Cozumel Cave Diver Honored by the National Institute of History

Just like the Yucatan Peninsula, Cozumel also has a network of centoes, or fresh-water sinkholes.  Cozumel resident, German Yañez is one of the pioneers of the underwater exploration of the Yucatan’s centoes.  In fact, he is also the author of two technical diving manuals , and even has a species he discovered named after him.  German was recently honored by the  National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH).  Last week, he lectured at the Museo de la Isla,   on his explorations and the importance of mapping out the cenotes.  For more information on this distinquished island resident, please check out his webpage.

Al igual que la Península de Yucatán, Cozumel también cuenta con una red de cenotes o pozos de agua dulce. Germán Yañez, habitante de Cozumel, es uno de los pioneros en la exploración submarina de los cenotes en Yucatán. De hecho, también es autor de dos manuales técnicos de buceo e incluso una especie que él descubrió, lleva su nombre  su nombre. Hace poco, el Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia (INAH) rindió honores a Germán. La semana pasada Germán ofreció una conferencia en el Museo de la Isla acerca de sus exploraciones y de la importancia de trazar mapas de los cenotes. Cozumel Rotaract Club & Loveland Colorado Rotary Work Together

Ever heard of Rotary Club?  If not, let me introduce you to a 102 year old service organization with a motto of ”Service above Self” that has over 1.2 million members in nearly every country.  Members are committed to both community and international service.   Rotary also has a youth leadership program called ‘Interact’ where you can be associated with service at a young age, say from 12-18.  Last week in Cozumel 7 members from Loveland Colorado Rotary and Interact students visited Cozumel and blessed many in Cozumel with their  “Service above Self.”  The Objective was to build lasting relationships between the Rotaract Club of Cozumel, Mexico and Interact Club of Loveland, Colorado. In addition to assisting Cozumel’s Rotaract Club in identifying interested students to form an Interact club in Cozumel, we also have a vision to continue exchanges between the two clubs. This is an opportunity to share each member’s inspirations for their community and share future fundraising/ projects ideas. This is not just a visit with a few service projects, but a way to initiate a new generation of Rotarians in building relationships that last which will also positively affect each of them personally and within their communities.  Colorado students met with local Rotary and Rotaract clubs and participated in the exchange of officers for the new year 2012/2013.
 
The Colorado Rotarians brought in school supplies filled in 15 backpacks, and enough energy to expand over a week of fun filled service projects, including  a Collection Trash Day with ‘Kids Clean Cozumel,”  work on the new Casita Corazon and a fiesta for kids and their families.  Casita Corazon is  a therapy house, sponsored by Carrie’s Heart,  which is also covered by other volunteers at www.friendsofcozumel.com. 

The visit also included a trip to Las Fincas,  to distribute tooth brushes and soccer balls, an orphanage visit, a tour of the DiF center for domestic violence, a site visit of the  future community gardens that Rotary Cozumel is initiating and the finishing the week with an orientation of the turtle rescue program, and a boat to Cielo (my idea)    These students will be back… They came, they served, they grew and Cozumel is a little better because of their visit.

El Club Rotaract de Cozumel y el grupo de Rotarios de Loveland, Colorado, trabajando juntos

¿Alguna vez ha escuchado hablar del Club Rotarios? De no ser así, permítanme presentarles a una organización con 102 años de servicio cuyo lema es “Dar de Sí antes de pensar en Sí”, y la cual cuenta con más de 1.2 millones de miembros en cada país. Los miembros se encuentran comprometidos tanto con los servicios comunitarios como con los internacionales. Rotarios también cuentan un programa de liderazgo juvenil llamado “Interact”, a través del cual  en el que puede uno relacionarse con el servicio a una edad temprana, digamos 12 a 18 años. La semana pasada 7 miembros estudiantes de Rotarios de Loveland, Colorado y estudiantes de Interact visitaron Cozumel y bendijeron a muchos en Cozumel con su lema de “Dar de Sí antes de pensar en Si”. El objetivo fue el de cimentar relaciones duraderas entre el Club Rotaract de Cozumel México y el Club Interact de Loveland, Colorado. Además de ayudar al Club Rotaract de Cozumel a identificar estudiantes interesados en formar un Club Interact en Cozumel, se tiene la visión de continuar los intercambios entre ambos clubes. Esta es una oportunidad para compartir las aspiraciones de cada miembro para sus comunidades y para compartir futuras recaudaciones de  fondos e ideas de proyectos. Esta no es sólo una visita con algunos proyectos de servicio, sino una forma de iniciar una nueva generación de Rotarios, estableciendo relaciones duraderas, lo cual también redundará de manera positiva y personal en cada uno de ellos así como en sus comunidades. Los estudiantes de Colorado se reunieron con los clubes Rotarios y Rotaract y participaron en el intercambio del cuerpo directivo para el año nuevo 2012/13.

