The catholic ceremonies of the Fiesta de San Miguel commemorate the patron saint of the island of Cozumel. The celebration begins on September 21, and generally features colorful processions that start from the church of San Miguel and go throughout the downtown area. On the last day, which in this case will be this Saturday, September 28, fishermen carry an image of San Miguel Archángel to the downtown pier and board a boat. The public accompanies the fisherman to the pier and board a ferry, surrounded by fishing boats, to join the procession, in which the patron saint blesses the boats for another year, throwing flowers into the ocean as they sail along.
