This upcoming weekend marks the 42nd year of the “Rodeo de Lanchas Mexicanas,” Cozumel’s largest fishing tournament of the year. In fact, it’s one of the island’s biggest events overall, aside from Carnaval and the Feria de Cedral. Competitors from all over Mexico, and even abroad, are registered for this tournament, and organizers are expecting over 200 boats to compete. Prizes for an event of this caliber are huge, this year there are 5 vehicles, including a Mercedes Benz sport van as the grand prize. Additionally, there are scooters as well as cash prizes. Not participating? Be sure and check out the excitement at the downtown pier on Saturday and Sunday afternoon as the competitors come to weigh in their catch!
According to some sources, this will be the first year that Marlins and other billfish will be catch-and-release, however, many of the details, such as to how these catches will be officially documented have not been fully addressed. There is a banquet celebration for all participants prior to the actual tournament, where the new official rules should be clearly explained. For more information, check out the tournament webpage.
