75 Thousand Cruise Ship Passengers Visit Cozumel in the First Week of 2012

The first week of 2012 is bursting with cruise ship arrivals.  All in all, Cozumel will see 25 ships call into port, carrying an estimated 75,000 passengers.  The highlight of the first week of 2012 is Friday when the 6 very large ships will be in town.  Also arriving by air this week will be 43 flights, adding an additional 9,600 visitors to our island.

La primera semana del año 2012 se desborda con el arribo de buques turísticos. En pocas palabras, Cozumel presenciará el arribo de 25 buques en puerto con y un estimado de 75,000 pasajeros. La primera semana del año 2012 se destacará con la llegada de 6 enormes buques. Además, esta semana se espera la llegada de 43 vuelos, mismos que añaden 9,600 visitantes a nuestra isla.

Three Kings Day Celebrations in Cozumel

Three Kings Day, or “Día de Reyes,”  is celebrated on January 6th, which, is the Epiphany, or the 12th day after Christmas, when the Magi, arrived bearing gifts for baby Jesus.  Traditionally, children receive gifts from the 3 Kings, and will oftentimes leave their shoes out so they can be filled with presents.  It’s also traditional to eat rosca de reyes, a sweetbread in the shape of a wreath with a figurine of the baby Jesus baked inside.  The person who finds this figurine is expected to host a party on February 2nd, also known as Candlemas, where tamales are served.

Here in Cozumel, the municipal authorities have organized an entire week of shows and music to celebrate the end of the holiday season, with the grand finale taking place on January 6th.  All events will take place at the Parque Andres Quinta Roo, locared directly in front of the Palacio Municipal.  For more information on the events, check out this page. 

Celebran en Cozumel el Día de los Reyes Magos

El día 6 de enero es el Día de Reyes, que es la celebración de la Epifanía o doceavo día después de la Navidad, cuando los Magos llegaron con regalos para el niño Jesús. Según la tradición, los niños reciben regalos de los 3 Reyes, y, a menudo, los niños sacan sus zapatos para que los Magos los llenen de regalos.  Otra de las tradiciones es comer la Rosca de Reyes, un pan dulce en forma de corona dentro de la cual se esconde una figurilla del niño Jesús. La persona que encuentre la figurilla deberá hacer una fiesta el día 2 de febrero, también conocido como el Día de la Candelaria, donde se sirven los tamales.

Cozumel's Demita Shines in the Formula Experience Windsurf Championships

Huge congratulations go out to Cozumel’s own, Demita Vega DeLille who came in an overall 7th place in the Formula Experience World Windsurfing Championship., which took place in Cancun from December 26 – 31st.  Athletes from 11 nations competed in the 10th annual competition.  It is interesting to note that the Formula Experience has recently switched over to a “one design” format, which places the emphasis on the competitors and their skills rather than the equipment.  For more information on Demita, and her fantastic year,  check out her profile here. 

La cozumeleña Demita, brilla en el Campeonato Mundial de Windsurf "Formula Experience"

Una gran felicitación para la cozumeleña Demita Vega DeLille quien obtuvo el 7º lugar en el Campeonato Mundial de Windsurf “Formula Experience” que se llevó a cabo en Cancún del 26 al 31 de diciembre.  Atletas de 11 países compitieron en la 10ª competencia anual. Resulta interesante señalar que “Formula Experience” recientemente cambio al formato “one design”, donde se resalta a los competidores y a sus habilidades más que en al equipo. Cozumel To Have Extra Protection Against Hurricanes

Cozumel may very well have extra protection against hurricanes very shortly, in the form of a very special gift from the city of Caravaca de la Cruz in Spain.  Spanish officials are donating relics from the Cross of Caravaca, which is considered to be a protection against hurricanes and strong winds.  The Cross of Caravaca is a very holy relic to those of the catholic faith and dates back to 1248.  The presentation ceremony is scheduled to take place on February 9.

Cozumel contará con protección adicional contra los huracanes

Es muy posible que próximamente Cozumel llegue a contar con protección adicional contra huracanes a través de un regalo muy especial Ciudad de Caravaca de la Cruz en España. Las autoridades españolas están donando reliquias de la Cruz de Caravaca, la cual se considera protectora contra huracanes y fuertes vientos. Para los fieles católicos, la Cruz de Caravaca es una reliquia sagrada que se remonta al año 1248. La ceremonia de presentación esta programada para efectuarse el día 9 de febrero.

