A new museum featuring the art of Mexican painter Frida Kahlo is in the works to open in early 2017 in Playa del Carmen, located on the mainland just off the coast of Cozumel.  The new projects director and curator Ofelia Martinez Garcia announced that the new location will be located next to the restaurant Frida Kahlo, located right on Av. Quinta in the downtown shopping area.

The Curator also announced their intention to display works of the iconic painters on loan from private collections as well as petition the Bank of Mexico for other Kahlo paintings.  There will also be additional space for other artists to display their works.

This would be the second Magdalena Carmen Frida Kahlo y Calderon, with the first being the artist’s actual home, “La Casa Azul,” located in Coyoacan, Mexico City.  The wife of the equally famous muralist, Diego Rivera, whom she married not once but twice, Frida Kahlo was born on July 6, 1907, and she died at the age of 47.  Her likeness can be found on the $500 peso bill.  In honor of her 106 birthday the Museo Frida Kahlo complied a fascinating YouTube video of 106 Memories of the artist.
