A year after its inception the Cozumel mangrove re-forestation project is going strong. Rafael Chacón Díaz , the Director of the Municipal Department of Environment and Ecology has reported significant project growth:  plant growth, that is.   Last year, as part of a youth awareness program, the Ecology Department planted two thousand red mangrove seeds at the Punta Sur Eco-Park.  The mangrove seedlings appear strong and healthy, and,  when they reach a certain height, will be used to re-forest mangroves which have been negatively impacted by weather, such as hurricane storm surges.