Los Rotarios procedentes de Colorado trajeron consigo útiles escolares con los cuales llenaron 15 mochilas, además de suficiente energía como para extenderla durante más de una semana llena de proyectos de servicios divertidos,  incluyendo el Día Para Recoger Basura junto con “Kids Clean Cozumel” (los Niños Limpian Cozumel), trabajar en la nueva Casita Corazón y una fiesta para niños y sus familias. Casita Corazón en una casa dedicada a terapias, patrocinada por Carrie’s Heart, donde también participan otros voluntarios, www.friendsofcozumel.com

La visita incluyó un viaje a Las Fincas, para distribuir cepillos de dientes y balones de fútbol, una visita al orfanatorio, una excursión al centro DIF para violencia intrafamiliar, una visita a los futuros jardines comunitarios que el Club Rotarios esta iniciando, para terminar la semana con una orientación sobre el programa de rescate de tortugas y un paseo en lancha al Cielo (mi idea). Estos estudiantes regresarán… Vinieron, prestaron servicio, crecieron y Cozumel se encuentra un poco mejor debido a su visita.

How I came to Call Cozumel Home: A Series by Island Residents

My husband Mike and I had been coming to Cozumel for several dive trips and always felt like this was home whenever we stepped off the plane in Cozumel. We had been to Cozumel 4 times in 2006, so it  was getting pretty familiar to us. We had booked a live aboard dive trip for March 2007starting in St. Kitts, but in January 2007 decided that another quick trip to Cozumel was a great week escape from the wet, rainy weather In Vancouver BC, Canada. We were enjoying some great diving and always good food
at some of our favourite restaurants.  We walked by Galleria Azul on 10th and across from this gallery,  we noted that one of the bars would have LIVE music on Friday night. We stopped into this bar on Friday and ordered some drinks and food while waiting for the music, but sadly it was cancelled due to rain.

Always chatting with friendly people we met, a lady stopped by our table to say Hi, and I asked her if she lived here? And if so, what she did here to keep busy?   Nelda mentioned that she and her business partner, Harry, had created a little tour company 3 years previously and that it was actually for sale now…She motioned for Harry to come over from the bar and chat with us and give us some details. I wrote a few notes on a paper napkin and we chatted about the details before leaving that night and going back to our hotel room and checking out on the internet, their website and what kind of tours they actually offered.

It was always our dream to live in a tropical country during those wet and cold months in Canada, but had no idea that this quick dive trip and meeting Harry & Nelda would change our lives forever.

We discussed the option of buying this business here in Cozumel over the next day while diving and what we would actually do with this opportunity that seemed to have crossed our paths in such a unique way!  We sent an email to Harry and agreed to meet again at the same location to discuss more details and decided that we would buy this tour company.  Having no cheque book with us to offer a deposit, and with a simple hand shake, it was agreed that we would buy this tour company and send a deposit in the mail to a Harry’s Texas address when we returned to Canada.  We met with their accountant, Gretchen Martin before leaving Cozumel on Tuesday and papers were to be transferred within two weeks. We needed to return to Cozumel in that time frame, so in person the corporation papers could be transferred.  Having this wonderful accountant, who spoke minimum English 5 years ago was an angel in disguise. She has steered us into the right direction for all our business and personal paperwork that one needs to be able to live and work here in Mexico.

We have owned www.cozumeltours.com since March 2007 now, and continue to network with various business owners on the island in order to offer our guests unique and exciting tours, while they are here on the island for a day on a cruise ship or for guests who are staying in hotels or condos.

