics, and photography. This inauguration and exhibition will take place Monday, November 7th at 8pm at the Museum of the Island. During the evening, they will announce and award the winners of this first biennial contest.

Then on Tuesday, there will also be a presentation of classical music by the group Cuarteto de Cuerdas “Fundamental”. This will take place in the Benito Juarez Park starting at 8pm.

On Thursday there will be 3 hours of poetry, music and a presentation of theatrical play called “El Principito”.  in the park starting at 7pm.

On Friday the Juvenile Symphony of Cozumel will give a concert starting at 7pm in the park.

On Saturday, there will be a workshop for children and adults teaching the dance known as Jarana. This takes placeculturaislacozumel at the installations of the Direction of Culture.

Also on Saturday, 7-10pm in Benito Juarez Park, there will be the award ceremony for a mural painting contest. Ten different groups have painted murals in the Plaza del Sol, and the winner will be announced Saturday evening. Also, there will be live music by two different bands. UFO VANS play ska-raggae and NUEVA SENDA will play their fusion music. There will also be handcrafts and local organic market products for sale.

To wrap it all up, the closing festivities will be on Sunday, the 13th with a concert in Benito Juarez Park featuring two different bands. First, starting at 7pm, the reggae group Chan Santa Roots from Quintana Roo will play, followed by a group from Veracruz called Macuiles, who offer a fusion of flamenco, jazz, and funk.

Everyone is invited to join the community and enjoy this week of art, music and theatre known as Fall Cultural Week, or Otoño Cultural.

Festival that will take place all week with several events for the community to enjoy:

Greg first came to Cozumel in 1988 to scuba dive and enjoy the beaches of the east side of the island. He immediately fell in love with the island and its people. His dive master convinced him he should look into buying a house here… turns out his other job was as a real estate agent. Long story short, he bought a house here on that very first visit. Greg came back to Cozumel at least twice a year for the next 10 years. In the spring of 1998, Greg had a successful glassblowing related business in Seattle Washington, the city that is known as the glass art center in the United States. In March, on the first night of his much needed vacation in Cozumel, he met Liliana Macotela. This encounter changed everything. By the end of that year, he had sold his business, packed up his engraving machine, and moved here to the island. He opened his working studio/gallery, called Galeria Azul, in the downstairs of his home. He is still there to this day engraving and painting, and in general, enjoying his life here with his wife, Liliana.
