Pullman Tour Completes Cozumel Port Calls for 2015

Last Saturday the “Monach”  completed their last port call into Cozumel for the 2015 Caribbean – Maya  season.   This is the 5th year the company has offered this route, with Cozumel serving as the home port from 2010 – 2012, and Progresso Yucatan for the past 3 years.   Pullmantur’s chartered flights arrive from Europe into the Cancun airport where passengers are transferred to their ship.  When in port in Cozumel, the Pullmantur cruisers dock at Punta Langosta.

Although a 2016  Caribbean Maya season has not been formally announced all factors indicate that it will be very similar to the 2015.

Meteor Showers Peak This Week – Visible from Cozumel

The annual Perseid Meteor Showers are slated to happen this week.  Known to be one of the brightest showers, the Perseid showers tend to feature fast and bright meteors that are visible to the northern hemisphere.  This year, 2015, is expected to be an especially good year, since according to NASA officials, there will be no moonlight to upstage the showers. In theory these are the best viewing conditions since 2010.   Cozumel will be an especially good area for viewing since, due to it’s remote location, ambient light pollution will be at a minimum.  The Perseid Showers derive their name from the constellation Perseus.

Experts say the best time to watch for meteor showers are the pre-dawn hours of August 12 – 15.  The next time there will be a significant meteor shower will be in December when the Geminid Shower arrives.

For more information on the shower, or the best ways to watch them, please click on this CNN link for an informative video.

Dog Friendly Restaurants in Cozumel: A Partial List

     by Betty Li

My husband and I moved to Cozumel one and a half years ago from Toronto Canada.  We came with two dogs:  one of which was a dachshund who had never been left alone for more than an hour. We took her everywhere we went and had a great dog sitter for when we travelled on vacation 4x a year (3 of those 4 where to Cozumel).

Now that we live here and have 3 small dogs it was only natural that we try to take them everywhere we go.  We learned quickly that some restaurants would allow dogs; others no.  The first restaurant we discovered was Jeannie’s (across from Mega Commercial Mexicana ).  We weren’t allowed in the restaurant or balcony area but were allowed down on the sand where the dogs loved to play and dig.

The second restaurant was La Casita de Indio on Salas (between Av 5 y 10) if we sat at a table outside.  I assume any of the places with outside seating would allow this; like Machete or Le Chef.  We also went once to Midori for sushi and they were okay if we sat outside.

Next we discovered we were allowed to bring the 2 dogs at to the Chen Rio Restaurant, where we are now regulars.  The staff there is always friendly and love to see us and our dogs.We have also had luck at The Money Bar but were told “no” at Sky Reef...though I have heard stories from others that they had a different response.

Others where we have had success is at Pachamama on Calle 5, Los Nopales on Ave 30, La Terraza upstairs at the corner of Salas & Ave 5.  We have gone several times to New Especias on Calle 3.  Another favorite is Kelly’s on Ave 10.

One restaurant that I know we are ALWAYS welcomed at is Rock‘n Java on Melgar near Mega Commericial Mexicana Plaza.  The owner Lisa Anne Ramirez is on the Board of Directors of the Humane Society of Cozumel Island (where I volunteer).  We usually go in the evening for dinner or later after our walk for just coffee & desserts and we are always welcomed by Jose and the rest of the staff.

There are other places that people have told us are pet friendly; but we haven’t tried them yet.  They include The Pub, Kinta, Kondesa, Guido’s, El Coctelito, Cafe del Mar, Casa Mission,    Do a search on Cozumel4You and you will find lots of input like....

”Blue Angel is dog friendly, you cannot have your pets in the restaurant due to regulations but you can have full restaurant service in the lobby and garden areas where there are dining tables/chairs.”

“La Cocay is pet friendly; we have a few cats already”

“One more is Primas as long as you sit at one of the tables in the grassy area.”

The culture is changing in Cozumel to become more and more pet friendly and I love that.  We are so lucky that the weather is warm here and we can sit outside at a lot of different places.  This makes the island so much more dog friendly than Canada or the USA.   If you discover a restaurant not mentioned here; please post it on Cozumel4You so we can also try it out.

Betty Li volunteers for the Humane Society of Cozumel Island and has generously volunteered to be our “Pet-Friendly” ambassador and report  back on locations here on island where owners and pets can enjoy together.
