Hurricane Ernesto Brings Wind & Rain to Cozumel

Earlier this week, Hurricane Ernesto passed through the Yucatan Peninsula as a category 1 hurricane.  Here in Cozumel, heavy rains and high winds affected the island late Tuesday and the early hours of Wednesday morning.  The port was closed on Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning, mostly as a precautionary measure.

Hurricane season runs from June 1st, and continues through the end of October.  Although Cozumel hasn’t experienced a hurricane since Wilma, in 2005, the municipal government has an official hurricane information page, which offers up to date information and resources available on island.

A principios de esta semana el Huracán Ernesto atravesó la Península de Yucatán como huracán de categoría 1. Aquí en Cozumel lluvias y vientos fuertes afectaron la Isla la noche del día martes y durante las primeras horas de la mañana del miércoles. El Puerto permaneció cerrado la tarde del martes y la mañana del miércoles como mera medida de precaución.

La temporada de huracanes inicia el 1º del mes de junio y concluye a fines del mes de octubre. A pesar de que la Isla de Cozumel no se ha visto afectada por otro huracán desde Wilma en el año2005, el gobierno municipal cuenta con una página oficial de informativa sobre los huracanes, que ofrece información actualizada y los recursos disponibles en la isla.

Navy Rescues 3 Jamaican Fishermen After 17 Days at Sea

Three Jamaican fishermen, who set from Black River, St. Elizabeth, Jamaica, were rescued by Mexican Naval officials after 17 days at sea.  The boat captain, Glendall Hall, reported that he and the other castaways set out in a 10 meter fiberglass boat, in route to a nearby town, when they experienced engine problems and began to drift, for over 2 weeks at sea.  The “Lady Trudy,” and her crew were discovered, sinking, and delivered to the Cozumel Naval sector, where they received medical attention.  Amazingly enough, the most serious of their injuries was a sprained ankle, and severe sunburn.

La Marina rescata a 3 pescadores procedentes de Jamaica quienes permanecieron 17 días en el mar

Tras haber permanecido 17 días en el mar, tres pescadores oriundos de Jamaica, procedentes de Black River, St. Elizabeth, Jamaica, fueron rescatados por oficiales de la Marina mexicana. El capitán del bote, Glendall Hall, reportó que él y los demás náufragos emprendieron el viaje en un barco de fibra de vidrio de 10 mts. de eslora con rumbo hacia un poblado cercano, cuando sufrieron problemas con las máquinas y el bote comenzó a navegar a la deriva durante 2 semanas. El bote, “Lady Trudy”, y su tripulación fueron encontrados, hundiéndose, y entregados al sector naval de Cozumel en donde recibieron atención médica. Por sorprendente que parezca, la más seria de sus heridas fue un esguince de tobillo y severas quemaduras de sol.

How I came to Call Cozumel Home: A Series by Island Residents

"I am Leo and I spearfish." 

Fishing with a speargun in these days is considered as something perverse, cruel and anti ecological. But nothing is further from reality than these claims.

Less than 1% of harvested fish around the world, is caught with a speargun. The capture rate is much lower compared to industrial fishing.

I swim in the ocean, hold my breath, dive and catch a fish. The fish I shoot is an animal being free, in its own, natural environment, selected by size, has already multiplied itself and does not suffer that much as being thought. Beef for example mainly comes from a natural area that was cleared for this purpose, the animal has a controlled life, is not free, generates pollution, suffers much at death and is part of an endless chain.

"With great power comes great responsibility." 
We human beings have great power, we have fishing nets, hooks and spearguns. I do spearfish. Though I choose what I catch: by size (sexually mature), specy (not endangered), behaviour (not reproducing), time of year (season) and area (unprotected). I fish to share with our families, friends and guests. That is my greatest motivation, something very simple since the beginning of time: hunting for food, surviving, nothing more.

