Cozumel’s Angeles Verdes, or Green Angels Helping Motorists in Need

The Angeles Verdes, or Green Angels as they are known in English, have been hard at work this holiday season assisting motorists in need.  Their services, which are available free-of-charge to both tourists and locals alike, help rescue people experiencing a problem with their vehicles.  Fernando Valencia Yeh, who is in charge of the Cozumel division of the Angeles Verdes was recently quoted as saying that during this time of year, they often work from sunrise to sunset, helping a significant number of people, mostly on the windward side of the island.  The Cozumel corps currently operate 2 vehicles, that primarily cover the island’s perimeter roads.   The most common problem they encounter is flat or punctured tires.  Members of the Angeles Verdes have “basic knowledge” and can provide both gasoline or air.  Their services are covered under the budget of the Federal Secretary of Tourism, as well as additional support from municipal authorities.

Durante esta época de fiestas decembrinas, los Ángeles Verdes han estado bastante ocupados auxiliando a los automovilistas. Los Ángeles Verdes, cuyos servicios no tienen costo tanto para las personas de nacionalidad extranjera como para los habitantes de la Isla, se dedican a auxiliar a las personas cuyos vehículos presentan algún problema. Fernando Valencia Yeh, quien se encuentra a cargo de la división Cozumel de los Ángeles Verdes, hace poco fue citado diciendo que durante esta época del año generalmente laboran desde el amanecer hasta el atardecer, brindando apoyo a una cantidad importante de personas por lo general en el extremo oriental de la Isla. El cuerpo de socorro automovilístico de Cozumel actualmente opera 2 vehículos que e gran medida cubren los caminos perimetrales de la Isla. El problema que encuentran con más frecuencia es el de neumáticos ponchados o desinflados.  Los miembros de Ángeles Verdes tienen los “conocimientos básicos” y pueden proporcionar tanto gasolina como aire a los neumáticos. Estos servicios son cubiertos a través del presupuesto federal de la Secretaría de Turismo y también se cuenta con el apoyo adicional de las autoridades municipales. 

Cruz Roja Seeking Fun-Loving Volunteers

The volunteer Airport Group of Cruz Roja is seeking some fun-loving volunteers to spend three hours once a week at the Cozumel Airport asking for donations for the 2015 Cruz Roja fundraising goal - finishing and furnishing a Diabetes Medical Center.  The structure is under construction on the Cruz Roja Clinic property on Ave. 65 and the specialized equipment to treat diabetes patients to help prevent gangrene and amputations has already been donated. Cozumel has over 3,000 diabetes patients who desperately need this service.

By joining The Airport Group, you may choose which day of the week you would be willing to volunteer three hours in the airport's departure lounge.  Because a special permit is required to allow you to be in the departure lounge, we would ask that you be willing to volunteer a minimum of six weeks but preferably 10 weeks.  We will assist you in obtaining the permit, of course. That usually takes a week or so before you can start.   

Kindly contact Sandy at rickandsandytimmons@yahoo.com immediately if you would like to volunteer as we will set up a group session to obtain the permits hopefully by the middle of January.  However, if you would be arriving later in CZM for the winter and would like to volunteer for February and March, that would also be very much appreciated.  Just let us know when you will be arriving.

El hospital CostaMed inaugura una nueva ala del hospital y servicios de diagnóstico

El grupo de voluntarios de Cruz Roja que se ubica en el aeropuerto quiere encontrar algunos voluntario alegres que un día a la semana, durante un lapso de tres horas, puedan permanecer en el aeropuerto de Cozumel solicitando donaciones para lograr la meta de recaudación 2015 de Cruz Roja para concluir y vestir el Centro Médico para la Prevención y Tratamiento de Diabetes. La estructura se encuentra en construcción en el inmueble que ocupa la Clínica de la Cruz Roja en la 65 avenida y ya ha sido donado el equipo especializado para el  tratamiento de prevención de gangrena y amputaciones en pacientes con diabetes. En Cozumel hay más de 3,000 personas que padecen diabetes, quienes requieren este servicio de manera urgente.

Al unirse al Grupo del Aeropuerto pueden elegir el día de la semana les sea posible apoyar de manera voluntaria en la sala de salidas del aeropuerto. Ya que se requiere un permiso especial para tener acceso a dicha área, les solicitamos que presten sus servicios como voluntarios al menos seis semanas, pero lo ideal son 10. Claro está que les ayudaremos a obtener ese permiso. Por lo general, obtener el permiso demora alrededor de una semana antes de que puedan comenzar.

Sólo déjennos saber cuándo llegarán.

How to Recycle Your Christmas Tree in Cozumel

For the past several years, public response to the Municipal Ecology Department’s annual Christmas tree recycling program has been very positive.  Pine trees, which are most commonly used to celebrate Christmas, take years to decompose and should not be tossed into vacant lots or placed outside with household garbage.  Last year, over 100 trees were dropped off at the offices of Ecology, located at the Cenote Park, on Avenida 65 between Calle 31 y 33.   It’s not too late to add your tree to this year’s recycle collection.  Donations are accepted between the hours of 7 AM – 4 PM.

