Advance of the Management Program of the Cozumel Watershed Committee

Cozumel, Quintana Roo, June 20, 2024 – At a press conference held on June 18 of this year, representatives of the Island’s Watershed Committee presented the progress of the Management Program of the Cozumel Watershed Committee 2023-2027.
The main objective of the program, which has been developed jointly by the three levels of government and organized civil society, is to guarantee the sustainable management of water on the island, a vital resource for the economic, social and environmental development of Cozumel.
The creation of the Cozumel Watershed Committee is a step that has been pending for years. This is an important topic that sometimes the community does not know in depth. The committee serves as a platform for coordination and agreement between all actors involved in water management, from authorities to users and environmental organizations.
The Management Program of the Cozumel Watershed Committee 2023-2027 is 20% advanced and is based on an in-depth diagnosis of the current water situation on the island. This diagnosis has identified a series of problems, including:
- The poor condition of some drinking water and sewage networks.
- The precarious management of wastewater in some areas, especially in the coastal area.
- Lack of knowledge about the quantity and quality of available water resources.
To address these problems, the Management Program of the Cozumel Watershed Committee 2023-2027 proposes a series of strategic actions, among which the following stand out:
- Carrying out a census of wells and evaluating their operation.
- The implementation of water quality monitoring programs.
- The rehabilitation and modernization of hydraulic infrastructure.
- The promotion of environmental education campaigns to raise awareness among the population about the importance of water.
Local authorities and members of the Cozumel Watershed Committee called on the entire community to participate in the implementation of the Management Program. “United we are greater,” commented one of the committee’s managers. “Caring for our most important resource, water, requires everyone’s efforts.”
Within this program, knowledge of reforestation is also enriched, both in the recovery of resources in the jungle, to the issue of the island’s reefs damaged by the phenomenon of coral bleaching.
The committee, made up of 34 civil society organizations, companies and government agencies, also addresses the analysis of the quality of the water in the cenotes, whose underground connectivity maintains and increases its importance as it is the only water resource to meet the needs of the people. inhabitants and the tourism demander.

Cozumel, Quintana Roo, 20 de junio de 2024 – En rueda de prensa realizada el 18 de junio del presente año, los representantes del Comité de Cuenca de la Isla, presentaron el avance del Programa de Gestión del Comité de Cuenca Cozumel 2023-2027.
El programa, que ha sido desarrollado en conjunto por los tres niveles de gobierno y la sociedad civil organizada, tiene como objetivo principal garantizar la gestión sustentable del agua en la isla, un recurso vital para el desarrollo económico, social y ambiental de Cozumel.
La creación del Comité de Cuenca de Cozumel es un paso que se tenia pendiente durante años. Este es un tema importante que a veces la comunidad no lo conoce a fondo. El comité serve como una plataforma para la coordinación y concertación entre todos los actores involucrados en la gestión del agua, desde las autoridades hasta los usuarios y las organizaciones ambientales.
El Programa de Gestión del Comité de Cuenca Cozumel 2023-2027 lleva un avance de un 20% y se basa en un diagnóstico profundo de la situación actual del agua en la isla. Este diagnóstico ha identificado una serie de problemáticas, incluyendo:
- El mal estado de algunas redes de agua potable y alcantarillado.
- El precario manejo de aguas residuales en algunas zonas, especialmente en la zona costera.
- La falta de conocimiento sobre la cantidad y calidad de los recursos hídricos disponibles.
Para abordar estas problemáticas, el Programa de Gestión del Comité de Cuenca Cozumel 2023-2027 propone una serie de acciones estratégicas, entre las que destacan:
- La realización de un censo de pozos y la evaluación de su funcionamiento.
- La implementación de programas de monitoreo de la calidad del agua.
- La rehabilitación y modernización de la infraestructura hidráulica.
- La promoción de campañas de educación ambiental para sensibilizar a la población sobre la importancia del agua.
Las autoridades locales y los miembros del Comité de Cuenca de Cozumel hicieron un llamado a toda la comunidad a participar en la implementación del Programa de Gestión. “Unidos somos más grandes”, comento uno de los encargados del comité.”El cuidado de nuestro recurso más importante, el agua, requiere del esfuerzo de todos”.
Dentro de este programa también se enriquece el conocimiento de la reforestación, tanto en la recuperación de los recursos en la selva, hasta el tema de los arrecifes de la isla dañados por el fenómeno del blanqueamiento del coral.
El comité, integrado por 34 organizaciones de la sociedad civil, empresas y organismos gubernamentales, aborda también el análisis sobre la calidad del agua en los cenotes, cuya conectividad subterránea mantiene y eleva su importancia por ser el único recurso hídrico para cubrir las necesidades de los habitantes y el demandante turismo.
