How Cozumel artists have been affected by the pandemic: Pilar Bañuelos

In March of 2020, the world as we know it changed. As with many occupations, the results were economically devastating for artists. I am asking the artists of Cozumel to write a little something about how they have dealt with the crisis and to share some photos of their new work. Their stories will be shared with everyone, one at a time, over the next couple months. If you have been contemplating purchasing someone’s art, now would be a great time to do so.

What this pandemic has taught me

I am an artist and teacher originally from Mexico City. I have lived in Cozumel for 4 years. Most of that time I have taught plastic arts workshops in private schools, institutional and independently. As an artist I have shown my work through individual and group exhibits.

I was invited to take part of this project which I consider of great help at this time. I want to share what this pandemic has taught me so far in the professional aspect of my life.

The clearest and grimmest reality the lockdown has left in me is realize that I have a lot to do in order to make my work known outside schools and the artistic guild in Cozumel. The last few months, social media have been basic for me; commissions such as signs, wall decoration, online classes and the sale of works resulting from social media have been of great help; although, to be honest, these have also been limited. Therefore, any open channel that might spread and show my work, is welcome and necessary.

Another aspect I want to emphasize is the importance of engaging in artistic activities at this time. One of the tasks that I enjoy most, apart from the creation of my works, is teaching artistic techniques. In the last few weeks I have been fortunate enough to help the people who seek my services to learn some artistic technique, to be “distracted” and face some emotional problems arising from confinement. As a teacher the most fascinating thing to observe that after a short time, students realize that this goes beyond painting, drawing or just letting time pass by. In my opinion practicing a art is not just about developing skills, but harmonizing the soul, and this pandemics has confirmed that more than ever.

On the other hand, there is my own creative experience during this lockdown. With more time in my hands and concentration I was able to return to sculpture, and as I like change and experimenting, I chose paper as the material for this new series, besides being, practically, the only material I had at home. Along these works, I developed works in relief for wall decoration.

I am grateful for learning, the productive confinement, alliances with friends and colleagues. More than ever, I am betting on empathy and collaborative work.

Works and others will be on display from August 27^th to September 10^th at Galeria Azul.

You can also visit La Gloria – Botica de Sabores restaurant, where you will find works of my own. One of these works will be part of a raffle on September 24 at 6 pm, as part of the official opening of the exhibition.

El mundo tal y como lo conocemos cambio en Marzo 2020. Al igual que sucedió con muchas otras ocupaciones, los resultados fueron económicamente devastadores para los artistas. Pedí a los artistas que escribieran algo sobre cómo han enfrentado la crisis, y que compartieran algunas de las fotografías de sus nuevas obras. Durante los próximos meses, compartirán sus historias con ustedes, una a la vez. Espero las disfruten.

Lo que me ha enseñado esta pandemia

Soy artista y maestra originaria de la Ciudad de México. Tengo 4 años viviendo en Cozumel, la mayor parte de este tiempo la he dedicado a impartir talleres de artes plásticas en escuelas particulares, institucionales y de manera independiente. Como artista he difundido mi trabajo en exhibiciones individuales y participando en muestras colectivas.

Fui invitada a participar en este proyecto que considero de gran ayuda en estos momentos. Quiero compartir lo que hasta ahora me ha enseñado esta pandemia en el aspecto profesional de mi vida.

La más clara y cruda realidad que me ha dejado el encierro es darme cuenta de que tengo mucho por hacer para dar a conocer mi trabajo fuera del sector de escuelas y del gremio artístico en Cozumel. En los últimos meses las redes sociales han sido básicas para mi, encargos como rótulos, decoración en pared, clases en línea y la venta de obra que se han derivado de este medio han sido de gran ayuda, aunque honestamente han sido escasos también. De ahí que cualquier canal abierto a la difusión y muestra de mi trabajo es bienvenido y necesario.

Otro aspecto que quiero destacar, es el que tiene que ver con la importancia de practicar actividades artísticas en estos momentos. Uno de los quehaceres que mas disfruto, a parte de crear mis obras, es enseñar técnicas artísticas. En las últimas semanas he tenido la fortuna de ayudar a personas que buscan mis servicios para aprender alguna técnica artística, “distraerse” y afrontar algunos problemas emocionales derivados del encierro, como maestra lo más fascinante es observar cómo al cabo de poco tiempo los alumnos se dan cuenta que esto va más allá pintar, dibujar o pasar el rato, en mi opinión practicar arte no solo se trata de desarrollar habilidades de diversa índole, se trata de armonizar el alma y esta pandemia me lo ha ratificado más que nunca.

Por otro lado, está mi propia experiencia con la creación durante este encierro. Con más tiempo y concentración decidí retomar la escultura y como me gusta el cambio y la experimentación, elegí el papel como material para esta nueva serie, además de ser prácticamente el único material que tenía en casa. A la par de estas obras desarrollé muestras de relieve para decoración sobre pared.

Agradezco los aprendizajes, el encierro productivo, las alianzas con amigos y colegas, más que nunca apuesto por la empatia y el trabajo colaborativo.

Las obras y otras más estarán en exhibición del 27 de agosto hasta 10 de septiembre en la Galería Azul.

También puede visitar el restaurante La Gloria – Botica de Sabores. Donde actualmente se muestra obras de mi autoría, una de las cuales se rifará el 24 de septiembre a las 6pm, como parte de la inauguración oficial de la exposición.

Greg Dietrich

Greg first came to Cozumel in 1988 to scuba dive and enjoy the beaches of the east side of the island. He immediately fell in love with the island and its people. His dive master convinced him he should look into buying a house here… turns out his other job was as a real estate agent. Long story short, he bought a house here on that very first visit. Greg came back to Cozumel at least twice a year for the next 10 years.

In the spring of 1998, Greg had a successful glassblowing related business in Seattle Washington, the city that is known as the glass art center in the United States. In March, on the first night of his much needed vacation in Cozumel, he met Liliana Macotela. This encounter changed everything.

By the end of that year, he had sold his business, packed up his engraving machine, and moved here to the island. He opened his working studio/gallery, called Galeria Azul, in the downstairs of his home. He is still there to this day engraving and painting, and in general, enjoying his life here with his wife, Liliana.
