Humane Society of Cozumel Island Ends Successful Public Spay Campaign

We are very happy and thankful. Last weekend we finished our 4 day high volume Spay/Neuter Campaign. Mexican veterinarians arrived to our Island from all over Mexico to volunteer for the campaign including:   Mexicalli, Mexico City, Merida, Cancun and Playa del Carmen.  Additionally, we also had local vets that are known for always helping those in need, that also rescue, give adoptions and have low cost spay/neuter programs.   We even had a Registered Veterinarian Technician flying all the way from Canada and amazing volunteers either local or foreign while they were visiting Cozumel.

The campaign goal was set at 800 free spay/neuter surgeries, for dogs and cats. On Wednesday we performed 132 and onThursday 134, and then the weekend came, on Sunday we reached the goal at 11 am. We ended the Free Spay and Neuter Campaign with 810 surgeries.

Thank you so much for being part of the solution, thank you Cozumel for being responsible owners and thanks a lot to our sponsors and volunteers, really, this wouldn’t be possible without them. This event was a real example of how people and organizations can work together, as a team for animal welfare, public health and education – which  makes Cozumel a better place. The Humane Society of Cozumel worked with the Animal Control Center, we were aided by the Cozumel Rotaract Club, Rescate Fenix Cozumel, a lot of local sponsors, national promotion by Fundacion Super Cachorros, and again, amazing vets that volunteered and fell in love with the Island (who wouldn´t?)

So, let’s keep working towards a better Cozumel, it was amazing to have 810 surgeries in four days, the Humane Society has a permanent free spay/neuter campaign  –  we do 200 surgeries per month, so please: be part of the solution, help us spread the word: adopt, don’t buy, spay/neuter your pet, volunteer.

Don’t forget to visit our Facebook page to see all the photos of the campaign, and find out who helped us in this big event.

An ex-Connecticut Yankee who has called Cozumel home for over 18 years, Laura ran away to the Caribbean years ago, bumped around the islands teaching SCUBA diving, lost some time in Jamaica, and finally stopped in Cozumel for a 2 week vacation that hasn’t ended yet. With a degree in Journalism from a fancy private college she convinced her parents to pay for, Laura writes, edits, and creates the weekly Cozumel 4 You news, social media, and promotional articles about the island, as well as moderates the Cozumel 4 You Facebook group, which currently has over 25,000 members. Her long suffering husband, Fabian, has long since resigned himself to having zero private life, as he’s been involved in her various schemes and plots since his arrival. Proud parents to a variety of rescue dogs and cats, Laura continues to be the bane of her traditional Mexican mother-in-law’s existence, as she muses her way through life in the Mexican Caribbean.