I respect protected species and protected areas: Last week I was lucky to see a school of big Tarpons very, very close to me. I fully enjoyed being in between them. Of course I will not shoot this protected specie. I love to freedive in Cozumel´s Marine Parc. It is beautiful. Of course I leave my speargun home.

Spearfishing while using a scuba tank is in my opinion having a wrong attitude and of course, not sustainable if we all start to do it, if you can not catch a fish on a single breath, then you do not fish.

I do not shoot fish for a great picture or to prove my manhood. I only spear the fish I like and that we're going to eat.

I also do spear lionfish. That will benefit the area for sure and the meat is delicious, especially for ceviche.

Spearfishing is not just shooting every fish that is passing by. I think and then pull the trigger. Great power, great responsibility...

Cómo he llegado a considerar a Cozumel como mi hogar. Sserie escrita por habitantes de la Isla

“Soy Leo, realizo mi pesca con arpón”.
La pesca con arpón en la actualidad se considera algo perverso, cruel y anti ecológico. Pero nada dista más lejos de la realidad que estos argumentos.

Menos de 1% de la pesca realizada alrededor del mundo es capturada con arpón. El índice de captura es mucho menor en comparación con la pesca industrial.

Yo nado en el océano. Contengo la respiración, y capturo un pez. El pescado que arponeo es un animal libre, en propio medio ambiente, seleccionado por tamaño y ya se ha reproducido así que no sufre tanto como se cree. Por ejemplo, la carne de res proviene de un área natural que ha sido autorizada para este fin; el animal tiene una vida controlada, no es libre, genera contaminación, sufre mucho al morir y es parte de una cadena interminable.

“Un gran poder conlleva a una gran responsabilidad”.
Los humanos tenemos gran poder, redes de pesca, anzuelos y arpones. Yo arponeo. Pero elijo lo que voy a capturar: tamaño (madurez sexual), especiado (que no esté en peligro de extinción), conducta (no se esté en época de reproducción), época del año (de temporada) y área (no protegida). La pesca la comparto con nuestras familias, amigos e invitados. Esa es mi mayor motivación, algo muy sencillo desde el principio de los tiempos: la cacería para obtener alimento, para sobrevivir, nada más.

Respeto a las especies y áreas protegidas: la semana pasada tuve la suerte de ver muy, muy cerca de mí una escuela de grandes sábalos. Disfruté mucho estar entre ellos. Desde luego que no disparo a esta especie protegida. Amo el buceo libre en el Parque Marino de Cozumel. Es muy bello. Naturalmente dejo mi arpón en casa.

Bucear con arpón cuando se lleva un tanque de buceo es, en mi opinión, tener una actitud equivocada y, desde luego, si todos comenzamos a hacerlo, no es sustentable. Si no se puede capturar un pez de una sola vez, entonces no se pesca.

Yo no le arponeo un pez para obtener una gran fotografía o para probar mi masculinidad. Tan sólo arponeo el pez que me gusta y que vamos a comer.

También arponeo al pez león. Ello seguramente beneficiará a la zona y la carne es deliciosa, especialmente en ceviche.
Arponear no es sólo disparar a cada pez que pasa. Primero pienso y después aprieto el gatillo. Mucho poder, gran responsabilidad…

Cozumel Turtle Season 2012: Update

We are up to 3144 marked nests.  With Hurricane Ernesto hitting just south of Cozumel, we went to check the possible damages. With a higher than usual tide, some nests will be damaged or gone.  Our last inspection showed that most of the turtle nests are ok and are on higher ground, so they won’t be affected. 

Turtle Trivia: Did you know that sea turtles cry? But not because of pain or anything, they have Salt Glands, located in the eyes, their primary function is to balance the amount of salt in their systems and second to wipe out the sand out of their eyes

Temporada de la Tortuga 2012 en Cozumel: Actualización

Ya llegamos a 3144 nidos mercados. Con el ingreso del huracán Ernesto justo al sur de Cozumel, fuimos a verificar posibles daños. Con una marea más alta de lo normal, algunos nidos se dañarán o perderán. Nuestra última inspección mostraba que la mayoría de los nidos de tortugas estaban bien y sobre terrenos más elevados, así que no se verán afectados.

