A Hundred Turn Out in Cozumel Streets to Celebrate Mexican Olympic Gold

If there’s one thing that Cozumel islanders have perfected; it’s the celebration.  Just last week when the Mexican Soccer team defeated the Brazilian team for Olympic gold, residents donned their Mexican colors and insignias and took to the streets to rejoice.  The celebrants attracted a lot of attention from passers-by, and soon an informal  cheering squad formed on the downtown malecon.  Several tour busses of cruise ship passengers commemorated the event with photos, and even local merchants got into the spirit, selling red, green and white t-shirts, horn and scarves.

Si hay algo que los cozumeleños han perfeccionado, es la celebración. La semana pasada, cuando el equipo mexicano de fútbol ganó al equipo de Brasil la medalla olímpica de oro, los habitantes se vistieron con los colores e insignias mexicanos y salieron a las calles a festejar. Los celebrantes atrajeron mucha atención de transeúntes, y en poco tiempo se formó un grupo informal de animadores en el malecón. Algunos autobuses de excursiones para los pasajeros de los buques turísticos conmemoraron el evento con fotografías y hasta los vendedores locales se unieron al espíritu vendiendo camisetas rojas, verdes y blancas, así como cornetas y pañuelos.

How I came to Call Cozumel Home: A Series by Island Residents

I was born and raised in the Island; and regardless of being away for seven years, I always returned Home, to Cozumel. I remember the day I came back to the Island with my baby in my arms; from the airplane the beautiful turquoise colors of the sea could be seen. I was pretty anxious. When I came off the plane, the warm temperature reminded me about the uniqueness of its kind people, of the breeze, the tranquility and safety it offers. Right then and there I made the decision that this would be our home. I love Cozumel because it brings beautiful childhood memories. It’s a place where we still coexist with nature; that is how I grew up and that is how I want my son to grow up.

Just last week changes showed up in my life. A friend came up to me and as the conversation developed, I was convinced I had to write my story which is also a story of generosity and greatness of heart of many residents. I have no doubt in my mind; I am proud to live here. Coming by this keyboard and screen moment and closing a cycle in my working life that is how I decide to become a part of this great space. Thank you, Laura.

Motivated by the love for the Island, from January to August 2012 I was in charge of the DIF Cozumel Funds Collection Office. During that time, I found the generosity of the Cozumelenian, North American and Canadian residents, those that come to and leave the Island.

During that time, we carried out several activities, which I wish to mention: we opened a PayPal account to sponsor school children’s breakfasts and had a great response; support was given to the children of Casa Filtro, the most wonderful experience was with Oyuki, a 13 year old girl with cancer, whose leg did not need amputation as through a fundraiser along with the community’s support her medical and travel expenses, amongst others, were covered.

I made very good friends and most importantly, I witnessed that the aid came to those who actually needed it. DIF Cozumel gave me a very pleasant experience, by being the instrument to enable the generosity of those wish to help reach the most vulnerable. I appreciate the confidence placed in me.

Another beautiful project came from a Minnesota family who love the Island and wanted to help its children by donating shoes: Loving Steps, the initiative to provide quality footwear to children in the Island who actually need it that imprinted a “firm” step into the Island’s history.

As I said before, I keep great friends; the Hanson and Carachuri family. So much generosity…anonymous donors; intermediaries such as Laura Wilkinson, Nancy Murray, Madeleine Mason; professionals willing to be of service with their experience and knowledge.

Before DIF I was International Affairs Director; my duties included bringing government authorities and citizens together. Once of the activities I undertook was the Fourth of July celebration along the local North American community, Consul Anne Harris and the Tourism Department. I have always believed that if we are a tourist destination we should generate cost-free leisure activities for locals and tourists, therefore we held this festivity which included fireworks and brought an atmosphere of gratitude towards the Cozumelenian community, its visitors, local authorities and the Mayor.

By being a mom for almost four years I became more responsive to children’s issues, and just as I arrived to the Island, good friends and I got together and created a non-profit organization known as “CREES”. In concert we coordinated “Your hair is love, donate it”, a one-week haircut program to later have wigs made for children with cancer. I believe that through CREES we realized the importance of giving support to children and all of us members learned how to be a great way of helping those who most needed a helping hand.
I was recently invited to be a member of Cozumel Rotary Club, which fills me with pleasure. Rotary influenced my formation as in my youth I was an exchange student and also founder of Cozumel Rotaract Club.