 Mi esposo Mike y yo habíamos venido a Cozumel en diversas ocasiones para bucear, y siempre que bajábamos del avión en Cozumel sentíamos como si este fuera nuestro hogar. En el año 2006 visitamos Cozumel 4 veces, así que ya nos era bastante conocida. En el mes de Marzo del año 2007 reservamos un crucero de buceo, comenzando en St. Kitts, pero en el mes de Enero del año 2007 decidimos que otro viaje rápido a Cozumel sería un gran escape de una semana del clima húmedo y lluvioso de Vancouver, BC, Canadá. Disfrutamos de un gran buceo y siempre de la buena comida en algunos de nuestros restaurantes favoritos. Pasamos frente a Galería Azul en la 10ª, y frente a esta galería nos percatamos que uno de los bares iba a tener música en VIVO el viernes por la noche. Fuimos a este bar el día viernes, y ordenamos bebidas y comida en lo que esperábamos la música, pero desafortunadamente se canceló debido a la lluvia.

Charlando siempre con la gente amigable que encontramos, una señora se detuvo en nuestra mesa para saludarnos y le pregunté si vivía aquí. Y, de ser así, ¿qué hacía para mantenerse ocupada? Nelda mencionó que desde hacía 3 años ella y su socio Harry previamente habían creado una pequeña compañía de excursiones y que en ese momento estaba en venta. Le hizo señas a Harry para que viniera desde el bar, platicara con nosotros y nos diera más detalles. En una servilleta de papel escribí algunas notas; platicamos acerca de los detalles antes de salir esa noche y al regresar a nuestra habitación en el hotel, verificamos su página web y el tipo de excursiones que en efecto ofrecían.

Siempre había sido nuestro sueño vivir en un país tropical durante esos meses húmedos y fríos en Canadá, pero no tenía idea que este viaje rápido de buceo y conocer a Harry y a Nelda, cambiaría nuestras vidas para siempre.

Al día siguiente durante el buceo, platicamos la opción de comprar este negocio en Cozumel, ¡y lo que realmente haríamos con esta oportunidad que parecía haberse cruzado en nuestros caminos de manera tan peculiar! Enviamos un correo a Harry para reunirnos de nuevo en el mismo lugar con el fin de comentar más detalles, y tomamos la decisión de comprar esta compañía de excursiones. Sin tener la chequera para dar un depósito, con un simple apretón de manos, se acordó que adquiriríamos esta compañía de excursiones y se enviaría un deposito al domicilio de Harry en Texas tan pronto regresamos a Canadá. Antes de despedirnos de Cozumel el día martes, conocimos a su contadora, Gretchen Martin, los documentos se transmitirían en un par de semanas. Dentro de ese lapso debíamos regresar a Cozumel para que los documentos de la sociedad fueran transmitidos personalmente. Al tener una contadora maravillosa, quien hace 5 años hablaba poco inglés, era tener un ángel disfrazado. Ella nos ha orientado en la dirección correcta en todo lo que referente a nuestro negocio así como con los documentos personales que se requieren para  vivir y trabajar en México.

Desde el mes de marzo del año 2007 somos propietarios de www.cozumeltours.com y creando una red la red con diversos propietarios de negocios de la Isla con el fin de ofrecer a nuestros huéspedes excursiones únicos y emocionantes durante su estancia en la Isla ya sea por un día o en un buque turístico o para huéspedes que se hospedan en hoteles o en condominios.

Cozumel Turtle Season 2012: Update

The turtle nesting season keeps going with an outstanding amount of nests!  We’re currently up to  2,644 as of Monday afternoon. The Search and Rescue program starts on August 15 so if you're a good digger we could use your hands. Releasing season goes well,  a bit slow,  with one nest daily to observe. Time of the releasing goes from 5:30 pm to 6:00 pm so make sure to arrive a bit early to the eastern coast to locate the new turtle truck   (Black with turtle logos)  T-Shirts for sale at the end of the event in the truck.

Turtle Facts: Did you know sea turtles can still have babies even at the age of 80? Thats because the genes of the sea turtles decrease the aging process making them fertile for longer periods and to have an idea the organs of an 80 year old turtle are comparable to a younger one of 20. The lifespan of a turtle can go from 80 minimum to a maximum of 120 years.

Temporada de la Tortuga 2012 en Cozumel: Actualización

¡La Temporada de anidación de la Tortuga continúa con una excepcional cantidad de nidos! Hasta la tarde del lunes llevábamos 2,644. El programa de Búsqueda y Rescate inicia el 15 de agosto, así que si es usted un buen cavador, podríamos utilizar sus manos. La liberación de la temporada va bien, un poco lenta, con un nido diario para observar. El horario de liberación es de 5:30 p.m. a 6:00 p.m. así que asegúrense de llegar un poco antes a la costa oriente para ubicar al nuevo camión de tortugas (negro con logotipos de tortugas). Al final del evento, en el camión hay camisetas en venta.

