Cozumel News I Cozumel Readies for Independence Day Celebrations
In preparation for Cozumel’s Mexican Independence celebrations, Mayor, Fredy Marrufo, crowned Karla Mercedes Mendoza as the winner of the contest “Embajadora Independencia 2014” (Independence Ambassador 2014, in English). The crowning ceremony took place in the Andres Quintana Roo park, which is located in front of the Palacio Municipal Cozumel. In addition to beauty and grace, the Embajadora Independencia is given the task of promoting patriotic values among Cozumel’s youth.
Additionally, the Embajadora Independencia will also be on hand for the traditional re-enactment of the “Grito de Dolores,” which is the cry that fueled the independence in 1810. Cozumel’s “Grito” will take place on the evening of September 15th, when local residents and visitors congregate around the Palacio Municipal to participate in the ceremonies lead by the Mayor of Cozumel from the balcony at 11:00 p.m. Following the “grito” is an impressive fireworks display and other festivities including traditional foods as well as musical and folkloric dance performances. On September 16, Independence Day, the celebrations continue with a parade that goes through Cozumel’s downtown waterfront. Throughout the week, residents and visitors are invited to visit a fair near the Palacio Municipal that includes food stands, games, dancing and shopping