My Little boy and I chose to live in a better place, we live in Cozumel, we are very happy and I consider it the best environment to have a family. We have very good friends, a beautiful family and are thankful for living in paradise.

Once again I ponder: I love Cozumel, I love social work and will continue pursuing it. I am only closing my DIF chapter. I will keep giving my support through community work; so this is also a petition: if you wish to help children, youngsters or others you may contact me and I will make sure it arrives to its destination, always providing proof that the aid reaches the beneficiary. I know the community’s government and non-government agencies as well as our Island’s vulnerable areas, so if you ever wish to lend a hand to visually impaired people, battered women, handicapped children or others contact me and I will be more than glad to help.

I will carry on giving my support to family businesses we started together: TIKILA and PAPRIKA restaurant; you can find me there in the mornings.  

Everything can be accomplished in love. I trust we all have the power to shape up change and giving of ourselves must be a daily routine as a way to be grateful for all the blessings we receive.

Cómo he llegado a considerar a Cozumel como mi hogar. Serie escrita por habitantes de la Isla

Nací y crecí en la Isla, no obstante siete años de estar fuera, siempre regresé al Hogar, a Cozumel. Recuerdo aquel día que regresé a la Isla con mí bebe en brazos y desde el avión vi los bellos colores turquesa del mar, sentí mucha ilusión y al bajar del avión, el calor del clima me recordó la calidez de la gente, la brisa, tranquilidad y la seguridad que ofrece son únicas. En ese momento decidí que sería nuestro hogar.  Amo Cozumel, porque me trae bellos recuerdos de mi infancia, es un lugar en donde aun coexistimos con la naturaleza, así crecí y así deseo que crezca mi hijo.

La semana pasada se presentaron cambios en mi vida, una amiga se acercó y conforme la plática avanzaba me convencí de escribir mi historia que a la vez es la historia de la generosidad y la grandeza del corazón de muchos cozumeleños. No dudo, estoy orgullosa de vivir aquí. Es así como llego a este momento de teclas y pantalla, y que con el cierre de un ciclo en mi vida laboral decido ser parte de este gran espacio. Gracias Laura.

Por el amor a la isla, de Enero a Agosto del 2012, estuve a cargo de la Oficina de Recaudación de Fondos del Sistema DIF Cozumel. Durante este período descubrí la generosidad que existe en la comunidad cozumeleña, americana y canadiense residente en la Isla, aquellos que van y vienen a Cozumel. 

Durante este tiempo realizamos varias actividades y deseo hacer mención de algunas. Abrimos una cuenta PayPal para patrocinar a niños con desayunos escolares y hubo muy buena respuesta, se apoyo a niños de Casa Filtro, la experiencia más hermosa fue descubrir que no era necesario amputarle la pierna a una niña de 13 años, de nombre Oyuki que padecía cáncer y que con el apoyo de la comunidad se realizó un bazar y se cubrieron gastos médicos, viáticos, entre otros.

Hice muy buenas amistades y lo más importante fui testigo de que la ayuda llegó a quienes realmente lo necesitaban. DIF Cozumel, me deja una grata experiencia, ser un medio para que la generosidad de quienes desean apoyar llegue a los más vulnerables. Gracias por la confianza que depositaron en mi persona.

Otro proyecto hermoso fue la iniciativa de una familia de Minnesota que ama la Isla y deseaba ayudar a sus niños a través de donaciones de zapatos: LovingSteps, iniciativa de llevar calzado de calidad a niños de la Isla que realmente lo necesiten, marco un paso “firme” en la historia de la isla.

Como dije, me quedo con grandes amigos; la familia Hanson y Carachuri. Tanta  generosidad, donadores anónimos; intermediarios como Laura Wilkinson, Nancy Murray, Madeleine Mason. Profesionistas con deseos de aportar servicios a través de su experiencia y conocimiento.