Cómo reciclar su árbol de Navidad en Cozumel

Desde hace ya varios años, ha sido muy positiva la respuesta del público al programa de reciclaje de árboles navideños de la Dirección Municipal de Ecología. Los pinos, que son los árboles que por lo general se utilizan para celebrar la Navidad, tardan muchos años en degradarse y no se deben arrojar en lotes baldíos ni juntar con los deshechos de casa. El año pasado la gente dejó más de 100 en las oficinas de Ecología que se ubican en Parque del Cenote sobre la 65 avenida entre cales  31 y 33.  Aún hay tiempo para que incluya su árbol en la colecta para reciclaje. Se aceptan donaciones entre las 7:00 a.m. y 4:00 p.m.

Humane Society Pets of the Week

Fido, male 5 months old, weight 9.1 kg. Poor Fido, he was adopted but the family brought him back as they left a 3 year old girl unsupervised to play with him and she got in his face and he nipped her. So the family claims he does not like children. No amount of speaking to them about responsible pet ownership seemed to sink in. So this short legged little fox is back with us and up for adoption. He can be scared a little bit of new people, but warms up once he knows them.  Fido loves play with balls and take a long hike. 

Janice, female 1 year  old. Adopted from us when she was a kitten. Her family just one day decided they did not want her anymore and dumped her back at the shelter. So sad for cats when this happens! They did not even bring her vaccine record back with her. She is a highly affectionate loving cat and we hope her second chance comes a long soon!  She is so sweet and she  loves play with feathers!

Las Mascotas de la Semana de la Sociedad Humanitaria

Fido, macho 5 meses de edad, peso 9.1 kilogramos. Este enano fue mal juzgado por su adoptantes, una niña sin supervisión ajena a su familia trato de jugar con el y el la rasguño, por más que se trato de explicar que la responsabilidad del humano es educar a los perros y enseñar a los niños a respetar a los animales no conseguimos nada, el nuevamente esta en adopción para quien de verdad pueda tenerlo y darle un buen hogar para siempre. A Fido le gustan las pelotas y salir a pasear.

Janice, hembra de 1 año de edad. La adoptaron cuando era una gatita pequeña. Su familia decidió que no la quería mas y la abandonaron en el refugio. Es muy triste que pase esto, ni si quiera trajeron su record de vacunas. Es muy cariñosa y esperamos que pronto encuentre un Hogar responsable que la quiera, a Janice le encanta jugar con plumitas,es muy cariñosa.

Estos y muchos animalitos mas te esperan en el refugio, recuerda visitarnos para conocerlos, uno nunca sabe, podrías encontrar a un compañero muy especial. Para obtener más información póngase en contacto con pets@humanecozumel.org.

La fiesta navideña de la Sociedad Humanitaria de Cozumel, todo un éxito 

En tanto el año 2014 llega a su final, la Sociedad Humanitaria de la Isla de Cozumel desea agradecer a todos aquellos que colaboraron con donativos para la Fiesta Benéfica de Fin de Año que se celebró en el restaurante Pub. También damos las gracias a todos los amigos y comercios locales que nos brindaron su apoyo en el transcurso del año. Compartiendo nuestras noticias y creando conciencia acerca de nuestra causa. The Lobster Shack Soft Opens in Cozumel

Cozumel foodies, here’s your chance to get a jump on a great new restaurant:  The Lobster Shack.  Owned by Daniel Burgos, of Kinta/Kondesa fame, the concept is simple and easy.  Lobster, shrimp and arrachera with slaw and chips. The venue has AC and Wi-fi and in the future will offer both alcohol and outdoor seating.   Best of all they offer either a 15% local discount or free delivery with Room Service.    While the official grand opening won’t happen until the middle of January, this is a great time to get a jump start on what will for sure be an important part of the Cozumel restaurant venues.  For more information, or to check out their menu, please "like" them on facebook.

El restaurante Lobster Shack abre sus puertas en Cozumel

Los amantes de la buena comida en Cozumel ahora tienen la oportunidad de disfrutar un nuevo restaurante: el Lobster Shack. Propiedad de Daniel Burgos, conocido por Kinta/Kondesa, el concepto es sencillo y relajado: langosta, camarones, y arrachera con col y papas fritas. El lugar cuenta con aire acondicionado, WiFi y en el futuro ofreceremos tanto bebidas alcohólicas como mesas exteriores. Lo mejor de todo es que ofrecen 15% de descuento local o entrega gratuita a través de Room Service. En tanto que la gran inauguración no será sino hasta mediados del mes de enero, este es un buen momento para comenzar en un sitio que seguramente será importante entre los restaurantes de Cozumel. January 6: Three Kings Day

