Cozumel, welcome back –
In the first part of our series, we introduced the incredible work being done by Saving our Sharks Foundation & Cooperativa Kab Xok to protect and conserve our beloved shark populations. This week we’re going to take a closer look at the Saving Our Sharks Foundation project supporting the ex-fishermen who are making a difference in the Caribbean and beyond.
Part Two
Key Initiatives and Projects by Saving our Sharks:
In 2013, Saving our Sharks organized over 40 dive centers in Playa del Carmen, establishing a key community network that still thrives today promoting the BULL SHARK DIVE! This project has led to countless monitoring studies and created a community fund benefiting both the diving community and sharks.

In 2016, they began collaborating with the fishing sector of Isla Mujeres. Since 2017, they have worked together in shark tagging and monitoring. Check out this video, with Dr. Sylvia Earle endorsing the project:

Speaking of Dr. Sylvia Earl, have you seen MISSION BLUE? This documentary follows oceanographer Sylvia Earle’s campaign to save the world’s oceans from threats such as overfishing and toxic waste. Could be a great one to add to the roster for the next port closure day – it’s on NETFLIX.

Thanks to the Isla Mujeres Shark Initiative, thousands of sharks have been saved since July 2022. In this initiative, shark fishermen, dubbed “Masters of the Sea,” set aside 80% of their shark fishing gear to rehabilitate these important shark populations that inhabit and visit the Mexican Caribbean. This initiative has an impact at both regional and international levels, as some species travel as far as the United States and South America.
Fishermen have become our main allies.

Community Engagement and Education
We are on a mission to complement the efforts made by Saving Our Sharks Foundation in support of our friends at Cooperativa Kab Xok. Scuba Life Cozumel has had the pleasure of processing 18 certifications for the ex-fishermen varying between PADI Advanced Open Water + PADI Rescue Diver. On their first trip, we welcomed 9 Open Water divers – and they left as Advanced Divers. We weren’t sure what to expect as they embarked on the journey from Isla Mujeres – to Cancun – to Playa del Carmen – and final destination, Cozumel – but it wasnt long after we met them, that we knew this was the beginning of an incredible friendship. I was nervous, (Carly) – I was thinking – “Are they going to be interested in what we have to teach them, are they going to be engaged – surely after (some) 20 + years of fishing sharks, they aren’t going to want to learn about buoyancy, no-decompression limits, and deploying a buoy.” I was wrong. So very wrong.
These guys are AMAZING, they wanted to learn – they want a more sustainable future, promising a healthy ocean to future generations, and they’re ready for change. I was SKEPTICAL, but now – I am their NUMBER ONE FAN.
On their second trip, we were so excited to get them back in the water – our staff at Scuba Life Cozumel met them on the pier like old friends, sharing breakfast and talking about their future of hosting their tours – and getting the boats ready for their clients embarking on shark tagging expeditions as PADI Professionals. You can see them light up as this dream is soon to become a reality. The “Masters of the Sea”, did two LONG DAYS of training, mastering each skill – accomplishing their Rescue Certifications!

Shark Tagging and Monitoring
- One of the foundation’s flagship projects involves tagging and monitoring sharks to gather crucial data on their movements and behaviors. This data helps researchers understand migration patterns, habitat use, and population dynamics.
- On Feb. 24th, Scuba Life Cozumel joined the first tagging expedition of the year. This was a combined effort of Saving Our Sharks, Kab Xok Cooperative and Chooj Ajuil. 5 nurse sharks and 1 male bull shark were visually tagged, while the REAL stars of the show were two GREAT hammerheads! The Great Hammerhead sharks were GPS/Satellite tagged. Check out our video here.
- The Great Hammerhead named “Bob Patricio Armstrong” is a sub-adult, recorded at 8ft 10in long and 192 lbs tagged in Isla Mujeres. On March 3rd, he made his way down to Cozumel and stayed with us here until April 8th, when he decided on a trip back up north where he has pinged almost daily since.

Looking Ahead: How You Can Get Involved
The journey to protect our sharks is far from over, and we need your help. Whether you’re a diver, a resident, or simply a lover of the ocean, there are many ways you can contribute. From participating in citizen science projects to supporting conservation initiatives financially, every action counts. Segunda Parte
En 2013, Scuba Life Cozumel organizó más de 40 centros de buceo en Playa del Carmen para establecer una red comunitaria muy importante que aún continúa para promover el BUCEO CON EL TIBURÓN TORO. Este proyecto ha dado lugar a innumerables estudios de vigilancia y creado un fondo comunitario que beneficia tanto a la comunidad dedicada al buceo como a los tiburones.

Por cierto, hablando acerca de la Dra. Sylvia Earle, ¿han visto el documental MISSION BLUE? Este documental sigue la camàña de la oceanógrafa Sylvia Earle para salvar a los océanos del mundo de las amenazas tales como la sobrepesca y los residuos tóxicos. Puede ser una buena opción para que vean el documental la próxima ocasión que cierre el puerto; está en NETFLIX.

