Children’s English Section in the Public Library Grand Opening This Saturday by Nancy Murray DeAnda

The Grand Opening of the Children’s English section in the municipal library has been set for this coming Saturday, April 13th, from 9am til noon.   Al the donated books have been labeled, alphabetized, and sorted into 3 general reading levels – beginner (white), intermediate (silver) and advanced (gold).

Although the grand opening is on Saturday, this is a continuing project – please keep those books coming!   Also on our wish list are bean bag chairs, Leapfrog TAG system wands and books as well as donations to repair the air conditioner…. join us – be a part of this great effort! The kids (and their parents) are getting excited for this new opportunity to learn English – it should be fun!  We are asking anyone who can, to bring a dozen cupcakes, brownies or cookies for the kiddies on Saturday to make the grand opening a huge event.   The sign-up sheet will be available for those who would like to be an English volunteer – ideally we would like volunteers on Saturdays 9am til noon, for story hour, home work assistance and basic conversation for the children who would like to practice. Pick one Saturday, or pick a few! Anyone is welcome to join in and lend a hand!

While many children are taught English at school, they do not have anyone with whom to “practice” their budding second language.    This is something that the ex-pat community as well as American visitors to the island are working to change.  A very special thank you to all the generous people who have mulled down books, volunteered their time, and helped with this ongoing community project.

An ex-Connecticut Yankee who has called Cozumel home for over 18 years, Laura ran away to the Caribbean years ago, bumped around the islands teaching SCUBA diving, lost some time in Jamaica, and finally stopped in Cozumel for a 2 week vacation that hasn’t ended yet. With a degree in Journalism from a fancy private college she convinced her parents to pay for, Laura writes, edits, and creates the weekly Cozumel 4 You news, social media, and promotional articles about the island, as well as moderates the Cozumel 4 You Facebook group, which currently has over 25,000 members. Her long suffering husband, Fabian, has long since resigned himself to having zero private life, as he’s been involved in her various schemes and plots since his arrival. Proud parents to a variety of rescue dogs and cats, Laura continues to be the bane of her traditional Mexican mother-in-law’s existence, as she muses her way through life in the Mexican Caribbean. ______________________________ Una ex yanqui de Connecticut quien llama hogar a Cozumel desde hace más de 15 años.