Trivia Tortuga: ¿Sabía que las tortugas marinas lloran? No por dolor o por cualquier otra cosa, cuentan con unas glándulas especializadas para excretar sal y su función principal es la de equilibrar la cantidad de sal en sus sistemas y la otra para limpiarse la arena de sus ojos.

Humane Society Pets of the Week

Api: This is Mama Api, rescued living on the side of the highway here in Cozumel with her 6 puppies April 18th, 2012. She is not a big dog at all: 8 kg. All of her puppies are being adopted locally. Sadly always mama is left behind. Api has a very sweet nature, very loving and would make a great family pet. We sure hope Api finds a home in the near future. She is approximately 1 year old

We have many black kittens growing up fast. Please if you could find it in your heart to give a black cat a home, contact us. Once they are full grown adults it would seem almost impossible to find them homes. We have currently have 9 black kittens ranging from 8 weeks old to 16 weeks old and we have Furry our adult black cat who has been waiting forever for a home. Onix and Humo featured in this week's photos, are a very playful, super loving pair and are brothers. They purr the instant you pick them up and cuddle them. 

This and many other animals are waiting for you at the shelter, remember to visit us to meet them, who knows, you'll might find a very special friend. For more information please contact pets@humanecozumel.org.

A huge thank you to all our Hurricane foster volunteers!!!!! With Hurricane Ernesto approaching, we enacted our hurricane emergency response phone tree. Many puppies, smaller fragile dogs and kittens are now safe and dry and made space for us to secure the shelter dogs to dry areas of the shelter. Las Mascotas de la Semana de la Sociedad Humanitaria

Api: Esta es Mamá Api, fue rescatada en Abril 18, 2012 mientras vivía a un lado de una carretera en Cozumel con sus 6 cachorros. No es una perra grande: 8 Kg. Todos sus cachorritos están siendo adoptados localmente. Tristemente mamá siempre se queda atrás. Api es muy dulce y cariñosa, sería una gran mascota para la familia. Desde luego esperamos que Api encuentre un hogar pronto, ella cuenta con aproximadamente 1 año de edad.

Tenemos muchos gatitos negros creciendo rápidamente. Por favor, si usted encuentra en su corazón dar un hogar a un gatito negro, por favor póngase en contacto con nosotros. Cuando ya son adultos y han madurado, es casi imposible encontrarles un hogar. De momento tenemos 9 gatitos negros que van de 8 a 16 semanas de edad; y tenemos a Furry, nuestro gato negro adulto que ha estado por siempre esperando encontrar un hogar. Ónix y Humo aparecen en las fotos de esta semana y son muy juguetones, un par súper cariñoso y son hermanos. Ronronean al momento que se les levanta y acurruca.

Estos y muchos animalitos mas te esperan en el refugio, recuerda visitarnos para conocerlos, uno nunca sabe, podrías encontrar a un compañero muy especial. Para obtener más información póngase en contacto con pets@humanecozumel.org.

¡¡Un enorme agradecimiento a todos nuestros voluntarios por el huracán!! Con el huracán Ernesto aproximándose pusimos en marcha nuestro árbol de respuesta inmediata a emergencia de huracán. Muchos cachorritos, perros y gatitos pequeños y frágiles, están ahora seguros y secos, y nos dejaron espacio para proporcionar a los perros del refugio áreas secas dentro del mismo. Mr. Sancho's Triathalon: A Great Opportunity for First Timers

Cozumel will have a sprint triathlon on August 26, in Mr. Sanchos Beach Club. The ocean there has practically no current, the bike portion is done on the highway, as well as the run. The sprint distance, which is 750 mts. swim, 20 k. bike and 5 k run is very easy to accomplish.  You don`t even need a professional bike, a normal one will work, and the feeling of accomplishment is unthinkable.