Previo a DIF, fui Directora de Asuntos Internacionales entre mis funciones se encontraba el generar acercamiento entre autoridades gubernamentales, y los ciudadanos; una actividad que lleve a cabo fue el festejo del cuatro de Julio en conjunto con personas americanas de la comunidad local, la Cónsul Anne Harris y la Dirección de Turismo. Siempre he creído que sí somos un lugar turístico debemos generar ofertas gratuitas de entretenimiento al local y al turista por ello, realizamos este festejo que incluyo fuegos pirotécnicos y que trajo un ambiente de agradecimiento hacia la comunidad Cozumeleña, sus visitantes, las autoridades locales y el Presidente Municipal.

El ser madre hace casi cuatro años, me sensibilizó más con el tema infantil, y llegando a la Isla me reuní con muy buenos amigos, creamos una A.C. denominada “CREES”, con ellos coordiné “Tú cabello es amor, dónalo” programa que duró una semana de corte de cabello para posteriormente mandar hacer pelucas para niños con cáncer. A través de CREES, creo que nos dimos cuenta de la importancia de apoyar a la niñez y creo que todos los miembros aprendimos a ser un medio de ayuda para aquellos que mas necesitaban una mano amiga.

Recientemente me invitaron a ser socia del Club Rotario de Cozumel, hecho que me llena de satisfacción, Rotary  influyó en mi formación, al ser estudiante de intercambio en mi adolescencia y Fundadora del Club Rotaract Cozumel.

Mi pequeño y yo elegimos vivir en el mejor lugar, vivimos en Cozumel, somos muy felices y creo que es el ambiente perfecto para tener una familia; tenemos muy buenos amigos, una hermosa familia y nos encontramos agradecidos por poder vivir en el paraíso.
Y una vez más pienso, amo Cozumel, amo el trabajo social y voy a seguir en esto, solo cierro mi etapa DIF. Continuaré apoyando en trabajo comunitario, así que este es un llamado también, si deseas ayudar a niños, jóvenes o u otros, me pueden contactar yo puedo ser un medio para que la ayuda llegue, siempre dando pruebas de que el fin llegue al beneficiado. Conozco los órganos gubernamentales y no gubernamentales de la comunidad, y ubico las zonas vulnerables de nuestra  isla por ello sí en algún momento deseas apoyar, invidentes, mujeres que han sufrido, niños con capacidades diferentes u otros. Contáctame y estaré encantada de poder apoyar.

Continuaré apoyando en los negocios familiares que emprendimos juntos: Restaurante TIKILA y PAPRIKA , ahí me pueden encontrar por las mañanas.

En el amor todo se puede. Creo que todos tenemos el poder de ser generadores de cambio, y dar de nosotros debe ser parte de nuestra rutina diaria como una manera de agradecer las tantas bendiciones que recibimos.

Cozumel Turtle Season 2012: Update

This week we marked the 3,420th nest. We're still releasing turtle babies on the eastern side of the island, and gearing up for peak nesting season! We're expecting to mark approximately 100 nests a day, just to give you an idea of how busy we'll be!

I'm sure some of you have heard about the Hurricane Ernesto and the possible effects the storm surge can have on the turtle conservation program. I'll be honest the damage was big. A number of nests are gone. I can't guess the number because we're still studying the area. One thing I know about nature for sure, is that it's unpredictable. It's a natural disaster, just like many others that sea turtles have confronted before. In the 3 years I've been part of this program I have met a lot of people, many of whom are really interested in the turtles and even about the island in general. Some of them even befriend not only me, but the turtle crew. Because of your thoughts, good wishes and help, I wish to thank you. Seriously, this program would be a lot different without your support. I know that some of you are sad about the number of baby turtles lost. Many lives been cut so soon. Even before they could begin roaming this world. It's heartbreaking at the very least. But as the turtles do, we have to endure. They've survived extinctions and catastrophes long before humans appeared. And today I witnessed the miracle of nature. We registered 53 new nests, the day after the storm was gone. 53 new hopes, 5, 300 new lives that hopefully will hatch and will see the sea. When I was a kid I learned a description of the wild life and nature which is well used here "Nature, cruel and beautiful at the same time". Today we released one of those nests that survived. 119 babies running safely to the now calm sea.

