Deep Sea Fishing Peak Season Still Going Strong in Cozumel

Traditionally, April – July has always been the peak season for deep sea fishing in Cozumel, and the Yucatan Peninsula.

Because of the abyssal trench running between the mainland and Cozumel, the area is a mecca for deep sea fishing, including billfish such as Blue Marlin, White Marlin and Sailfish.  Tournaments practice “Catch & Release” policies with these bill fish, and it’s suggested that all anglers do the same.

The majority of fishing tournaments are held during peak season.

For more than 45 years, Cozumel has hosted the “Rodeo de Lanchas Mexicanas,” in early May, which marks the beginning of Deep Sea Fishing Season in the area.

Several other locations throughout the State have their own tournaments including the “Nuestra Señora del Carmen,” which took place in Playa del Carmen on July 17th.

In theory, the season should be winding down, for it’s traditional end, however, island fishermen are reporting “tight lines and screaming reels.”

Reports are that the season kicked off to a slow start, but isn’t ending, or even slowing down yet.

The Dorado are continuing to run strong, and since sailfish, such as Blue and White Marlin, follow the Dorado, which leaves  fishing boat captains, and their clients are smiling.

Rita Absher from Albatros Charters, added that the Dorado they’re catching isn’t quite as big as pre-pandemic years.  “People needed to feed their families, and I don’t think there was as much “catch and release” in that species.”
