Results of the Cozumel Ironman 2010

Congratulations to Cozumel Ironman winners Andy Potts, from the United States, who came in first in the Men’s division and Yvonne Van Vierken, from Holland, who came in first in the Women’s division.  The Cozumel Ironman is the last North American Ironman event for the year, and over 2,300 athletes from over 50 different countries participated.  Due to the flat topography, Cozumel is considered an ideal location for such an event.  The Ironman consists of three parts: a 3.8 km swim, which takes place at Chankanaab National Park, a 180 km bike ride, which laps around the island, and a 42.2 km run around the island.  Several new records were set during this event.  Andy Potts completed the event in a new course record time of 8:16;14  Kimberly Schwabenbauer from the United States, considered a non-professional athlete,  completed the course in only 10:04:15, earning her 6th place amongst  other professional athletes.

Felicidades  desde Cozumel a los Ironman ganadores Andy Potts, de los Estados Unidos, que llegó en primer lugar en la División de los hombres y Yvonne Van Vierken, de Holanda, que llegó en primer lugar en la División de la mujer. El Ironman Cozumel es el último evento de Ironman de América del Norte para este año, y participaron más de 2.300 atletas de más de 50 países diferentes. Debido a la topografía plana, Cozumel es considerado un lugar ideal para este tipo de eventos. El Ironman consta de tres partes: natación de 3,8 km, que se hizo en el Parque Nacional Chankanaab, un paseo de bicicleta de 180 km, alrededor de tres vueltas a la isla y  una corrida de  42,2 km alrededor del malecón de  la isla. Varios nuevos registros se establecieron durante este evento. Andy Potts completó el evento en un tiempo récord de nuevo curso de 8hrs: 16mnts; 14sec Kimberly Schwabenbauer de los Estados Unidos, considerada un atleta no profesional, completo el recorrido en sólo 10hrs: 04mnts: 15sec, ganando el sexto lugar de entre los atletas profesionales.

Cozumel's Own Ironman 2010 Athletes

Cozumel couldn't be prouder of their very own Ironman Athletes.  Downtown streets were filled with residents cheering on their own.  Amongst those who competed in this year’s Ironman event, who are from the island were, Jaime Mezo, Tony Anschutz, Martha Vazquez, Dailene Erickson, Eduardo Garcia, Mostro Puk, Adolfo Castillo,  and Scott Wilson.  These amazing athletes finished with times  from 11:52 to 15:38  Several of these athletes kept residents updated with their training progress throughout the year, which made for very emotional finishes for not only the athletes but their fans as well.  Congratulations to all!

Cozumel no podía estar  más orgulloso de sus propios atletas del Ironman. En el centro de la ciudad las calles estaban llenos de vecinos y residentes apoyando a estos Ironman. Entre los que compitieron en el Ironman de este año fueron y que viven en la isla, Jaime Mezo, Tony Anschutz, Martha Vazquez, Dailene Erickson, Eduardo García, Mostro Puk, Adolfo Castillo y Scott Wilson. Estos increíbles atletas terminaron con tiempos de 11hrs: 52mnts  a 15hrs: 38mnts, varios de estos atletas mantuvieron informando a los residentes de sus progresos de formación durante todo el año, que al final acabaron muy emocionados no sólo los atletas sino también sus fanáticos. Felicidades a todos!

Volunteering for the Cruz Roja at the Ironman - by Henri Clarke

I had the best vantage point ever at the Ironman race on Sunday! Whoever guessed that by volunteering for the Cruz Roja I would be able to meet and chat with a large number of the participants as they arrived at the finish line! I had heard that Cruz Roja was looking for people to help behind the lines in their recovery and medical facilities. Volunteers who were the most needed were nurses to help in the medical tent and massage therapists for the recovery area. Since I don’t have any background in those areas, I ended up on the triage line. I don’t have any medical background, but I thought, it must be just common sense, so I’ll give it my best effort.

As it turned out, there were EMT’s at the finish line to have a few words with the contestants and make a decision as to whether they were okay or may be in need of medical attention. Those who needed medical attention were helped to the medical tent by the EMT’s and the rest were passed on to the triage volunteers. By and large most of the contestants were feeling fine and only in need of a bit of direction to help them get to the recovery room where they could rest, get food and even a massage from some very busy volunteers manning those areas. Some needed someone to lean on or to get some special requests on their way to the recovery area.

It was such a unique opportunity to meet and congratulate the contestants first hand I couldn’t believe my good luck. I’m certainly looking forward to volunteering for the next Ironman race and I recommend anyone who has extra time and energy do the same!