Turtle Trivia: Did you know that there are 7 species of sea turtles? The names are Green Sea Turtle (Chelonia mydas) Loggerhead (Caretta caretta) Hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricata) Kemp's Rydley (Lepidochelys kempii) Olive Ridley (Lepidochelys olivacea) Flatback sea turtle (Natator depressus) and Leatherback sea turtle (Dermochelys coriacea)

Cozumel's turtle program is sponsored by the Cozumel Dept of Ecology, which is headed by Biol. Rafael Chacon T-Shirts and information available at the Department of Ecology Av. 65 and 11 street. Staff will be in the office from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm Weekdays. Temporada de la Tortuga 2012 en Cozumel: Actualización

Esta semana marcamos el nido 3,420. Aún estamos liberando tortuguitas en la costa oriental de la Isla y preparándonos para la temporada pico de anidación. Sólo para darles una idea de lo ocupados que vamos a estar, ¡esperamos marcar alrededor 100 nidos diariamente!

Estoy seguro que algunos de ustedes han oído hablar del huracán Ernesto y de los posibles efectos que el oleaje pudiera tener en el programa de conservación de las tortugas. Seré honesto, el daño fue grande. Desapareció una gran cantidad de nidos. No puedo adivinar el número porque aún estamos estudiando el área. Una cosa sobre la naturaleza de la que estoy seguro es que es impredecible. Es un desastre natural, al igual que muchos otros que han tenido que enfrentar las tortugas marinas. Durante los 3 años que he sido parte de este programa he conocido a muchas personas, muchas de las cuales están verdaderamente interesadas en las tortugas e incluso acerca de la Isla en general. Algunos no sólo han hecho amistad conmigo sino también con el equipo que atiende lo de las tortugas. Deseo agradecerles sus propósitos, sus buenos deseos y su ayuda. Sin su apoyo ciertamente este programa sería muy diferente. Sé que algunos de ustedes están tristes por el número de crías perdidas. Muchas vidas han sido interrumpidas demasiado pronto. Aún antes de que pudieran comenzar deambular por este mundo. Lo menos que se puede decir es que es sumamente triste. Pero al igual que las tortugas, debemos sobrellevarlo. Han sobrevivido extinciones y catástrofes mucho antes que aparecieran los humanos, y hoy fui testigo del milagro de la naturaleza. Registramos 53 nidos nuevos el día después de la tormenta. Son 53 nuevas esperanzas, 5,300 vidas nuevas que saldrán del cascarón y verán el mar. Cuando yo era niño aprendí una definición sobre la vida salvaje y la naturaleza que bien se puede aplicar aquí: “La naturaleza, cruel y bella a la vez”. Hoy liberamos uno de esos nidos que sobrevivieron: 119 bebés corriendo a salvo hacia la mar ahora en calma.

Trivia Tortuga: ¿Sabía que existen 7 especies de tortugas marinas? Los nombres son: tortuga verde (Chelonia mydas), Caguama (Caretta caretta), Carey (Eretmochelys imbricata), tortuga lora (Lepidochelys kempii), golfina (Lepidochelys olivacea), tortuga plana (Natator depressus) y tortuga laúd o baula (Dermochelys coriacea)

El programa de las tortugas en Cozumel es patrocinado por la Dirección de Ecología, a cargo del Biólogo Rafael Chacón. Las camisetas e información están disponibles en la Dirección de Ecología, en Ave. 65 con Calle 11. Humane Society Pets of the Week

Snappy aka Joe a very sweet male Chihuahua, approximately 9 years old, hard to tell because this poor boy does not have one single tooth left in his head. He was found wandering downtown, skinny and tick infested. He has tested positive for heart worm. It was a very difficult decision what to do with Snapy, but we would like to try and pull this boy through due to his amazing disposition, very friendly and sweet. And he has learned over the years how to eat dry food even with no teeth! Although he loves having his food soaked, just makes it that much easier for him. He is too delicate to be at the Humane Society while he receives heart worm treatment and we are very thankful to Sarah and Tommy for fostering this sweet boy. He needs a place to call his own, please contact us if you are interested in Snappy (aka Joe!)

