Cozumel Fishing Tournament by Rita Absher, Albatros Charters

Another year has come and gone.  It’s once again April and many of the locals are already starting to get ready for the major fishing tournament of Cozumel; the Rodeo de Lanchas Mexicanas.  Although there are other competitions throughout the year, this is by far the largest. This event is one of the island’s biggest (aside from Carnaval) for local participation (there is usually well over 100 boats) full of anxious fishermen.  The only thing that changes is the actual dates, but it’s always a weekend in May.  This year it happens to be the 3rd weekend which happens to be the 17th and 18th this year (Saturday and Sunday). Boats entered can be of just about any size (not that any one checks actual regulation size of the boats). There is also a large number of boats that come from other Mexican ports and even internationally.

This year’s entrance fee is 8,000 pesos and the prizes are big. The tournament is heavily sponsored by big names such as AvioMar, TransCaribe, Coke, Sol, Mexico Waterjets, Comex and Chankanaab, just to name a few. We even have some new sponsors this year; Mercedes Benz and Mama Linda. First place is a Mercedes Benz, while places 2 and 3 receive trucks.   After that there are still a couple of cars as well as 4 motos and then just a cash price for 10th place.  Albatros Charters has 2 boats to enter into the tournament; Albatros and Frigate.  Come aboard for the thrill of a lifetime and a chance and some very fine winnings!

We’ll see you in May! If you are not out on the water helping reel the fish in there is always a crowd on the downtown ferry pier at weigh in time. You can collect your friends and go be a part of the excitement of the weigh-ins each day.

Rita Absher is the owner of Albatros Charters, a company that specializes in deep sea fishing, scuba diving, snorkeling, sunset trips and El Cielo tours.  Albatros Charters features fully equipped, comfortable boats, with all the requirements, the lures, the bait, the licenses and even the refreshments.