Humane Society Pets of the Week

RAMBO  - As I was driving in a hurry to the shelter last week, I saw a dog that seemed to be either tied up or stuck to the tires of a big trailer truck by a rope tied to his neck. I asked one of our guys  to go check on him, and sure enough, he was stuck. He must have escaped from wherever he was kept and dragged that thick rope all over the street, which ended up getting caught in between the 2 tires of the truck. The staff named him Rambo. He is a young adult, handsome, very friendly, soon to be neutered boy.

DONNA - This is a small wire-haired mama dog who was found in the back of the truck by the first person to arrive in the shelter. She had been put there with her three puppies AMY, ETTA and BEBEL. Mama had pale gums and a little bit of dermatitis on neck and head, but otherwise OK and is looking better all the time.  In fact, Donna has potential to be a gorgeous dog. Baby Amy has been adopted and we still have Bebel and Etta. They are so darned cute!

CLETO - He is a tuxedo boy, very elegant. He could look great on any type of living room! Black with white marks. He looks very serious but he can be very playful.

Las Mascotas de la Semana de la Sociedad Humanitaria

RAMBO - Cuando iba manejando de prisa hacia el refugio la semana pasada, ví de pasada a un perro que parecía estar amarrado o  atorado a las llantas de un trailer. Tenía una cuerda gruesa amarrada al cuello. Le pedí a uno de los muchachos del staff que fuera a checar cual era la situación, y sí, estaba atorado. El pobre debe haber escapado y arrastró la soga por todos lados hasta que terminó atorandose entre las llantas del trailer.
El staff le puso RAMBO, lo cual le va bastante bien. Es un adulto joven, guapo, amistoso, y pronto pasará por la debida orquiectomía (o sea que lo vamos a castrar).

DONNA - Esta es una perrita pequeña, de 8 kg, tipo pelo de alambre que fue abandonada en la camioneta junto con sus tres cachorritas: AMY, ETTA y BEBEL. La mamá tenía las encías pálidas y un poco de dermatitis en cabeza y cuello, pero fuera de eso estaba bien y se va poniendo mejor cada día. Realmente esta perrita tiene potencial para ser una guapura. La bebé Amy ya se adoptó pero todavía están Etta y Bebel. ¡Son tan lindas!

CLETO - Es un gato entacuchado, muy elegante, negro con marcas blancas. ¡Combinaría muy bien con cualquier sillón de la casa!Tiene cara de serio pero puede ser muy juguetón.

English-Language Book Drive for Children Organized for Dia del Nino

If you’re planning a trip to Cozumel shortly and find yourself with a little extra room in your suitcase, consider tucking in a used, or cheap book, in English, for a child here in Cozumel.  While many children learn English in school, books for children in English can often be hard to come by, and they’re especially important for younger children to help them solidly master a second language.  Books are being collected at Paprika Restaurant and will be presented to island schoolchildren for “Dia del Nino,” which takes place on April 330th.  If you have a child, or a grandchild, who has grown up and out of their books, this is a great opportunity to pass that gift along!  Paprika Restaurant is located in the South Hotel Zone, across the street from Tikila and adjacent to the Casa del Mar Hotel.  For more information on how to donate, or get involved, please contact info@czm4you.com

Jornada de libros en idioma inglés para el Día del Niño

Si tiene planeado viajar dentro de poco tiempo a Cozumel y si cuenta con espacio adicional en su maleta, considere incluir un libro usado o económico en idioma inglés para algún niño de Cozumel. En tanto muchos niños aprenden el idioma inglés en las escuelas, los libros en inglés para niños con frecuencia son difíciles de conseguir y son particularmente importantes para ayudar a los más pequeños a dominar en forma más firme un segundo idioma. Los libros se están recabando en el restaurante Paprika y serán entregados el próximo 30 de abril, Día del Niño, a niños de edad escolar en la isla. Si alguno de sus hijos o nietos ya ha pasado cierta edad y descartado sus libros, ¡esta es una gran oportunidad para compartir ese regalo con otros! El restaurante Paprika se ubica en la Zona Hotelera Sur, frente a Tikila y junto al Hotel Casa del Mar. Trash the Dress - The popular Trash the Dress sessions offered by M & J Photography have been around for about ten years. Conceived by a Las Vegas photographer, they became popular with brides and high school seniors as a way to do something "different" with a dress that may be worn once, then hung in a closet for years. The idea is to create a fine art portrait suitable for framing and hanging on the wall. Cozumel and the Riviera Maya have lots of natural locations for the "TTD", with cenotes and beaches leading the list.