Meet our latest sweet mom!!! Cristal was a street cat that a kind lady that is clinically blind liked very much. She fed the cat and allowed her into the one small room house to visit. Cristal had two little orange babies. Unfortunately the granddaughter of the lady, just a toddler accidentally stepped on one of the one week old kittens, it was beyond hope and had to be humanely euthanized. The situation was just not ideal for all involved, so Cristal and her one remaining baby were left to the care of the shelter. Barely 36 hours after her arrival, 3 one week old kittens were brought, and surprisingly all orange, just like Cristal and her surviving baby! The only hope  of survival for these new arrivals was for a mother cat to adopt them. Our amazing kennel staff that know just how to show a mother cat orphaned babies gave it a try. Cristal immediately took them under her wing. They went into foster care over the threat of a hurricane with Suzanne and Gary and we are very grateful! They have agreed to foster until the babies are weaned. Mom and kittens are doing great and her kittens will be ready for adoption in about 6 weeks. Cristal also needs a place to call home.

Las Mascotas de la Semana de la Sociedad Humanitaria

Snapy, también conocido como Joe, es un Chihuahua macho muy cariñoso, de aproximadamente 9 años de edad, aunque es difícil saberlo ya que a este pobre no le queda ni un solo diente. Se le encontró vagando por el centro de la ciudad, flaco e infestado de garrapatas. Su prueba para el gusano del corazón salió positiva. La decisión de acerca de qué hacer con Snapy era muy difícil, pero nos gustaría tratar y sacar adelante a ese muchacho debido a su asombrosa disposición, muy dulce y amigable. A lo largo de los años ha aprendido cómo comer su alimento seco, ¡aún sin tener dientes! Aunque le encanta tener sus alimentos remojados, ya que comer se le facilita más. Su salud es muy delicada para permanecer en la Sociedad Humanitaria en lo que recibe su tratamiento para el gusano del corazón, por lo que estamos muy agradecidos que Sarah y Tommy acojan a este dulce muchacho. Snapy necesita un lugar que pueda considerar como propio. Por favor contáctenos si le interesan Snapy (¡también conocido como Joe!)

¡Conozcan a nuestra dulce y más reciente mamá! Cristal era una gata callejera la cual le gustaba mucho a una bondadosa señora, clínicamente invidente. La señora la alimentaba y le permitía que la visitara en su casa de una habitación. Cristal tuvo dos pequeños de color naranja. Desafortunadamente la nieta de la señora, una pequeñita, por accidente pisó uno de los gatitos y, como ya no tenía remedio, fue necesario sacrificarlo. La situación no era ideal para todos los interesados, así que Cristal y su otro bebé fueron dejados a cargo del refugio. A casi 36 horas de su llegada al refugio, trajeron 3 gatitos de sólo una semana de nacidos y, sorprendentemente, todos eran de color naranja, ¡iguales a Cristal y su bebé sobreviviente!  La única esperanza que los recién llegados tenían para sobrevivir, era que una madre gata los adoptara. Nuestro maravilloso personal en el refugio sabía cómo enseñar a que una madre hiciera el intento de adoptar a los bebés huérfanos. De inmediato Cristal los acogió. Durante la amenaza de huracán estuvieron bajo el cuidado de Suzanne y Gary. ¡Les estamos muy agradecidos! Ellos han aceptado cuidar de ellos hasta que sean destetados. La mamá y los gatitos están muy bien, y en unas 6 semanas estarán listos para a adopción. Cristal también necesita un lugar que pueda llamar hogar.
¡Gracias a todos los que adoptan, eso hace un mundo de diferencia a un animal sin hogar!

Trashy Little Group & Sweet Travel to Team up for Beach Collection

The Sweet travel group,  a socially and environmentally aware lesbian travel company, aims to make the world a better place while having a great time.  Members of the Sweet group participate in “voluntourism,” meaning it’s their goal to do charitable works where they are in an effort to counteract the carbon footprint of their travel, and help out the local community where they vacation.   This year, during their annual September trip, which is their third on the island, Sweet will be teaming up with the Trashy Little Group, and doing some beach cleanup during their stay.    The 2012 goal for the Trashy Little Group was 1,000 bags of garbage, and currently, their bag counter stands at 503.  With 300 sweet voluntourists arriving, this is bound to be a super trashy event. 