Datos sobre las tortugas: ¿Sabía usted que las tortugas marinas pueden tener crías incluso a los 80 años de edad? Esto se debe a que los genes de las tortugas marinas disminuyen el proceso de envejecimiento haciéndolas fértiles durante periodos más largos; y, para que tengan una idea, los órganos de una tortuga de 80 años son similares a los de una más joven, de 20 de edad. La duración de vida de una tortuga fluctúa entre el  mínimo de 80 a un máximo de 120 años.

Humane Society Pets of the Week

Dog: Krusty, his name is fitting, we are so sorry to say! Krusty is 2 years old. His owner brought him to the Humane Society because she was tired of his skin condition. She admitted to our vet staff that she had never once taken Krusty to a vet for treatment. But she did give Krusty to her mechanics for treatment. The damage was clear, he was treated with aceite quemado (used engine oil) A common myth that this will cure skin problems in dogs, especially mange.

In reality Krusty does not have Mange. He has a mix of fungal skin problems with secondary bacterial infections, primarily related to the treatment he received. He is already so much better!!! Soothing medicated baths and gentle debridement of crust. 

The funny thing was his owner complained her daughter was becoming sick with a skin condition from the dog. It was just not possible for our vet to ask her if she took her daughter to the mechanic also for treatment. 

All it has taken is a little bit of TLC for a massive remarkable improvement for Krusty, who we hope to re-name Rusty soon…a great suggestion via Cheryl, who responded to his story and came out to help de-crustify Krusty and give him  healing touch therapy. Also a big thanks to our newest volunteer Jamie Burns for trimming him down, as she is an experienced pro-groomer! Every single day Krusty looks better. We are hopeful that he will be ready for adoption in the next 2 weeks!

Cat: Meet Sweetie! Sweetie came in via Casa Del Mar Hotel. Actually her babies were brought in ahead of her, very small and would not have survived with out her. Olivia rushed to the hotel and found mama fairly quickly. Lucky for us Payge stood up and agreed to foster her. Payge is going back to Canada August 4th, so Sweetie and her kittens must be moved ASAP. We need a foster home with the capability of weaning the 4 kittens over a week. This means taking 2 kittens away, than a few days later a 3rd kitten and then a 4th. 

One of the most remarkable things about Sweetie, is the same day all this happened we had a tiny kitten dropped off, the grey and white tabby. Sweetie accepted the kitten immediately and has cared for him as her own.

We DESPARTELY NEED A FOSTER PLACEMENT AS OF AUGUST 3rd. We have no where to maintain them at the Humane Society. Can anybody help them until the next foster spot opens up on August 11th? Please contact if you can help!

Las Mascotas de la Semana de la Sociedad Humanitaria

Perro: Su nombre le va bien, Krusty (“costroso”), ¡lamentamos decirlo! Krusty tiene 2 años de edad. Su propietaria lo trajo a la Sociedad Humanitaria pues estaba cansada del problema en la piel de Krusty. Ella admitió a nuestro equipo de veterinarios que nunca había llevado a Krusty para tratamiento; y sí dio a Krusty para tratamiento con los mecánicos. El daño era patente: le pusieron aceite quemado. El mito común es que ello curará problemas en la piel de los perros, especialmente la sarna.

La realidad es que Krusty no tiene sarna, sino una mezcla de problemas de micosis en la piel con infecciones bacterianas secundarias relacionadas, principalmente, con el tratamiento recibido. ¡¡Ya está mucho mejor!! Baños calmantes con medicamentos y una delicada debridación de la costra. 

Lo curioso es que su propietaria se quejaba que su hija tenía un padecimiento en la piel debido al perro. A nuestro veterinario no le fue posible preguntarle si también pidió al mecánico que aplicara el tratamiento para su hija.

Todo lo que se ha requerido la notable recuperación masiva de Krusty son cuidados con cariño y atención, a quien esperamos pronto darle un nuevo nombre…una gran sugerencia de parte de Cheryl, quien respondió a esta historia, acudió a ayudar a des-encostrar a Krusty y le proporcionó una terapia de curación al tacto. También agradecemos ampliamente a nuestra voluntaria más nueva, Jamie Burns, por recortarle el pelo, ¡pues es una experimentada peluquera canina! Cada día que transcurre, Krusty se ve mejor. ¡Esperamos que esté listo para ser adoptado en 2 semanas!   

