Cozumel’s Punta Sur Road to Have 8 KM of Restoration Work

Island authorities have begun a revamp project of eight kilometers of a busy roadway in the south. The road to the Punta Sur Ecotourism Park is being rehabilitated, reported the General Director of the Cozumel Parks and Museums Foundation (FPMC), Juanita Alonso Marrufo.

The project is slated to be accomplished in 2 phases:  the first is the 4KMs that lead to the Celarain Lighthouse and then the four kilometers that lead to the beach and restaurant area.

The entire project is committed to using locally available materials in a sustainable way, so as not to affect the delicate infrastructure of the Eco-Park, so example the process calls for  mechanical scarification of the land, application of natural materials from the region such as sascab, humidification and compaction.  The area will not be paved, or asphalted, as with previous versions of the road.

At the same time, Cozumel’s ex-Presdent Alonso Marrufo announced that in  conjunction with the State Tourism Secretariat, work to improve the infrastructure of Chankanaab Natural Park is expected to begin in the second half of the year, thus strengthening the operation and image of one of the island’s most iconic and visited sites.

Las autoridades de la Isla han comenzado a trabajar en un proyecto de restauración de ocho kilómetros de una carretera muy transitada en el sur. Se está rehabilitando el camino hacia el Parque Ecoturístico de Punta Sur, informó la directora General de la Fundación de Parques y Museos de Cozumel (FPMC), Juanita Alonso Marrufo.

Está previsto que el proyecto se realice en 2 fases: la primera son los 4 km que conducen al Faro de Celarín, y después los 4 kilómetros que conducen a la zona de playa y restaurantes.

Para todo el proyecto se ha comprometido el uso de materiales disponibles localmente en una manera sostenible para no afectar la delicada infraestructura del Ecoparque. Por ejemplo, el proceso requiere escarificación mecánica del terreno, aplicación de materiales naturales de la región como el sascab, humidificación y compactación. El área no estará pavimentada, ni asfaltada como las versiones anteriores de la carretera.

Al mismo tiempo, la ex presidenta de Cozumel, Alonso Marrufo, informó que en colaboración con la Secretaría de Turismo del Estado, en el segundo semestre del año se espera comenzar con los trabajos para mejorar la infraestructura del Parque Natural Chankanaab, fortaleciendo así el funcionamiento y la imagen de uno de los sitios más distintivos y visitados de la Isla.