I used to be a runner, and when I was little a swimmer, but for many years I ran everyday. Then one day a group of people who came every year to Cozumel to do their team training race, decided to have a triathlon in Cozumel, and open some spots for locals.

My friend Lulu who loved to cycle, convinced me to do a relay, we only had to find a swimmer. We asked a friend if he would swim, and he agreed, however, during the race, he got a cramp, because he never trained, and we were the last team to arrive that day, even though my friend and I did our best on the bike and the run. I was so frustrated, but at the same  time very curious about this sport, I am talking about 13 years ago, when it wasn’t such a big thing, and now, having the ironman in Cozumel, has made such a big difference for everyone living here, however, I would never recommend to start with this.

It is never too late to start, in fact, I learned to cycle as an adult, can you imagine?

Triatlón en Mr. Sancho's: Gran oportunidad para principiantes

El día 26 de Agosto, Cozumel tendrá un triatlón en la modalidad sprint en el club de playa Mr. Sancho’s. El mar en esa zona prácticamente no tiene corrientes, el segmento en bicicleta se efectúa en la carretera, así como la carrera. La distancia de la carrera es de 750 mts. de natación, 20 km. en bicicleta y 5 km de carrera, fáciles de lograr. Ni siquiera se necesita bicicleta profesional, una normal es suficiente y el sentimiento del resultado es inconcebible. 

Yo era una corredora y fui nadadora cuando pequeña, pero durante muchos años corría todos los días. Hasta que un día un grupo de personas que anualmente visitaban Cozumel para su entrenamiento en equipo, decidió organizar un triatlón en Cozumel y abrir algunos lugares para los locales.

Mi amiga Lulú, quien amaba andar en bicicleta, me convenció para hacer el relevo, lo único que teníamos que hacer era encontrar a un nadador. Le preguntamos a un amigo si hacía el tramo de natación, y aceptó; sin embargo, durante la carrera le dio un calambre, debido a que nunca antes había entrenado. Ese día fuimos el último equipo en llegar, a pesar de todo el empeño que mi amiga y yo hicimos en la bicicleta y en la carrera. Estaba muy frustrada, pero a la vez muy tenía curiosidad acerca de este deporte; esto sucedió hace 13 años cuando no era la gran cosa. En la actualidad, tener el evento Ironman en Cozumel, ha hecho una gran diferencia para todos los que vivimos aquí, sin embargo nunca recomendaría empezar con esto.

Nunca es tarde para empezar. De hecho, aprendí a andar en bicicleta siendo adulta. ¿Se lo pueden imaginar?

Congratulations to Mexico's Laura Sanchez Soto for Winning a Bronze Medal in Women's Diving

Laura Sanchez Soto has represented her country for three consecutive Olympics, starting in 2004.  This past week, she secured her first Olympic medal, a bronze, in the 3 meter springboard diving competition.  For more information on her, or other Mexican Olympic athletes, check out the official London 2012 webpage.

Durante tres Olimpiadas consecutivas y desde el año 2004, Laura Sánchez Soto ha estado representando a su país.  La semana pasada obtuvo su primera presea Olímpica de bronce en una competencia de trampolín de 3 mts. Fundraiser for Joni Mitchell – Island resident, and active Humane Society volunteer, Joni Mitchell has been undergoing chemotherapy, and incurring huge medical expenses.  To assist someone who has selflessly given so much to the Cozumel community,  friends of hers are organizing a fundraiser for her at the Money Bar Beach Club on  Wednesday, August 22nd,  starting at 6 pm, with FUGGA playing live music.  There will be a silent auction as well, and if you would like to donate something to the auction, please contact Teresa Mentzer at bwycbabe@yahoo.com

Buccano’s por la Noche, una breve pausa por temporada baja – “Buccano’s por la Noche” está tomando un descanso durante la temporada baja siendo nuestra última noche el 1º de Septiembre hasta el fin de semana del Día de Gracias.