In Mexico celebrations continue twelve days twelve days after Christmastime, January 6, with the arrival of the Three Kings and extend until February 2 with the Día de la Candelaria, Candlemass Day. Upon the Catholic faith instilled by the Spanish missionaries, the celebration of this day has taken place in many Spanish speaking countries since the nineteenth century, coinciding with a Catholic holiday, the day of Epiphany. The story tells that these wise men had an epiphany and traveled to Israel seeking the King of Kings who had just been born. Being guided by star that stood over the manger where baby Jesus was born, the magi presented gifts to the child: gold, incense and myrrh. Long before Santa Claus arrived to Mexico, the three wise men, kings from Persia or magi brought gifts to children which consisted of honey, dry fruits, clothes or shoes, and to the naughty ones, charcoal. In our times, sadly this longstanding tradition is slowly disappearing as Santa Claus has taken precedence; however, there are still many places in Mexico that hold on and where children await anxiously for the arrival of Melchior, Caspar and Balthazar, the Three Kings or Magi. On the evening of January 5 next to the figurines of the Magi in the nativity scene, children leave a letter addressed to the Magi with a list of the toys they want most and deserve for their good behavior on the previous year. The letter is placed inside one shoe and left besides water, hay and food for the animals that have brought the Kings animals as they have traveled a long way; and for the Kings, cookies and milk. Children joyously open their presents on January 6 and, surprised, find that the water, milk, hay and food have disappeared or are half eaten.

To commemorate this date, in France during the Middle Ages families gathered to enjoy a round bread, sprinkled with sugar and crystallized fruit; hidden inside the bread, a lima bean which symbolized a secure place away from king Herod where Jesus could be born. This practice arrived to Mexico during first years of colonial times and has remained a traditional gathering with family and friends on the evening of January 6: The Merienda, a pre-dinner so children may go to bed early, with the Rosca, tamales, warm cocoa or atole. The Rosca, an oval sweetbread decorated with slices of crystallized or glaze fruit, suggests a real crown with ornaments that symbolize its jewels and inside, nowadays and depending on the size, one or two plastic figurines of baby Jesus. Roscas may come in many sizes, but not in a different shape, and could even include other figurines. All present at the festivity must cut a slice of the Rosca and the people who find the figurine or figures shall invite everyone present over to a new celebration on February 2, Día de la Candelaria or Candlemass day, for tamales.

Enero 6: Día de Reyes Magos

En México, las celebraciones de las festividades navideñas continúan a los doce días, Enero 6, con la llegada de los Tres Reyes y se extienden hasta Febrero 2 con el Día de la Candelaria. Con base en la fe católica infundida por los misioneros españoles, la celebración de este día se lleva a cabo en muchos países hispanoparlantes desde el siglo diecinueve, coincidiendo con la festividad católica del día de Epifanía. La historia dice que estos hombres sabios tuvieron una epifanía y viajaron a Israel en busca del Rey de Reyes quien acababa de nacer. Siendo guiados por una estrella que se posó sobre el pesebre donde nació el niño Jesús, los magos presentaron regalos al niño: oro, incienso y mirra. Mucho antes de que llegara Santa Claus a México, los tres hombres sabios, reyes de Persia o magos, traían regalos a los niños, los cuales consistían de miel, frutos secos, ropa o zapatos, y para los traviesos, carbón. En nuestra época, tristemente esta vieja tradición desaparece lentamente en virtud de que Santa Claus toma precedencia; sin embargo, existen muchos lugares en México que aún se aferran y donde los niños esperan ansiosamente la llegada de Melchor, Gaspar y Baltasar, los Tres Reyes Magos. Por la noche del 5 de enero, junto a las figuras de los Reyes Magos en el nacimiento, los niños dejan una carta dirigida a los Reyes con una lista de los juguetes que más desean y se merecen por su buen comportamiento durante el año anterior. La carta se coloca dentro de un zapato y junto al agua, paja y alimentos para los animales que han transportado a los Reyes, pues han viajado desde muy lejos; y para los Reyes, leche y galletas. Los niños felizmente abren sus regalos el día 6 de Enero y, sorprendidos, encuentran que el agua, la leche, la paja y el alimento han desaparecido o están a medio comer.    

Para conmemorar esta fecha, en Francia durante la Edad Media, las familias se reunían para disfrutar un pan en forma redonda, espolvoreado con azúcar y fruta cristalizada; escondida dentro del pan, una haba la cual simbolizaba un sitio seguro donde Jesús podría nacer, lejos del rey Herodes. Esta práctica llegó a México durante los primeros años de la Colonia y ha permanecido como una reunión tradicional con la familia y los amigos por la noche del 6 de Enero: La merienda, una cena ligera para que los niños vayan a la cama temprano, con rosca, tamales, chocolate caliente o atole. La rosca es un pan dulce en forma de ovalo decorado con rodajas de fruta cristalizada o glaseada que sugiere una corona verdadera con adornos que simbolizan sus joyas; y dentro de esta, en la actualidad y dependiendo el tamaño, una o dos figurillas de plástico representando al niño Jesús. Las roscas pueden venir en muchos tamaños mas no formas, e incluso pueden incluir otras figurillas.  Todos los presentes en la festividad deben cortar un pedazo de la rosca, y las personas que encuentren las figurillas deberán invitar a todos a una nueva celebración el 2 de Febrero, el Día de la Candelaria, a comer tamales.
