Beach Clean Up a Massive Success with CCEA

CCEA, the Center for Conservation and Environmental Education, hosted their first Beach Clean Up of the year and pulled a whopping 520 KILOS of solid waste off Punta Sur Beaches.

This massive beach clean up wasn’t done in one day, but rather over the course of several weekends, and it was completed by people of all ages, walks of life, and different abilities.

It’s important to note that this trash is not from the island, but is dragged along with the current to Punta Sur where it poses a threat to the coastal biodiversity, including turtles, who are looking for a place to nest.

The director of the CCEA, Rafael Chacón Díaz, explained that the waste collected during these days is not garbage left by visitors, since the beaches where the activity is carried out are in areas not open to the public. “These are wastes that travel long distances with the ocean current and end up on our coasts. “It is common to find articles with labels from far away countries, which shows the magnitude of the problem of pollution in the oceans,” he explained.

The coordinator of the beach cleaning program, Ricardo Peralta Muñoz, provided information on the correct selection and separation of waste, which was later transferred to the sanitary landfill for proper final disposal. As part of the analysis carried out, it was identified that several of the articles found came from other countries, mainly from the Caribbean and other continents.

Gran éxito en la limpieza de playas gracias al CCEA

El CCEA, Centro de Conservación y Educación Ambiental, organizó su primera limpieza de playas del año en las playas de Punta Sur donde se logró reunir la formidable cantidad de 520 KILOS de residuos sólidos.

Esta limpieza masiva de playas no se hizo en un solo día sino en el transcurso de varios fines de semana y fue realizada por personas de todas edades, condiciones sociales y habilidades diferentes.

Es importante señalar que esta basura no procede de la Isla, sino que es arrastrada por la corriente hasta Punta Sur donde representa una amenaza a la biodiversidad costera, incluidas las tortugas que buscan un lugar para anidar.

El director de CCEA, Rafael Chacón Díaz, explicó que los desechos reunidos durante estos días no son basura dejada por los visitantes ya que las playas donde se lleva a cabo la actividad se ubican en una zona no abierta al público. “Son desechos que viajan largas distancias con la corriente marina y terminan en nuestras costas. Con frecuencia se encuentran artículos con etiquetas de países lejanos, lo que demuestra la magnitud del problema de la contaminación en los océanos”, explicó.

El coordinador del programa de limpieza de playas, Ricardo Peralta Muñoz, brindó información sobre la selección correcta y la separación de residuos que posteriormente fueron trasladados al relleno sanitario para su adecuada disposición final. Como parte del análisis realizado, se identificó que varios artículos provenían de otros países, principalmente del Cari be y de otros continentes.