Gracias a la Iniciativa Tiburón Isla Mujeres, se han salvado miles de tiburones desde julio de 2022. En esta Iniciativa, pescadores de tiburones, a quienes apodan los “Amos del Mar”, reservan 80% de sus equipos de pesca para apoyar la rehabilitación de estas importantes poblaciones de tiburones que habitan y visitan en Caribe Mexicano. Esta Iniciativa tiene impacto no sólo nacional sino también internacional ya que algunas de las especies viajan hasta Estados Unidos y Sudamérica.
Los pescadores se han convertido en nuestros principales aliados.

Compromiso de la Comunidad y Educación
Nuestra misión es complementar los esfuerzos realizados por la Fundación Saving Our Sharks en apoyo a nuestros amigos de Cooperativa Kab Xok. Scuba Life Cozumel se complace en haber gestionado 18 certificaciones para los ex pescadores en Buceo PADI Avanzado en Aguas Abiertas + Buceo PADI de Rescate. ( PADI Advanced Open Water + PADI Rescue Diver.)En el primer viaje, recibimos a 9 buzos certificados en Aguas Abiertas y se fueron como Buzos Avanzados. No estábamos seguros en cuanto a qué esperar cuando se embarcaron en el viaje de Isla Mujeres a Cancún y a Playa del Carmen, siendo Cozumel su último destino; pero no transcurrió mucho tiempo después de conocerlos cuando supimos que este era el inicio de una amistad increíble. Estaba nerviosa (Carly) mientas por mi cabeza cruzaba: “¿Van a estar interesados en lo que les enseñaremos?¿Se van a comprometer? De seguro, después de (unos) 20 años o más de pescar tiburones, no van a querer aprender sobre la flotabilidad, los límites de las inmersiones sin descompresión y el uso de la boya”. Estaba equivocada. Muy equivocada.
Estos chicos son INCREÍBLES. Querían aprender. Quieren un futuro más sostenible haciendo la promesa de un océano sano para las generaciones futuras y están preparados para el camio. Fui ESCÉPTICA, y ahora soy su ADMIRADORA NÚMERO UNO.
En su segundo viaje, estábamos tan emocionados de tenerlos de regreso en el agua que nuestro personal de Scuba Life Cozumel se reunió con ellos como viejos amigos, compartiendo el desayuno y platicando de su futuro como anfitriones de excursiones y alistar las embarcaciones para sus clientes que, como Profesionales PADI, hacen el viaje para etiquetar tiburones. Pueden ver cómo se entusiasman ya que este sueño muy pronto se convertirá en realidad. Los “Amos del Mar” realizaron dos LARGOS DÍAS de capacitación, dominando cada técnica, ¡obtenindo sus Certificaciones como Buzos de Rescate!

Etiquetado y Monitoreo de Tiburones
- Uno de los proyectos emblemáticos de la Fundación consiste en el etiquetado y monitore de tiburones para recopilar datos cruciales sobre sus movimientos y comportamientos. Estos datos ayudan a los investigadores a comprender los patrones de migración, el uso del hábitat y la dinámica de la población.
- El 24 de febrero, Scuba Life Cozumel se unió a la primera expedición de etiquetado del año. Este fue un esfuerzo combinado de Saving Our Sharks Cooperativa Kab Xok y Chooj Ajuil. Se etiquetaron 5 tiburones nodriza y 1 tiburón toro macho, ¡mientras que las VERDADERAS estrellas del espectáculo fueron dos tiburones martillo GIGANTES! Los tiburones martillo gigantes fueron etiquetados con GPS/satélite. Vea nuestro video aquí.
- El tiburón martillo gigante llamado “Bob Patrcio Armstron” es un sub-adulto que mide 2.70 mts (8.10 pies) y pesa 87 kilos (192 libras)que fue etiquetado del Isla Mujeres. El 3 de marzo llegó a Cozumel y se quedó aquí hasta el 8 de abril cuando decidió hacer la travesía de regreso hacia el norte donde, desde entonces, su señal ha sido detectada casi a diario.

Mirando hacia el futuro: De qué manera puede participar
El proceso para proteger a nuestros tiburones está lejos de terminar y necesitamos su ayuda. Ya sea que usted es un buso local o simplemente ama el océano, existen muchas formas para contribuir. Desde participar en proyectos científicos e los ciudadanos hasta apoyando económicamente a las iniciativas de conservación; toda acción cuenta. Una ex yanqui de Connecticut quien llama hogar a Cozumel desde hace más de 15 años. Laura escapó al Caribe hace años, desplazándose de una isla a otra dando clases de BUCEO. Se dedicó a perder el tiempo en Jamaica y finalmente se detuvo en Cozumel para pasar unas vacaciones de 2 semanas que aún no terminan. Convenciendo a sus padres que pagaran una elegante universidad privada, obtuvo su título en Periodismo y Laura crea semanalmente Cozumel 4You, medios sociales y artículos promocionales sobre la Isla y también es moderadora en el grupo Cozumel 4 You en Facebook que actualmente cuenta con 25,000 miembros. Fabián, s umuy tolerante marido, desde hace mucho tiempo se resignó a no tener vida privada, pues se ha visto implicado en los diversos proyectos y planes que urde Laura. Son orgullosos padres de diversos perros y gatos rescatados. Mientras contempla su paso a través de la vida en el Caribe mexicano,Laura continúa siendo la pesadilla en la existencia de su muy tradicional suegra mexicana.