Gato:¡ Conozcan a Sweetie!Sweetie llegó a través del hotel Casa del Mar. De hecho, a sus bebés los trajeron antes que a ella, estaban muy pequeños y no hubieran sobrevivido sin su presencia. Olivia fue a toda prisa al hotel y encontró a la mamá casi de inmediato. Corrimos con suerte pues Payge acordó adoptarla. Payge regresa a Canadá el 4 de agosto así que es necesario mudar a Sweetie y sus gatitos lo más pronto posible. Necesitamos una casa con la capacidad de destetar 4 gatitos durante una semana. Esto significa retirar a 2 gatitos, unos días después al 3º y luego al 4º.

Una de las cosas más sorprendentes acerca de Sweetie es que el mismo día que todo esto sucedió, nos trajeron a un pequeño gatito atigrado, gris y blanco. Sweetie acepto al gatito de inmediato y se ha hecho cargo de él como si fuera uno de los suyos.

Estamos DESESPERADOS POR ENCONTRAR UN LUGAR QUE LOS ADOPTE EL 3 DE AGOSTO. No tenemos lugar donde mantenerlos en la Sociedad Humanitaria. ¿Alguien puede ayudarlos hasta que el siguiente lugar de adopción abra el día 11 de agosto? Por favor pónganse en contacto con nosotros si les es posible.

Eastern Beaches to have Increased Vigilance During Turtle Season

In an effort to make this turtle nesting season, the most successful ever, Municipal authorities have announced that vigilance on the other side of the island will be increased, so that turtles will have a safe place to nest. Island residents are also strongly encouraged to leave their dogs at home, during nesting season. Some dogs have been known to dig holes in the sand in search of stray turtle eggs, and the scent of dogs on the beach, can also be a deterrent to a female turtle looking for a predator.

Aumentará la vigilancia en playas al oriente de Cozumel durante la temporada de la tortuga.

En un esfuerzo por hacer que esta temporada de anidación tenga un éxito rotundo, las autoridades municipales han anunciado que aumentará la vigilancia en extremo oriente de la Isla para que las tortugas tengan un lugar seguro para anidar. A los habitantes de la Isla también se les recomienda encarecidamente que durante la temporada de anidación dejen sus mascotas en casa. Se sabe que algunos perros escarban la arena buscando huevos de tortuga perdidos y el olor de los perros en la playa puede ser también un obstáculo para una tortuga hembra en busca de un depredador.

The Ceasar Salad Was Invented in Mexico

The ever-popular Ceasar salad is renown world-wide, however, it’s not common knowledge that this leafy staple was actually invented in Mexico.   Ceasar Cardini, who is credited with creating the salad was Italian by birth, immigrated to San Diego but during the Prohibition Era operated restaurants in Tijuana.  According to urban legend, one very busy night the kitchen ran short, and salads were made with what was on-hand.  In order to give a bit of flair, the salads were tossed at the tables.

La Ensalada César se concibió en México

La popularísima ensalada César es conocida en todo el mundo, pero algo que no es sabiduría popular es que este platillo de hoja verde fue concebido en México. César Cardini, a quien se le atribuye la creación de la ensalada, era italiano de nacimiento, emigró a San Diego y durante la época de la Ley Seca en los EUA, manejaba restaurantes en Tijuana. De acuerdo a la leyenda urbana, una noche muy ajetreada, la comida en la cocina se agotó y las ensaladas se prepararon con lo que había a la mano. Con el objeto de darle algo de estilo, las ensaladas fueron preparadas en las mesas.

Fundraiser for Joni Mitchell – Island resident, and active Humane Society volunteer, Joni Mitchell has been undergoing chemotherapy, and incurring huge medical expenses.  To assist someone who has selflessly given so much to the Cozumel community,  friends of hers are organizing a fundraiser for her at the Money Bar Beach Club on  Wednesday, August 22nd,  starting at 6 pm, with FUGGA playing live music.  There will be a silent auction as well, and if you would like to donate something to the auction, please contact Teresa Mentzer at bwycbabe@yahoo.com
