Pitaya, also called Dragon Fruit is now in season and available around Cozumel.  A member of the cactus family, they are native to Mexico, Central and South America, however, they are also cultivated in several Asian countires where they are considered an exotic luxury.

Pitaya is considered to be a “superfood” since it is loaded with nutritional and medicinal properties.   The flavor of the fruit is often likened to a Kiwi because of the abundant small black seeds.  The flowers of the pitaya generally bloom overnight and wilt in the morning.  Here’s a link to some more information about this abundantly available superfruit.
