Cozumel’s Clean Beach Crew: An Interview with Melanie Qualls

In an interview conducted by Cozumel4You with Melanie Qualls, a resident of the Island of Cozumel for almost five years, she shared her vision and efforts to keep the beaches clean through community initiatives.
Melanie explained that her Clean Beach Crew initiative group is made up of a mix of locals and visitors, although surprisingly few Mexicans
join the cause. “Of the people who participate, 70% are locals and 30% are visitors, but almost none of them are Mexican,” she commented. Most foreign participants show more willingness to help, with 60% of them saying yes when asked to help.
The group faces several challenges, including the type and amount of trash they collect. “We focus on collecting garbage instead of separating or recycling because the quality of the garbage no longer allows it to be recycled. We want to remove the garbage from the beach so that it is cleaner and more pleasant for everyone,” Melanie explained. Despite the lack of coordination with the government, Qualls remains optimistic about the possibility of optimizing the cleanup through better communication and collaboration with other groups.
Melanie and her team have managed to obtain local sponsors who cover the costs of the necessary tools and materials. “We have sponsors who provide us with emergency kits and drinks for the cleanup events,” she said. Additionally, some local businesses support the group’s activities by offering drinks and other incentives to participants.
Since its inception, the group has organized 21 cleanups and collected approximately 2,300 kilos of trash. More than 150 people have participated in these activities, and the group has the support of six sponsors and almost 400 followers on their Facebook page, where they post information about upcoming events.
Melanie expressed her desire to work more in environmental education, although she acknowledged that she is not an expert in the field. “I would love to do more education, but I’m not a biologist. I would like to collaborate with ecology groups that already have the information and contacts to teach people about the importance of keeping beaches clean,” she said.
Looking to the future, Melanie hopes to continue cleanups and encourage more community involvement. “We want people to feel responsible for keeping beaches clean. It doesn’t take much effort; just taking a bag to the beach and picking up trash is a good start,” she said. She also mentioned her interest in collaborating with lifeguards to facilitate the availability of trash bags to citizens.
Finally, Melanie called on the community and visitors to join her cause. “Picking up litter doesn’t have to be complicated. It can be a fun and rewarding activity that benefits everyone. We want more people to join us and enjoy clean beaches,” she concluded.

En una entrevista realizada por Cozumel4You a Melanie Qualls, una residente en la Isla de Cozumel desde hace casi cinco años, compartió su visión y esfuerzos para mantener las playas limpias a través de iniciativas comunitarias.
Melanie explicó que su grupo de inicitava Clean Beach Crew está compuesto por una mezcla de locales y visitantes, aunque sorprendentemente, pocos mexicanos se suman a la causa. “De las personas que participan, un 70% son locales y el 30% visitantes, pero casi ninguno de ellos son mexicanos,” comentó. La mayoría de los participantes extranjeros muestran más disposición para ayudar, con un 60% de ellos diciendo que sí cuando se les pide colaborar.
El grupo se enfrenta a varios desafíos, incluido el tipo y la cantidad de basura que recogen. “Nos enfocamos en recoger la basura en vez de separar o reciclar porque la calidad de la basura ya no permite reciclarla. Queremos sacar la basura de la playa para que sea más limpia y agradable para todos,” explicó Melanie. A pesar de la falta de coordinación con el gobierno, Qualls sigue optimista sobre la posibilidad de optimizar la limpieza a través de una mejor comunicación y colaboración con otros grupos.

Mirando hacia el futuro, Melanie espera continuar con las limpiezas y fomentar una mayor participación comunitaria. “Queremos que la gente se sienta responsable de mantener las playas limpias. No se necesita mucho esfuerzo; simplemente llevar una bolsa a la playa y recoger basura es un buen comienzo,” dijo. También mencionó su interés en colaborar con los guardavidas para facilitar la disponibilidad de bolsas de basura para los ciudadanos.
Finalmente, Melanie hizo un llamado a la comunidad y a los visitantes a unirse a su causa. “Recoger basura no tiene que ser complicado. Puede ser una actividad divertida y gratificante que beneficia a todos. Queremos que más personas se unan a nosotros y disfruten de las playas limpias,” concluyó.