He tenido la mejor posición  en la carrera de Ironman el domingo! Quien lo diría  que  voluntarios de la Cruz Roja podrián reunirse y conversar con un gran número de los participantes, después de la línea de meta! Había oído que la Cruz Roja estaba buscando gente para ayudar detrás de las líneas en su recuperación y servicios médicos. Los Voluntarios que más se necesitaron eran enfermeras para ayudar en la carpa  médica y terapeutas para el área de recuperación de masaje. Ya no estuve en  ninguna de esas zonas, pero estaba en la línea de clasificación. De donde también se necesitaba ayuda, pero pensé, debe ser igual para todos, por lo que daré mi mejor esfuerzo  para el buen resultado del grupo de voluntarios.

Tal como estaba planeado, hubo paramédicos en la línea de meta con la cual con unas preguntas a los concursantes se  tomaba una decisión si necesitaban atención medica o tan solo necesitaban descansar. Quienes necesitan atención médica se les atendía en la carpa de médica con la ayuda de los paramédicos y el resto fueron transmitidos a las áreas de recuperación. Por lo general la mayoría de los concursantes fueron auxiliados para ayudarles a llegar al área recuperación de donde podía descansar, obtener alimentos e incluso un masaje por algunos de los voluntarios. Algunos necesitaron de alguien que los acompañara hasta las diferentes aéreas, a lo largo de su camino hacia la zona de recuperación.

Es una oportunidad para conocer y felicitar de primera mano a los concursantes no podía creer en mi buena suerte. Sin duda estoy ansioso de ser voluntario para la próxima carrera del Ironman y reclutar  a cualquiera persona interesada que tenga tiempo y energía para ayudar para el próximo evento!

Humane Society "Pets of the Week" Lupita & The Foster 4 - by Monica Velasco

When Lupita first came to the shelter she had very bad mange and scratched frantically, so her skin was covered in sores and scabs. However, where she did have hair it was -and still is- amazingly soft and silky. A month of veterinary care and lots of petting has made a big difference for Lupita. Her skin is now healed, still pink in some places but smooth and with new hair showing. She is now a beautiful dog, although her nicest quality is her sweetness. She is a very affectionate pup who loves people and petting. She is small and will remain small, and will be a perfect lap dog.

Cuando llegó al refugio, Lupita tenía mucha sarna y se rascaba tanto que estaba llena de llagas y costras. Sin embargo, en el resto del cuerpo su pelo era -y todavía es- muuuy sedoso! Después de un mes de cuidados y apapachos, la piel de Lupita ya se curó. En algunas partes todavía falta pelo, pero la piel ya está sana y se empieza a cubrir con pelo nuevo. Ahora ya es una cachorra muy hermosa, aunque su mayor cualidad es su caracter tan dulce. Es una perrita muy cariñosa a la que le encanta la gente y las caricias. Es de talla pequeña y así se quedará, por lo tanto será una excelente perrita para alguien que busque una compañerita en la casa.

The Foster 4 - Meet Tomasa, Tigre, Bandida and Panda. Four kittens who are in perfect health, very social, de-wormed, sterilized and vaccinated, and also potty-trained! They have been fostered so they are used to lots of love and attention, and they love to hang out together. are just at that age that you don’t need more entertainment than watching them play. That side-running with arched back is adorable.

La Cuadrilla de gatitos - Les presentamos a Tomasa, Tigre, Bandiday Panda. Cuatro hermanitos muy saludables, sociables, esterilizados, desparasitados y vacunados, y para rematar también están entrenados a usar su arenero. Han estado viviendo en una casa puente así que están muy acostumbrados a tener mucha atención y cariño. Están en esa edad en la que uno se divierte de solo verlos jugar. Esas carreras de ladito y brinquitos con con la espalda arqueada son de lo más simpático.

Hurricane Season Offically Over

November 30th marked the official end of the 2010 Hurricane season.  During this year’s season two tropical depressions, seven tropical storms and 12 hurricanes occurred and although none of them affected Cozumel, many other areas such as Guatemala, Oaxaca, Chiapas, Tabasco and Veracruz were affected either by hurricanes or serious flooding resulting from storm activity.

El 30 de noviembre marcó el final oficial de la temporada de huracanes del 2010. Durante la temporada de este año se produjeron dos depresiones tropicales, siete tormentas tropicales y 12 huracanes y a pesar de que ninguno de ellos no afecto a Cozumel, pero si a otros países y  muchas áreas del país, como Guatemala, Oaxaca, Chiapas, Tabasco y Veracruz que fueron bien afectados por los huracanes y provocando graves inundaciones como resultado  de las tormenta tropicales.

Rock N Java Angel Tree –This year, Rock N Java has put up an “Angel Tree” which directly benefits the residents of the La Esperanza Shelter.  Each resident has written some basic items that they need on an angel.  You can either donate the items directly under the Angel tree or leave monetary donations so that the volunteers can purchase the items for the residents.  For more information, contact Lisa at Rock N Java.
