International Lionfish Culinary Festival from May 22 to 24 in Cozumel
José Canto, president of the Cozumel fishermen’s cooperative, has announced an international collaboration with fishing groups in Costa Rica to address the problem of the high population of lionfish. These Costa Rican groups, supported by government resources, seek to learn from Cozumel’s experience in controlling this invasive species.
As part of this collaboration, the first International Lionfish Culinary Festival will be held May 22-24 in Cozumel. This event aims to promote the consumption of lionfish, presenting it in a variety of international dishes. The Costa Rica Fishermen’s Association has recognized the successful efforts of the Cozumel cooperative in lionfish management and seeks to replicate these strategies in its own waters.
Lionfish, which have become an invasive species in the Caribbean, represent a significant challenge due to their rapid growth and negative impact on marine ecosystems. Despite having considerable financial support, Costa Rican fishermen face difficulties in the management and marketing of lionfish, in part due to a lack of knowledge and taboos regarding its consumption.
José Canto explained that the cooperation includes an exchange scheduled for October, where issues such as the control, marketing and dissemination of lionfish will be addressed. The goal is not only to help Costa Rica control the lionfish population, but also to establish a network of mutual support between the two nations.
The Lionfish Culinary Festival in Cozumel seeks not only to offer a solution to environmental problems, but also to encourage the local economy through gastronomy. The organizers hope that this event will encourage the consumption of lionfish, thus helping to control its population and protect marine ecosystems.

Festival Culinario Internacional del Pez León del 22 al 24 de mayo en Cozumel
José Canto, presidente de la cooperativa de pescadores de Cozumel, ha anunciado una colaboración internacional con grupos pesqueros de Costa Rica para abordar la problemática de la alta población de pez león. Estos grupos costarricenses, respaldados por recursos gubernamentales, buscan aprender de la experiencia de Cozumel en el control de esta especie invasora.
Como parte de esta colaboración, se llevará a cabo el primer Festival Culinario Internacional del Pez León del 22 al 24 de mayo en Cozumel. Este evento tiene como objetivo promover el consumo de pez león, presentándolo en una variedad de platillos internacionales. La Asociación de Pescadores de Costa Rica ha reconocido los exitosos esfuerzos de la cooperativa de Cozumel en el manejo del pez león y busca replicar estas estrategias en sus propias aguas.
El pez león, que se ha convertido en una especie invasora en el Caribe, representa un desafío significativo debido a su rápido crecimiento y su impacto negativo en los ecosistemas marinos. A pesar de contar con apoyo económico considerable, los pescadores costarricenses enfrentan dificultades en el manejo y comercialización del pez león, en parte debido a la falta de conocimiento y a tabúes sobre su consumo.
José Canto explicó que la cooperación incluye un intercambio programado para octubre, donde se abordarán temas como el control, la comercialización y la difusión del pez león. El objetivo es no solo ayudar a Costa Rica a controlar la población de pez león, sino también establecer una red de apoyo mutuo entre las dos naciones.
El Festival Culinario del Pez León en Cozumel busca no solo ofrecer una solución a la problemática ambiental, sino también incentivar la economía local mediante la gastronomía. Los organizadores esperan que este evento fomente el consumo del pez león, ayudando así a controlar su población y proteger los ecosistemas marinos.