The September Trashy Little Event is scheduled for Wednesday, September 5th,to clean the beach area south along Melgar starting from the Blue Angel Hotel at 9 am, and continuing south towards the Park Royal Hotel. There will be great prizes, sodas while they last, and lots of fun. Come out and join the effort! We will be meeting on Wednesday, September 5th, 9 am by the Blue Angel Hotel. Se unen los grupos Trashy Little Group y Sweet Travel para la limpieza de playas

El grupo Sweet Travel, una agencia de viajes para lesbianas también dedicada a la sensibilización social y medioambiental, tiene como objetivo hacer del mundo un lugar mejor mientras se divierten. Los miembros del grupo Sweet participan en el “volunturismo”, lo que significa que su meta el realizar obras de caridad donde se encuentran, en un esfuerzo para contrarrestar la huella de carbono que generan por sus viajes y brindar ayuda a la comunidad local donde pasan sus vacaciones. Este año, durante su viaje anual de Septiembre, que es el tercero a la Isla, Sweet se unirá con el grupo Trashy Little, y durante su estancia limpiarán la playa. La meta para el año 2012 del grupo Trashy Little era lograr reunir 1,000 bolsas de basura y, a la fecha, su conteo de bolsas está en 503. Con 300 volunturistas apenas llegando, esto se encamina a ser un evento súper “trashy”.

El evento de septiembre de Trashy Little está programado para el miércoles 5 de septiembre en el que se pretende limpiar el área de playa del sur a lo largo de la Avenida Melgar, comenzando desde el Blue Angel Hotel , a partir de las 9 a.m. y continuando hacia el sur al Hotel Park Royal. Habrá excelentes premios, refrescos, hasta que se agoten, y mucha diversión. ¡Vengan y únanse al esfuerzo! Nos reuniremos el miércoles 5 de septiembre a las 9 a.m. en el Hotel Blue Angel. Certified Yucateco Chile Habanero

It is amazing to see how genetic technology is being used to protect the quality of seed genetics around the world, and Yucatan’s Chile Habanero are no exception. Yucatan recently submitted eight different varieties of  Chile Habanero grown here and six have been accepted to appear in the national Catalog of Plant varieties. All six received certification through the National Seed Inspection and Certification Service. The certainty of brand and quality result in a marriage between agricultural technology and industry that is worth millions to the state each year. There were a dozen companies waiting to come to Yucatan if they can be sure of working with certified seeds. It looks as if Yucatan’s Chile Habanero industry just took one giant leap forward! The next step is getting the Science and Technology Park fully functioning and the sky will be the only limit in more than a few industries in Yucatan

Es sorprendente ver cómo la tecnología genética se utiliza para proteger la calidad genética de  las semillas en el mundo, y el chile habanero de Yucatán no es una excepción. En fechas recientes Yucatán presentó ocho variedades diferentes de chile habanero cultivado aquí de las cuales seis han sido aceptadas y serán incluidas en el Catálogo Nacional de Variedades de Plantas. Las seis variedades recibieron la certificación del Servicio Nacional de Inspección y Certificación de Semillas (SNICS). El reconocimiento de marca y calidad resultan en un matrimonio entre la tecnología agrícola y la industria que anualmente vale millones al Estado. Hubo una docena de compañías que esperaban venir a Yucatán, si tienen la certeza de trabajar con semillas certificadas. ¡Tal parece que la industria del chile habanero en Yucatán acaba de dar un gran salto hacia adelante! El siguiente paso es hacer que el Parque de Ciencias y Tecnología opere en su totalidad y  sólo el cielo será el límite para más de solo algunas industrias en Yucatán.

Fundraiser for Joni Mitchell – Island resident, and active Humane Society volunteer, Joni Mitchell has been undergoing chemotherapy, and incurring huge medical expenses.  To assist someone who has selflessly given so much to the Cozumel community,  friends of hers are organizing a fundraiser for her at the Money Bar Beach Club on  Wednesday, August 22nd,  starting at 6 pm, with FUGGA playing live music.  There will be a silent auction as well, and if you would like to donate something to the auction, please contact Teresa Mentzer at bwycbabe@yahoo.com
